USAFA cadet candidate killed in alleged hit-and-run while kayaking in Texas
On Sunday, May 25, Texas Game Wardens responded to a water fatality involving a personal watercraft and a kayaker at Lake Grapevine in Tarrant County, Texas. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW), details indicated that a personal watercraft occupied by two women allegedly struck the victim and killed the 18-year-old.
The passenger of the personal watercraft remained on scene to be interviewed by first responders. TPW said that the operator left the scene with a man, and while leaving the area, the operator and the man then struck another car.
On Monday, May 26, TPW announced it was looking for both the operator and the driver of the vehicle and asked the public to help locate them. On Tuesday, May 27, the suspect allegedly tied to the 18-year-old's death, Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, was arrested.
'We are thankful for the help of fellow law enforcement officers from the Texas Attorney General's Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Dallas Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations,' wrote TPW.
On Tuesday, the Air Force Academy confirmed the victim, Ava Moore, was a cadet candidate who had graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School on May 19, 2025, and had accepted an appointment to join the Academy as a member of the Class of 2029.
'We lost an exemplary teammate this weekend – Cadet Candidate Ava Moore, whose passion for leadership and service left an impact on everyone she met,' said Academy Superintendent Lt Gen Tony Bauernfeind. 'Ava's constant happiness and attitude helped her squadron get through the challenges of the Prep School, and her drive to excel was on display as she sought out leadership positions to improve herself and her team. Our team is focused on providing support to Ava's family, her Prep School Squadron, the Prep School Women's Basketball team, and the entire Academy family.'
'Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ava's family, friends, and loved ones,' USAFA wrote via Facebook. 'Ava, may you find blue skies and tailwinds as you rest forever in peace.'

How Albion's academy put Callum back on track
Callum Mackley has revealed how Albion's academy restored his enjoyment of football. And the emerging defender might not be the only family member worth keeping an eye on. Mackley played the second half of the friendly win over Las Palmas in Marbella. He took the left-back role that night as Pervis Estupinan prepared for his move to Milan. But the 18-year-old can play anywhere across the back line, as he has shown for the under-21s. He also helped the 21s to a positive trip to Spain which included a 1-1 draw against Spanish second-tier side Cadiz. Mackley comes from Portsmouth and thanks his parents for their support, which included a fair few miles up and down the A27. He said: 'I have been at Brighton since I was 12 and I was at Southampton since the age of seven so that's a lot of driving and miles for my dad to cover. 'As well as my siblings who play football as well so him putting in that time and effort for me is really helpful.' Mackley made a big move along the coast which, by coincidence, mirrored that of fellow defender Ben White during his academy years. He said: 'When I was at Southampton with my brother, it came to the end of under-12s and I just wasn't enjoying it that much. 'Just the environment I was in. 'It was quite a hard decision for me and my family to decide to leave. 'Then when Brighton came in and asked about me, I went and had a look around and felt Brighton was the place for me. 'From all the staff, the education, the building. 'Just the feeling of the club was really attractive to me and since I have been here it has been the best. 'I am forever grateful for all the hard work the staff put in. 'There are too many people to mention – too many top coaches, all the way through the academy. 'I am just very grateful for their hard work and efforts, for giving me opportunities and trusting me and it has paid off.' Mackley highlighted the fact he was one of four players taken across from the 21s to the seniors in Spain. But the other three – Andrew Moran, Malick Yalcouye and new goalkeeper Nils Ramming – are experienced by comparison. Mackley is among the youngsters who has taken part in senior training sessions under Fabian Hurzeler's tenure. That meant he was comfortable stepping into a first-team environment which includes some big names and, in James Milner, a player who made his Prem debut four years before Mackley was born. He added: 'The manager Fabian likes to bring young lads in and train with the first team. 'I feel like that is what Brighton as a club are good at. 'Sometimes I am involved in a session and I feel like it is a good environment for me to gain experience and learn and be around the lads so, when opportunities like that come along, it is not a surprise. 'It is more a comfortable transition. 'I see first team players around the building every day. 'We all know each other and it is a nice atmosphere.' That atmosphere could be heard as non-playing squad members watched the Las Palmas game. Wonderkid future in doubt after big Arne Slot decision
Liverpool have jetted off to Asia for their pre-season tour and some brutal squad decisions have been made by Arne Slot, giving us clues about which academy products might eventually join the . Those picked on their potential will have the opportunity to impress Slot and if there are any holes in the team that need to be filled, the Reds' won't hesitate to offer plenty of chances to the youth. So far we've seen 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha brought in to the two games against Preston and Stoke and he has taken to the senior level like a duck to water, becoming a favourite among the fans. He will be joined by other such stars hoping to make a similar impact when they receive minutes on the pitch, but there are sadly some hopefuls that won't be in the club's plans. Wonderkid set for Liverpool exit The 18-year-old right-winger Kieran Morrison is not included in the squad headed to Asia which might well signify that this summer is a little too early in his development. The Northern Irishman played in the Preston win last week, but he joins Tommy Pilling and Amara Nallo with the rest of the academy before another long campaign begins in a few weeks. However, there ARE places in the travelling party for other youngsters like Ben Doak, Trey Nyoni and Luca Stephenson. Doak will be given a chance to sign in preseason although his future remains up in the air. Nyoni, meanwhile, has just put pen to paper on a new professional deal. Stephenson has fought his way into preseason contention after an impressive season on loan at Dundee United in Scotland. There are a lot of outgoing transfer moves still to be sanctioned. You would expect Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa, Jayden Danns, Stefan Bajcetic, Kostas Tsimikas, Tyler Morton, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz to be the subject of intense transfer speculation over the course of the next six weeks.
