Is There Mail on July 4th? Post Office, FedEx, UPS Hours
Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content.
Many businesses close on the July 4th federal holiday, and logically, the federal government also shuts down in honor of America's Independence Day.
For Americans, that means mail delivery will likely be disrupted as the United States Post Offices pauses normal operations on all federal holidays.
Why It Matters
The Fourth of July is to also disrupt normal services as it relates to mail delivery and banking services.
Both banks and the U.S. Post Office close for the holiday, so you might have to wait a bit longer for your package or mail to arrive.
A United States Postal Service (USPS) truck is parked while out for mail delivery on May 31, 2025 in Washington, DC.
A United States Postal Service (USPS) truck is parked while out for mail delivery on May 31, 2025 in Washington, DC.What to Know
Is Mail Delivered on July 4th?
Post offices will shut down for the day on July 4th, and no regular mail or business mail deliveries will be made on Friday.
However, priority mail express is offered 365 days a year, which includes federal holidays like July 4th.
You may also still use postage kiosks and drop-off mailboxes, but employees will not be around to help, so keep in mind, those packages will only be handled the next day.
UPS, FedEx Deliveries
Taking a nod from the USPS, UPS will shut down its pickup and delivery services on July 4th, and UPS stores will likely be closed as well. This excludes UPS Express Critical service, which is offered every day of the year.
Likewise, FedEx will suspend most of its pickup and delivery services, with office hours operating on a modified schedule.
FedEx Custom Critical will still be available however.
Nearly all banking institutions, including branches of Chase, Capital One, Truist, Citibank and more will also close for the day.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also be impacted by the federal holiday. Many schools and businesses will also close for the day, to allow students and workers to enjoy the holiday with their families and friends.
When Will the Postal Service Resume?
The postal services will be back up and running on Saturday, July 5.
What People Are Saying
The Library of Congress said: "Philadelphians marked the first anniversary of American independence with a spontaneous celebration, which is described in a letter by John Adams to his daughter, Abigail. However, observing Independence Day only became commonplace after the War of 1812."
What Happens Next
The USPS will return to normal operations on Saturday, so your mail should not be delayed for too long.
The next federal holiday is Labor Day, which falls on September 1.

Most Fourth of July sales started a few days before the actual holiday and stick around for a few days after the main event, like now. Plus, since Amazon's Prime Day sale kicks off soon on July 8, the two sales may blend, giving you more chances to save big. Where are the best July 4th sales? Fourth of July sales offer some of the best prices on tech, appliances, mattresses and fashion, making it a great time to snag stellar prices on must-have items, and there are a ton of retailers participating in the holiday savings. Unsurprisingly, Amazon is usually one of the best places to buy from, because it sells products from almost all major brands across these popular categories, making it a tremendous one-stop shop for all your Fourth of July purchases. Apart from Amazon, we recommend checking out appliance and tech sales at Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe's, as well as holiday sales on a large variety of categories at Target, Nordstrom and Walmart, among others. Most of these will extend throughout the holiday weekend and possibly beyond. Should I shop July 4th sales or wait for Prime Day deals? Plus, it's likely the two sales will blur into one big discount extravaganza, given their proximity. Fourth of July sales offer more variety in retailers, although much of your shopping may take place on Amazon anyway. We also see plenty of brands hosting Fourth of July sales directly that are still live, so if you have a preference or brand loyalty, like Samsung or GE, this time of year is an excellent time to check out both places to determine which offers will work best for you. How does CNET select the best July 4th appliance deals? Our team of expert shoppers and deal hunters has spent years helping buyers understand which major sales and deals are legitimately good and which are more routine. That includes Black Friday, Prime Day, Memorial Day and countless other shopping events. We've become very good at weeding out scams and superficial deals on appliances of every kind, so you see only the best offers. At CNET, we look for real discounts, quality reviews and remaining sale time when choosing a deal to show you. Real discounts mean exactly that. We look at the price history for that product to make sure no manufacturers are inflating prices to make the discount seem more substantial than it is. Quality reviews are important for any product, but especially for deeply discounted items. An appliance is a big investment, and if you don't get enough mileage out of it, the discount isn't really worthwhile. Remaining sale time is a huge part of our vetting process. If a deal seems like it'll be around for only a short while or will be available only for remaining stock, we'll let you know upfront so you don't come back to the deal later only to be disappointed.

I've been doing this long enough to know the standard sales from each brand, and I can tell you that these lingering sales match those offered on Presidents Day and Memorial Day. That also means that if you can't afford a mattress right now, you can just catch the next holiday. Most brands run sales within a set range for every season. For example, Saatva's best sale is generally $600 off mattresses, while Nectar often runs up to 50% off sales for its beds. Should you shop July 4th mattress deals or wait for Amazon Prime Day? Amazon Prime Day starts on July 8, and we expect plenty of mattress deals across Amazon. There's a very good chance that many online bed brands will extend their Fourth of July sales to compete with Amazon's event. If you're looking for beds specially sold on Amazon, like Rolanstar, Siena or the Ashley Home Signature, then waiting for Prime Day is a good idea. However, if you want a bed from a brand like Saatva, Casper or Purple, I wouldn't wait. Most lingering sales are only going to be around for a short period of time, and I doubt they will be significantly better than right now. Most brands have a set sale range they offer across holidays.
