The Women's Super League is to expand to 14 teams in the 2026/27 season (JUSTIN TALLIS)
The English Women's Super League (WSL) is set expand to 14 teams from 12 for the start of the 2026/27 season after the proposal was voted through by clubs on Monday.
The changes still require the approval of the English Football Association but are expected to pass with a promotion/relegation play-off as part of the shake up to the women's game.

Currently just one club is relegated and one promoted each season.
Next season the top two from the second tier WSL2 will be automatically promoted.
Additionally, third-place in the WSL2 will face the team that finishes bottom in the top tier in a play-off.
From the 2026/27 campaign, the one automatic relegation and promotion place will return with a play-off between second bottom in the WSL and second top in the second tier.
"Subject to the approval from the FA board, expanding the WSL to 14 teams will stimulate movement between leagues and through the pyramid which increases opportunities," said Nikki Doucet, chief executive of Women's Professional Leagues Limited.

"The introduction of a promotion/relegation play-off creates distinction for the women's game and introduces a high-profile, high-stakes match."
Expansion is part of a 10-year plan to raise standards across the top two tiers of English women's football, focused on improved facilities, staffing and academies.
According to financial experts Deloitte, collective revenues in the WSL rose 34 percent to £65 million ($88 million) in 2023/24 and are projected to reach £100 million in the upcoming season.
However, Deloitte also found that average attendances across the league dipped by 10 percent last season to 6,642 as the surge in interest generated by England's Euro 2022 success faded.

Why is David Beckham wearing an arm sling? What he said about recent surgery

ATLANTA — David Beckham says his right wrist is recovering well after having surgery to repair an old injury he sustained during his playing career. Beckham wore a sling to elevate his heavily bandaged right forearm, while in attendance Sunday, June 29, for the FIFA Club World Cup match between Inter Miami, a team he co-owns, and Paris Saint-Germain, the last club he played for in 2013. "It's an old injury that needed surgery, but it's all good," Beckham said in an interview with DAZN before the match. "It's all good." "It's very special"Hear more from @InterMiamiCF owner Sir David Beckham ahead of this afternoon's match:Watch the @FIFACWC | June 14 - July 13 | Every Game | Free | | #FIFACWC #TakeItToTheWorld #PSGMIA News of Beckham's surgery was first shared in social media posts by his wife, Victoria, in the last week. As for the Inter Miami-PSG match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Beckham said the contest raised some emotions. "To be honest, it's quite an emotional match for me. Obviously, the team that we own is playing probably the best team in the world right now. And who would've thought?' Beckham said. "For me to finish my career in Paris, the way I did with this club, was very special. I only spent six months there, but it felt like 16 years." Beckham started his career with Manchester United, winning six Premier League titles with the English club. He also played for Real Madrid, the L.A. Galaxy in Major League Soccer, and AC Milan before his final year with Paris Saint-Germain. He played 115 matches for England, including 59 games as captain. He is the only English player to score in three different World Cups. Beckham, 50, is arguably the most famous sportsman in England's history. He will be awarded a knighthood by King Charles III.

Exclusive: Niural lands $31M to streamline global payroll

Niural, a global payroll and finance operations startup, has raised $31 million in Series A funding, CEO Nami Baral tells Axios exclusively. Why it matters: Over half of all global companies experience payroll-processing errors at least once per quarter, per Deloitte. How it works: Niural operates a full-stack global professional employer organization (PEO) that automates payroll, benefits, vendor payments, and compliance in over 150 countries. The platform is powered by Emma, an AI agent that provides guidance and can also execute payroll and HR actions on behalf of users. Emma, Baral says, "doesn't just surface help‑desk articles; it actually completes the payroll and HR actions for you." With that automation, she says Niural can cut HR costs by up to 50% while saving clients over 60 hours of manual work each month. Between the lines: In addition to payroll, Niural offers services like accounts receivable, accounts payable and cash flow reporting, which reduces the need for managing multiple vendors. Customers initially come to Niural to manage payroll, but Baral says most adopt three to six other tools once they see the platform. "We saw a gap in how companies managed money outflows — payroll, benefits, vendor payments. That's where we start, but we aim to be the system of intelligence for the entire CFO suite," Baral says. By the numbers: Niural claims it has grown ARR 7x in the past year and reduced payroll errors for its customers by 90%. The big picture: The global payroll market is becoming crowded with players like Rippling, Deel, Remote and others expanding internationally. But Baral says most PEOs rely on third-party software to manage large parts of their operations. Niural, by contrast, spent multiple years building its payroll stack from scratch. "Ninety percent of U.S. PEOs still run on the same third-party system — Prism HR. Its infrastructure hasn't changed in decades. We knew we had to own the stack to innovate," she says. Zoom in: Marathon Management Partners led the round, which included participation from M13, Inspired Capital, Newform Capital, and others. Marathon's Gokul Rajaram, a board member at Coinbase, The Trade Desk, and Pinterest, is joining Niural's board as part of the deal. Niural previously raised $10 million in seed funding.

When the teams returned, Chelsea was called for a handball in stoppage time when the ball hit Malo Gusto's hand. 'For 85 minutes we were in control. After the break, the match changed. It's not the same game,' Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca. 'You suspend a game (for two hours), to me that's not football. I struggle to understand it. … We have been here two weeks and they have suspended six or seven games, so something is not working here.' Only a few thousand fans returned for the conclusion. Chelsea entered with a 3-0 record against Benfica and controlled the tempo in the first half with a 5-1 edge in shots on goal. More than half of the lower bowl of 75,000-seat Bank of America Stadium was empty and all but a few hundred seats in the upper deck were remained unclaimed as the event continues to struggle with ticket sales in the United States even as it moved into the knockout round.
