Time of India2 days ago
HYDERABAD: In a major crackdown on long-pending criminal cases, Rachakonda police declared the commissionerate 'NBW-free' on Saturday after executing 2,847 non-bailable warrants (NBWs) over the past 40 days.
During the special drive, police also found that 52 of the accused were, in fact, deceased.
Announcing this at a press conference, Rachakonda commissioner of police G Sudheer Babu said that of the 2,847 NBWs pending as of April 2025, police successfully executed 2,024 warrants.
For the remaining 823 accused who could not be traced, the police filed requests in court to issue notices to their sureties and sought proclamation orders under sections 82 and 83 of CrPC and sections 84 and 85 of the new BNSS for property attachment.
" This special drive aimed to ensure accountability and restore the rule of law," the commissioner said.

Of the total NBWs, 1,408 were issued before 2023. In one notable case, the police traced an absconding accused - charged under the
Pocso Act
in 2016 - who was found to be serving a life sentence in a Nellore jail in Andhra Pradesh.
"Similarly, 14 other accused were discovered in jails across different locations, and those warrants were regularised by producing them in the respective courts," the commissioner added.

The drive also led to progress in pending trials. In four Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances related cases, where accused had been missing, trials have now resumed after the individuals were finally produced in court. The initiative, police said, was not just about clearing backlog but reinforcing integrity of justice system.

Bihar horror: 5 of family killed in Purnea over witchcraft, black magic suspicions; three arrested

NEW DELHI: Five family members were allegedly killed, and the accused burnt their bodies in a bush on suspicion of practising witchcraft, police said on Monday. The incident took place in Bihar's Purnea district. Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident. 'Preliminary investigation suggests that five members of a family in Tetma village were first murdered on suspicion of practising witchcraft. It appears that the accused then burnt their bodies in a bush. The incident took place on Sunday night,' said DIG (Purnea) Pramod Kumar Mandal. According to the police, the killings took place on Sunday night in Tetma village under the jurisdiction of Sadar sub-division. Local police launched an investigation after receiving a call early Monday morning from 16-year-old Sonu Kumar, a member of the affected family. Police said the attack may have been triggered by the recent death of a child in the village. 'It is being said that the child of one Ramdev Oraon died three days back. It is believed that they indulged in black magic and they were killed in this connection,' SDPO Pankaj Kumar Sharma said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Tejashwi Yadav reacts to the incident In a post on X, the RJD leader said: "In Purnia, five members of the same family were burnt alive." Bengal, Odisha failed to act against illegal NRI quota admissions in pvt medical colleges: ED

The Enforcement Directorate Monday said authorities in West Bengal and Odisha did not take any action against admission of ineligible candidates in certain private medical colleges under the NRI quota despite the MEA providing "categorical" information of "forgery". The federal probe agency said it has seized "incriminating" evidence during searches in this case in the past. A fixed deposit worth Rs 6.42 crore of a private college in West Bengal has been provisionally attached, the ED said. It had earlier attached assets worth Rs 12.33 crore of some colleges and individuals involved in these alleged irregularities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? "These private medical colleges were paying agents to prepare fake documents. The agents approached and obtained credentials of unrelated NRIs by paying money and used these to prepare fake documents and projected these NRIs as sponsors for students." Live Events "In some cases, the agents and medical colleges used the same set of NRI sponsor documents for two to three different and unrelated candidates," the agency said. It claimed that this has been done to show compliance with guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in this matter. The ED said "huge commissions" were being paid for this illegal act. "Despite categorical information of forgery in cases of certain NRI sponsors provided by the Ministry of External Affairs, no action has been taken by concerned state authorities," the probe agency said. Various Indian consulates/embassies in foreign countries have informed that NRI certificates of sponsor in many cases, which were used to secure admissions in these private medical colleges under the NRI quota, are "not genuine", it added.
