Federal climate website goes dark as Trump administration promises policy reset

The federal website created to host the U.S. national climate assessments, congressionally-mandated and peer-reviewed reports that cover the effects of climate change in the U.S. has been inaccessible so far this week. A Fox News Digital review found that the websites for the U.S. Global Change Research Program and the pages for the national assessments were down on Tuesday without any links or referrals to other websites. The White House said the climate-related reports will be located within the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) going forward. However, searches for the assessments did not bring anything up on the NASA website, according to The Associated Press. The U.S. national climate assessments, of which five have been created to date, are published every four years. Some scientists argue the reports save money and lives, AP reported. "It's critical for decision-makers across the country to know what the science in the National Climate Assessment is," University of Arizona climate scientist Kathy Jacobs said in a statement. "That is the most reliable and well-reviewed source of information about climate that exists for the United States." In March, President Donald Trump's energy chief vowed a reversal of "politically polarizing" Biden-era climate policies as the new administration approaches climate change as "a global physical phenomenon." "I am a climate realist," Energy Secretary Chris Wright said at S&P Global's CERAWeek conference in Houston in March. "The Trump administration will treat climate change for what it is, a global physical phenomenon that is a side effect of building the modern world." In February, the Trump administration similarly revamped agency websites to be rid of climate change-filled content, amid a widespread rebranding of federal departments from content deemed as not aligning with Trump's agenda. The White House and NASA did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

Columbia University plans to steal a page from the conservative playbook

Legal experts at Columbia University and New York activists have teamed up to launch a factory to churn out draft laws for state legislatures to tackle climate change, pulling from conservatives' playbook. Columbia's Sabin Center for Climate Change Law and nonprofit campaign group Environmental Advocates New York on Wednesday launched the 'Model Climate Laws Initiative,' with organizers saying some of their first targets will probably be greener state building codes and rules boosting electric vehicles.

Denmark to conscript women for military service

Denmark on Tuesday expanded its military service to include women, as the Nordic country seeks to recruit more soldiers and strengthen its defenses amid heightened security concerns across Europe. Under a law passed by Denmark's parliament in June 2023, Denmark will require women turning 18 after July 1, 2025 to register for assessment days for potential military conscription, aligning with measures already in place for men. Until now, women, who last year made up around 24% of all recruits, had been allowed to join the military on a voluntary basis. 'In the world situation we're in right now, it's necessary to have more conscripts, and I think that women should contribute to that equally, as men do,' Katrine, a recruit in the Danish Royal Life Guard, told Reuters without giving her last name. In Denmark, volunteers are signed up first for conscription, while the remaining numbers are drawn up in a lottery system. The armed forces are in the process of making adjustments in barracks and equipment better suited for women. 'There are different things that they need to improve, especially in terms of equipment. Right now, it's made for men, so perhaps the rucksacks are a bit too large and the uniforms are large as well,' said Katrine. Denmark, which together with NATO allies last week agreed to boost defense spending, plans to gradually increase the duration of the conscription period from four months to 11 months in 2026 and raise the number of recruits doing military service from around 5,000 now to 7,500 in 2033.
