Kuwait targets Hezbollah finances with sanctions

Shafaq News28-07-2025
Shafaq News – Kuwait
On Monday, Kuwait's Foreign Ministry added Lebanon's Hezbollah group, its affiliated charity Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association, and three individuals to its sanctions and asset-freeze list.
The listing includes Lebanese national A.M.M. (born May 18, 1966), Tunisian national A.F.M.Q. (born October 5, 1991), and Somali national A.M., born between 1950 and 1953.
Kuwait's sanctions committee instructed all financial institutions and companies to enforce the designation, citing Articles 21, 22, and 23 of the executive regulations implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
Although Al-Qard Al-Hassan presents itself as a social and financial support organization, it is widely considered one of Hezbollah's most significant financial arms. Operating outside Lebanon's formal monetary and credit oversight framework, it has drawn ongoing scrutiny from international sanctions bodies.
The sanctions follow reports stating that Lebanese authorities were preparing to shut down all branches of Al-Qard Al-Hassan as part of a broader effort to close currency exchange offices and financial entities allegedly linked to Hezbollah.
Lebanese officials later downplayed those reports, denying any closures.

Israel kills 40 in Gaza as Netanyahu pushes for full occupation

Shafaq News – Gaza Israeli airstrikes overnight into Tuesday killed at least 40 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, including 10 civilians who were shot while waiting for food at a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution center, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. The total death toll has now surpassed 60,000, with more than 148,000 injured since the outbreak of the war. The Health Ministry reported that five people, including three children, died of starvation yesterday, raising the total number of famine-related deaths to 180, with 93 of them children. #غزه_تموت_جوعاً — المركز الفلسطيني للإعلام (@PalinfoAr) August 5, 2025 Amid this crisis, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly resolved to pursue a 'full occupation of the Gaza Strip,' according to Israeli media. The Security Cabinet is expected to meet later today to finalize the plan. The Prime Minister's office confirmed that Benjamin Netanyahu has come to a decision for the full occupation of the Gaza Strip, including operations in areas where hostages are held. @AmichaiStein1 — The Jerusalem Post (@Jerusalem_Post) August 4, 2025 Israeli Army Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, is reportedly opposing the move, warning that it could endanger hostages and result in substantial Israeli and Palestinian casualties. The debate comes just days after US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff visited Israel to push for a renewed ceasefire framework. Global support for a two-state solution remains widespread. The United Nations and the Arab League continue to back the creation of an independent Palestinian state, while more than 140 countries — including Russia, China, India, and most African, Asian, and Latin American nations — have already extended recognition. Several Western allies, including France, the UK, and Canada, are preparing to follow suit. In a recent move, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong reaffirmed her government's support for the recognition of a Palestinian state, declaring that such recognition is a matter of 'when, not if.' She warned that without urgent international action, 'there will be no Palestine left to recognize,' and called for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian aid. Gold hovers near 1-week high as weak US jobs data lifts rate cut bets

Shafaq News Gold prices steadied on Tuesday, hovering near a more than one-week high hit in the last session, as a softer U.S. jobs bolstered hopes of a Federal Reserve rate cut in September, weighing on the dollar and Treasury yields. Spot gold held steady at $3,371.40 per ounce as of 0432 GMT. Bullion hit its highest since July 24 on Monday. U.S. gold futures was unchanged at $3,425.30. The dollar index traded near a one-week low, making gold more affordable to holders of other currencies. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note also hit a one-month low. "Short-term momentum has improved for the bullish side of the story... fundamental narrative supporting gold prices is that the Fed is still in the mode to actually cut rates in September," OANDA senior market analyst Kelvin Wong said. U.S. employment growth was softer than expected in July, while non-farm payroll figures for May and June were revised down by a massive 258,000 jobs, suggesting a deterioration in labor market conditions. Traders now see a 92% chance of a September rate cut, per the CME FedWatch tool. Gold, traditionally considered a safe-haven asset during political and economic uncertainties, tends to thrive in a low-interest-rate environment. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has again threatened to raise tariffs on Indian goods over its Russian oil purchases. New Delhi called his remarks "unjustified" and vowed to protect its economic interests, deepening the trade rift. Still, gold faces some technical resistance. "I still do not see traders pushing up aggressively above the $3,450 level. Unless we have a very clear catalyst for gold price to actually pick up this level" Wong said. Elsewhere, spot silver fell 0.1% to $37.37 per ounce, platinum lost 0.4% to $1,324.05 and palladium shed 0.4% to $1,201.47.
