The 38-year-old man allegedly stole the items, boarded his flight and left the country. However, upon his return to Singapore, he was arrested.
A 38-year-old Indian man allegedly stole goods worth lakhs of rupees from multiple shops at Singapore's Jewel Changi Airport. Remarkably, after committing the theft, he boarded his flight and left the country undetected, with no immediate reports of the missing items. However, upon his return to Singapore, local authorities apprehended him and took him into custody.
As reported by The Straits Times, the man targeted around 14 stores at the airport and stole goods, including perfumes, cosmetics and bags, worth approximately 5,136 Singapore Dollars (SGD), which is equivalent to around Rs 3.5 lakh. The 38-year-old was arrested by the authorities upon his return on June 1, as stated by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) in a press release shared on Wednesday, July 23.
How Was The Theft Discovered By The Authorities?
The alleged theft came to light on May 29 after a supervisor at one of the shops in Jewel Changi Airport noticed that a bag was missing while checking the stock. The police were immediately made aware of the situation on that very day at around 4:28 PM.
Upon reviewing the CCTV camera footage at the airport, the authorities spotted the 38-year-old Indian national. They saw that he took the bag and left the shop without paying. Further investigations also revealed that he not only stole the bag but also took items from 13 other shops within the airport complex.
The police were successful in identifying the man, but by then, he had already left Singapore.
How Was The Indian Man Arrested?
The man returned to the country on June 1, and the Singapore Police swiftly took action against him. He was arrested while in transit at Jewel Changi Airport, and his luggage was searched. The stolen goods were reportedly recovered from him.
He is set to be formally charged in court on Friday, July 25, with theft and fraudulent possession of property. As quoted by the aforementioned outlet, a police officer said, 'Offenders should not think that they can evade capture by quickly boarding a flight. The police will continue to work closely with stakeholders to prevent and deter shop theft cases."
If the Indian man is convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison, a fine or both.
