UAE becomes first country to approve oral drug for immune thrombocytopenia

The approval of Rilzabrutinib in the UAE represents a major step forward, offering patients with ITP early access to a pioneering therapeutic solution that contributes to a faster treatment journey and a tangible improvement in quality of life.
The decision aligns with the UAE's strategic commitment to ensuring the availability of high-efficacy, globally benchmarked treatment s in line with the highest international standards and protocols.
Developed by global pharmaceutical and healthcare company Sanofi, Rilzabrutinib represents a breakthrough in restoring immune system balance by targeting the underlying cause of ITP.
By increasing platelet counts, the treatment addresses both the symptoms and root causes of the condition. Clinical studies have demonstrated promising outcomes, with patients reporting substantial improvement in health indicators.
Dr Fatima Al Kaabi, Director-General of the Emirates Drug Establishment, stated, 'The UAE is committed to providing access to the world's latest therapeutic innovations and further promoting its position as a regional hub for pharmaceutical excellence. With Rilzabrutinib getting approved, we take another step further in achieving our strategy aimed at enhancing national pharmaceutical security, implementing advanced treatment protocols, and streamlining regulatory frameworks in collaboration with international partners.'
Dr Al Kaabi emphasised that the milestone demonstrates the effectiveness of the UAE's proactive healthcare policies and flexible regulatory systems in fostering innovation and facilitating patient access to advanced medications.
'The Emirates Drug Establishment will spare no effort to accelerate regulatory procedures, and strengthen global partnerships,' she said. 'This further solidifies the UAE's role as a regional centre for pharmaceutical innovation.'
She added, 'Granting approval for Rilzabrutinib reaffirms the Establishment's commitment to fast-tracking access to transformative therapies that create significant impact, particularly in the treatment of rare and chronic diseases. Dubai doctor on tea break saves man from fatal heart attack after collapsing near Metro
Sameer (name changed upon request) had just stepped out from work and had barely taken a few steps toward the metro station when his vision blurred, his legs buckled, and he collapsed on the pavement. Unconscious and barely breathing, he was completely unaware that he was moments away from death due to a cardiac arrest. Fate, however, intervened in the form of Dr Niraj Gupta — a specialist in interventional cardiology at NMC Royal Hospital in Dubai Investment Park (DIP) who happened to be across the street taking a quick karak break. He hadn't eaten all day and was grabbing a quick snack when he noticed a crowd gathering. 'I saw people standing around someone on the ground. When I reached him, I realised he was sweating heavily and breathing just four times a minute,' Dr Niraj recalled. 'It was a cardiac arrest and we had to act quickly.' The hospital was nearby. Without wasting a moment, the doctor alerted the Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services (DCAS) and began CPR. Two shocks were delivered even before reaching the hospital, and a third one was administered inside the emergency department. A full Code Blue was activated at the hospital and the patient was given priority. Emergency, ICU, and cardiology teams sprang into action. Sameer was diagnosed with a critical cardiac condition — acute inferior wall ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) and ventricular fibrillation (VF). After being rushed to a laboratory, an angiography revealed a 100 percent blockage in the right coronary artery and a 90 percent blockage in the left. Four drug-eluting stents were placed to restore blood flow. Thanks to the swift medical intervention, he was able to walk again within just two days. 'I didn't even know I had diabetes,' Sameer said after recovering. 'I thought I was healthy. If the doctor hadn't been there that moment, I wouldn't be alive today. I am just so thankful.' Dr Niraj, who hadn't eaten all day and performed the entire procedure without pause, said poor lifestyle habits are one of the biggest contributors to heart attacks in young adults. 'People in their 30s shouldn't be experiencing this. But stress, poor diet, smoking, processed food, and high cholesterol are major risk factors,' he noted. He urged residents to take regular checkups seriously and recommended basic heart screenings, including: Sameer said the experience has changed his life. 'I've cut down on junk food," he said. I started walking every day, and I'm making health my top priority. I got a second chance, I won't take it for granted.'

UAE group supplies urgently requested diapers, baby formula to low-income families
A new campaign titled '5K for Hope Challenge' has been launched by non-profit initiative Hope-Amel UAE to collect and distribute 5,000 packs each of diapers, baby formula, and sanitary pads — three of the most urgently requested items by low-income families in the UAE. The campaign, which began on July 5, aims to provide immediate relief to women and children across the UAE. It will continue throughout July and possibly into the summer. So far, around 100 packages of the three essential items have been collected, with distribution ongoing based on incoming requests. The launch marks the 5th anniversary of Hope-Amel UAE, which began in July 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially started as a small effort on a Facebook page to help one family in Dubai, the initiative has since grown into a community of nearly 15,000 members and has supported over 20,000 families nationwide. The start Founder Abbie Kadom said, "Hope-Amel began when I received a message about a family struggling to afford baby essentials. Within minutes of sharing the message with others, everything the family needed was delivered. This moment made me reflect: if we could help one family so quickly, how many more families were silently struggling?" 'We didn't set out to build an organization. It was just one act, one message. And it kept growing,' she added. The current campaign aims to collect three specific items: diapers, formula, and sanitary pads. These were identified as the most commonly requested essentials by families reaching out to the initiative. Kadom explained that the items are expensive and cannot be stretched or substituted, unlike other household needs. 'If we reach 5,000 packs of diapers, that means 2,500 families will receive a full month's supply. And 5,000 cans of formula would mean 1,250 babies will have milk for an entire month,' she explained. The process Each support request is submitted through a Help Request Form, which collects basic information about the family's situation. 'When someone reaches out, they're asked to fill out a Help Request Form, which gives us the key details to assess the situation,' Kadom said. 'Every request is reviewed and verified before any support is offered,' she added. Once verified, the initiative responds by either delivering donated goods directly or issuing e-vouchers in cases of urgency or logistical limitations. All distributions are handled privately to ensure the dignity of the families receiving support. Despite initial challenges, including a small donor base and limited supplies, the initiative gained trust through consistency and transparency, as it does not handle any financial donations and relies entirely on in-kind contributions and volunteer efforts. Hope-Amel UAE also collaborates with local schools, nurseries, and businesses through campaigns such as the Diaper and Formula Drive, the Ramadan Box Initiative, and the Christmas Toy Drive. It has also contributed to national efforts, including the Gaza Relief Campaign in coordination with the Emirates Red Crescent. Kadom emphasized that support is available to families of all nationalities, religions, and backgrounds, provided they can verify their situation and there are resources available. 'Everyone who can provide proof of their situation and demonstrates a genuine need for these items is eligible for help, provided we have the resources to support them,' she said. She encouraged members of the public to participate by selecting items from curated online wishlists shared via the initiative's Instagram page and website. Items are delivered directly to the team and distributed based on demand.

In a large hospital, for instance, cyber teams will typically manage and safeguard a multitude of devices, many of which contain highly sensitive data or perform life-saving actions. Historically, these roles have worked independently, but today's fast-evolving technology environment requires them to collaborate more closely and integrate their efforts. Resilient and robust networks empower healthcare cyber teams to overcome security hurdles and headaches and pivot their focus beyond core responsibilities to organizational innovation, from improving operational efficiencies to enhancing patient care. Defending Against a Rising Tide of Threats Cyber attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with AI-powered ransomware, data breaches and even attacks on critical infrastructure on the rise. Cyber security professionals face the daunting task of staying ahead of these threats, despite being understaffed and facing oceans of data that need protection. Traditional security models – such as perimeter firewalls – alone are no longer effective. Modern security demands layered protections as multi-factor authentication (MFA), intrusion detection systems, and proactive threat intelligence. Integrating solutions such as Zero Trust, for example, which verifies every user and device within the network, and AI-native technologies that spot and neutralise threats before damage occurs, is consequently becoming the norm. Yet, even with the smartest tools, human expertise remains irreplaceable. There's no denying that AI is fundamentally changing the cybersecurity landscape, both for threat actors and defenders. Still, human expertise is irreplaceable. While AI can process data and flag anomalies, trained professionals make the decisions that ultimately protect critical infrastructure. People Power: The Heart of Effective Cyber Response There are two critical areas in which the 'human touch' remains indispensable in cybersecurity operations: threat interpretation and response. For threat interpretation, consider an alert triggered by an anomaly within a network. AI might identify the unusual activity but won't have the intuition and contextual understanding needed to discern a legitimate cyber threat from a simple irregularity. This is where the expertise of secure networking and cyber security professionals comes in, bringing a level of critical thinking and analysis that AI algorithms, however well-trained and sophisticated, cannot yet replicate. Furthermore, the collaborative aspect of cyber incident response underscores the importance of the human touch. When a potential security breach is detected, it requires effective communication and shared understanding between the network and security teams. These teams' ability to correlate and interpret information from diverse sources, consider the broader context and make judgement calls based on experience is what ultimately determines the effectiveness of the defender's response. Bridging traditional divides and applying collaborative critical thinking to complex situations is the key ingredient to ensure our critical industries remain up and running, smoothly and safely. A Call for Recognition and Investment In an increasingly interconnected world, secure networks and cybersecurity professionals are the backbone of digital infrastructure. They are the guardians of our data and online experiences – and their expertise, dedication, and unwavering commitment keep our connected world running smoothly.
