Jets' Joe Tippmann making most of competition on offensive line

New York Jets center Joe Tippmann was among the bright spots in a dark 2024 season. The then-sophomore blocker made a successful full-time transition from guard. Since moving to center, Tippmann's 70.6 overall Pro Football Focus grade ranks 14th among centers who have played at least 500 snaps. Tippmann's improved play is why it was surprising when the Jets signed veteran center Josh Myers to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million earlier this offseason. The experienced Myers started 56 total contests for the Green Bay Packers over the previous four campaigns. His arrival incited a competition at center between Tippmann and himself. Tippmann is making the most of the situation, he recently told The New York Post at training camp. 'At first, I mean, it took me by surprise a little bit,' Tippmann said after Wednesday's first day of training camp in Florham Park. 'But Coach [Aaron Glenn] actually called me first, and he kind of let me know the situation beforehand. So after that, I was just excited.' Tippmann started all 17 contests for the Jets last season, playing every single offensive snap. Coach Glenn provided clarity, repeatedly reiterating that there is an open competition 'at every position." It lit a fire under Tippmann, who didn't expect to be competing for a starting gig. "It was certainly made clear that it's a competition," Myers said at the podium, reiterating that he's been told he'll receive every opportunity imaginable this summer to compete for a starting job. It'll be worth monitoring how the Jets split first-team reps between Tippmann and Myers throughout training camp. It would be shocking if Myers actually defeated Tippmann for the starting job. Instead, the Jets should have terrific depth behind their young, ascending center this year.

Commanders to induct legendary wide receiver Santana Moss into Ring of Fame

A big surprise for Tana to end today's live show 💛 Before Terry McLaurin in Washington, there was Santana Moss. Criminally underrated, model citizen, beloved by teammates, coaches, and fans, not a diva, and never having sustained quality quarterback play. Now, the team is honoring Moss. Moss, who works for the team's broadcast crew, was surprised by fellow broadcast partner and team legend Brian Mitchell. During Washington's Week 1 game against the New York Giants, the Commanders will induct Moss into the franchise's Ring of Fame. Here's Moss learning the news from Mitchell: A first-round pick of the New York Jets in the 2001 NFL draft, the Redskins traded disgruntled wide receiver Laveranues Coles to the Jets for Moss ahead of the 2005 season. Coles initially began his career with the Jets, but signed with Washington as a free agent in 2003. He was unhappy in Joe Gibbs' offense and wanted out. Washington then made one of the best trades in franchise history, sending Coles to the Jets in a straight-up deal for Moss. In only his second game for the Redskins, Moss caught two late fourth-quarter touchdowns to shock the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. His legendary status with the franchise was already cemented. Moss would play 10 seasons in the burgundy and gold, catching 581 passes for 7,867 yards and 47 touchdowns. He finished his 14-year NFL career with 732 receptions, 10,283 yards and 66 touchdowns. Congratulations to Santana Moss!

Cowboys quarterback takes swipe at former teammates as he embraces fresh start

The Dallas Cowboys acquired Joe Milton from the New England Patriots in the offseason to add some more depth behind starting quarterback Dak Prescott for the 2025 season. Milton spoke glowingly about his new Cowboys teammates and took a swipe at the Patriots' locker room in the process. New England selected Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and he was in a quarterback room with Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett last season. Jerod Mayo was the head coach for the Patriots last season. "Dak is a great leader. All respect to him. He literally goes out of his way to help me, no matter if the coach is talking in the meeting, he literally goes out of his way to help. I've been in another building. I know how that goes. It's just very different over here," Milton said on Friday, via The Athletic. He said he "preferred" to have a fresh start somewhere new. "That was something me and my team put together. They were able to get it done, I really didn't have to do much or say much. So just shout out to my agent, that's pretty much it." Milton only appeared in one game for the Patriots last season. He was 22-of-29 with 241 passing yards and one touchdown pass. He's considered to have massive potential, should he ever get a shot at becoming a starter in the NFL. Milton is projected to be the backup quarterback heading into the regular season behind Prescott. Will Grier is slotted at QB3. Prescott will look to stay healthy for Dallas. He only managed to play in eight games in 2024.
