Atlanta Hawks select Georgia's Asa Newell in first round of the 2025 NBA draft
It seemed destined from his high school years that Newell would become a first round NBA draft pick. Newell was the 19th ranked prospect in the nation coming out of high school when he committed to the Georgia Bulldogs on Oct. 25, 2023.

He showed his immense talent through just one season with the Bulldogs. As a freshman, Newell led all Bulldogs in points per game (15.4) and rebounds per game (6.9), and was second in blocks per game (1.0). He was the No. 1 option for a Georgia Bulldogs team that made the NCAA March Madness Tournament for the first time since 2015.
Some analysts mocked the Atlanta Hawks selecting Newell with pick No. 22, a pick the Hawks acquired in the Dejounte Murray trade. However, the Hawks traded pick No. 22 to the Nets to acquire Kristaps Porzingis from the Celtics the day before the draft.
Then, on draft day, the Hawks dealt pick No. 13 (acquired from Sacramento in a trade for Kevin Huerter) to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for pick No. 23 and an unprotected first from 2026. It will be the more valuable one of the two first rounders the Pelicans own in 2026 (theirs and Milwaukee's).
The Hawks selection of Newell is reminiscent of when the Falcons drafted Jalon Walker with the 15th pick to keep him in Georgia. It's easy for Georgia fans to root for a former Bulldog on an Atlanta team, and now, Georgia fans get to watch two former Bulldogs grow into stars in two different sports.

Addison Barger and Nathan Lukes also connected as AL East-leading Toronto improved to 27-10 in its last 37 games. Bo Bichette had two hits and All-Star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked three times. José Berríos (5-3) pitched six innings of one-run ball, bouncing back nicely after he struggled in a no-decision against the New York Yankees on Wednesday. The right-hander improved to 16-6 with a 2.96 ERA in 27 career starts against Chicago. Mike Tauchman had three hits and two RBIs for the last-place White Sox, who won two of three at Toronto last month. Colson Montgomery, one of the team's top prospects, went 0 for 3 with a walk in his home debut. The Blue Jays opened an 8-1 lead when they scored five times in the sixth. Barger hit a two-run drive off Sean Burke for his 12th homer, and Loperfido chopped a two-run single over a drawn-in infield. Advertisement Burke (4-8) was charged with six runs and six hits in five-plus innings. The right-hander allowed two earned runs in 16 1/3 innings over his previous three outings. Red Sox hit 3 home runs, power past Rockies 9-3 to post 4th straight victory
BOSTON (AP) — Roman Anthony hit a two-run home run, Ceddanne Rafaela homered for the third straight game and the Boston Red beat the the Colorado Rockies 9-3 on Monday night. Boston rookie Richard Fitts (1-3) allowed five hits, two earned runs and struck out six over 5 2/3 innings to notch his first major league victory. Romy Gonzalez added a solo homer, and Abraham Toro had a two-run double to help Boston post its fourth straight win and seventh in nine games. Rockies starter Austin Gomber (0-2) exited after 4 2/3 innings, yielding five runs and seven hits, including Anthony's homer. Colorado's first run of the game was set up by a throwing error on Boston shortstop Trevor Story. In the sixth inning, the Rockies pulled to 5-3 on a fielder's choice RBI by Michael Toglia and RBI single by Ryan McMahon. But Boston added to its lead an inning later via RBI singles by Jarren Duran and Carlos Narváez Key moment With the score tied 1-1 in the second, Toro hit a line drive double over the head of Toglia, scoring Tyler Freeman and Carlos Narváez.
