The Dallas Cowboys offseason ahead of the 2024 campaign was notoriously inactive, with just one external free agent hardly feeling like such in the reunion with running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys were desperate for some help in the backfield after leading rusher Tony Pollard darted to another team. Fans pleaded for the Cowboys to contact either of the game's two best running backs who both happened to be free agents: Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley.
Henry would sign with the Baltimore Ravens and eventually have his best season in years, earning himself a high-dollar extension this offseason to stay in Baltimore.
Barkley would be even better. After beginning his career with the New York Giants and slowly inching toward stardom (when he was healthy), Barkley broke out for 2,000 rushing yards in 2024 on the way to being an integral part in the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl title run.
Cowboys fans' frustration grew not just after the Eagles dominated the NFC East with Barkley, but when they learned that Dallas had not contacted either of the star ball carriers throughout free agency ... even when they were obvious fits for the team.

Barkley remembers that offseason well, and at a recent celebrity softball game issued some noteworthy remarks about his division foes.
"Nah, never heard a word from the [Washington] Commanders or Dallas," Barkley said of his free agency last year. "That's why it's 'BTA' (beat that expletive) when I see them."
Now hold on.
There's no question Barkley and the Eagles beat up on their opposition for most of last season (except losing to Washington in Week 15). That includes two bludgeoning affairs over the Cowboys in Week 10 and 17.
But shouldn't Saquon always have a "BTA" mindset against his division rivals? He has played in the NFC East for his entire seven-year career.

Six of those years, of course, were spent on the lowly Giants, who have taken up real estate at the bottom of the division in recent seasons.
Let's look at the numbers...
Barkley has a career 2-10 record against the Cowboys as of today ... with those two wins coming with the Eagles last season.
Meaning ...
He was 0-10 against the Cowboys in his tenure pre-Philly and when Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott is healthy.
As our CowboysCountry.com insider Mike Fisher puts it: "So - as great as he is - Saquon DOES NOT "beat that [bleep]" v. Dallas."
Hats off to Barkley for feeling a sense of confidence in this rivalry now that he's finally felt what it's like to win it.

But ...
If this is his first time with any motivation toward the NFC East, then what does that really tell us about how much "beating" has gone on?
The Eagles and Cowboys won't have to wait long to settle this feud in 2025, as one of the NFL's best rivalries kicks off the regular-season schedule on Thursday Night Football in Philly on Sept. 4.

Jerry Jones doesn't seem too worried about getting Micah Parsons' deal done right away

Emmitt Smith's contract holdout was more than three decades ago, but it's still memorable. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn't forgotten about it. In 1993 Smith was coming off his second straight rushing title and held out, wanting a new contract. The holdout lasted two games into the regular season, and the Cowboys started 0-2. The two sides then came to an agreement on a deal that made Smith the highest paid running back in NFL history (four years and $13.6 million ... contracts have gone up a bit). Smith ended up winning NFL MVP and the Cowboys won a Super Bowl. Jones remembers that holdout and others in which the Cowboys waited it out, which indicates he isn't going to panic about the Micah Parsons situation. 'It took a long time with Emmitt Smith,' Jones told Jarrett Bell of USA Today. 'Same thing with (Zack) Martin two years ago. (CeeDee) Lamb last year." It's a theme for the Cowboys. Parsons requested a trade, but Jones probably isn't going to speed up negotiations that much. Jerry Jones explains Micah Parsons situation The tone of the pace of negotiations was summed up by a Jones quote over the weekend, after the trade request, in which he advised Cowboys fans: "Don't lose any sleep over it." Jones is a shrewd businessman and it seems that while the rest of the NFL world and especially Dallas is worried about what happens next with Parsons, the Cowboys owner seems like he's actually enjoying the standoff. "This is a negotiation," Jones said, via the team's site. "Does it blow me up? Somebody to say, 'Look, trade me.' That's just not a flare sign for me at all in any way." Jones has reasons to not worry too much. Parsons can request a trade all he wants but that doesn't force the Cowboys into dealing him. Parsons has a year left on his rookie deal and Jones referenced in his interview with USA Today the two franchise tags the team used on DeMarcus Lawrence and Dak Prescott before signing them to long-term deals. Theoretically, if the Cowboys wanted to dig in, they could use back-to-back franchise tags on Parsons too and drag it out until after the 2027 season. Parsons' leverage is that the Cowboys would be at a significant competitive disadvantage if he sat out games during his holdout. Jones doesn't seem too worried though. Jones preaches patience again Generally, the Cowboys have gotten deals done. They did with Smith, they got a long-term deal with Dez Bryant done right at the deadline for extending franchise-tagged players, Prescott and Lawrence got long-term deals after franchise tags, Martin and Lamb got their contracts too after some August drama. People can criticize Jones for waiting, and often paying more, but it's not changing. Jones has argued that doing a deal early has its drawbacks too, and he keeps doubling down on that approach. 'Let me say this just right,' Jones told USA Today. "I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't do it that way. I should be trying to get the most value for the Cowboys. I've seen players I wish we had renegotiated their contracts earlier and I've had several that I was sorry I renegotiated their contract earlier. The idea that if you wait there's more money (spent) forgets that in between that wait, you get to evaluate and you frankly get to see if you're dealing with the same physical elements of it.' So everyone is in a holding pattern. There's more than a month before the Cowboys' first game. The Cowboys don't seem inclined to entertain trade calls for Parsons. Parsons will continue to hold out as he looks for a deal that will likely make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. And Jones will keep waiting. He has made that clear.

Sean McVay shares advice for Liam Coen as first-time head coach for Jaguars

McVay says Coen is "way ahead of the curve" compared to where he was at in 2017 Sean McVay and Liam Coen have a long coaching history together. Coen has had multiple coaching stints with the Rams, including one as the assistant wide receivers coach from 2018-2019, assistant quarterbacks coach in 2020, and then a return as the offensive coordinator in 2022 after a departure for Kentucky in the 2021 season. Coen finds himself in a new light, being hired as the head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars during the offseason. McVay and Coen have remained close since their time together on the Rams. McVay has been a shoulder that Coen can lean on for advice, especially given the success McVay's had with two Super Bowl appearances in just eight years with the team. 'Oh yeah, Liam and I talk a lot, and I think it's about leaning on the people around you and not feeling like you have all the answers," McVay said when asked about Coen on Saturday. "This is something McVay has been very vocal about his whole career, considering he was hired to right the ship in 2017 at just 30 years old, making him the youngest head coach of all time. Coen, a Warwick, RI, native, finds himself in a similar spot as McVay, being only 39 years old and a first-time head coach himself at the NFL level. McVay has more to say on Coen, reassuring the importance of having the right people around you. 'Make sure that you do a great job of being able to delegate to the great people that you've surrounded yourself with," McVay said of his advice for Coen. "Liam knows way more than I knew when I first got the job, so he's way ahead of the curve like all of these other guys that are getting their opportunities to go do their thing. So, they won't make the same mistakes I did.' That's some very high praise from someone who has had as much immediate success as McVay did in L.A. Coen will look to right the ship in Jacksonville after a 4-13 season that was filled with injuries and lacked star power throughout the roster in 2024. Being a first-year head coach is filled with new experiences, ups and downs, and adversity throughout the whole process, something Coen will have to navigate in his first year at the helm.
