The Hindu17-07-2025
Punjab National Bank (PNB) executive director D. Surendran on Thursday said that financial institutions such as banks play a key role in creating sustainable infrastructure aligned with the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision.
Addressing the Monthly Retail Outreach programme organised by PNB's Visakhapatnam Circle Office, Mr. Surendran said, 'Banks are no longer mere intermediaries; they are now enablers of long-term development. Housing loans, for example, generate both assets and social stability.'
The event drew participation from stakeholders in real estate, auto-mobile, and renewable energy sectors, in particular. The bank showcased its diverse retail portfolio — including housing, vehicle, mortgage loans, rooftop solar financing, and digital services — through over 20 stalls.
CREDAI Visakhapatnam chairman V. Dharmender, who attend the event as the guest of honour, stressed the need for EMI flexibility to support self-employed borrowers. 'The real estate market is stabilising, and innovative banking products can further accelerate recovery,' he said.
Loan sanction letters for home and education categories were handed over to eligible customers during the programme.

Amit Shah unveils policy to set up one cooperative unit in every village

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah unveiled the National Cooperative Policy 2025 at the Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan on Thursday, stating that the government is moving forward with the goal of having at least one cooperative in every village. The policy aimed to strengthen grassroots cooperative units and ensure inclusive growth, especially among villages, farmers, women, Dalits, and tribal communities. Speaking at the event, Amit Shah said, "In 2002, the Government of India introduced the Cooperative Policy. At that time, the BJP was in the government. The second Cooperative Policy has been brought by the BJP government. We are moving forward with a goal to have at least one cooperative in every village." "The government's viewpoint, which understands India, its development, and all the factors necessary for India's development, is the only one that can give importance to the cooperative sector. If the basic unit of the country and the economy is prosperous, employed and satisfied, then that economic model can never fail." Shah added. The minister highlighted the core vision and mission behind the new policy, stating that it placed people and rural development at the centre of the plan. "While making the cooperative policy, it was taken care of that the central point of the policy will be people, villages, agriculture, women of the village, Dalits, tribals. In one sentence, its vision is to make a developed India in 2047 through the prosperity of cooperation," Shah said. He elaborated on the mission, saying, "Its mission is to develop professional, transparent, technical, responsible and financially independent and successful small cooperative units." According to the Ministry of Cooperation, the new cooperative policy 2025 aims to revive and modernise the cooperative sector, as well as realise the vision of prosperity through cooperation by creating a roadmap at the grassroots. In 2002, India's first National Cooperative Policy was issued, providing a basic framework for the better management of economic activities within cooperative institutions. "In the last 20 years, many major changes have taken place in society, the country and the world due to globalisation and technological advancement. Keeping these changes in mind, it became necessary to formulate a new policy so that cooperative institutions can be made more active and useful in the current economic scenario and the role of the cooperative sector can be strengthened in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047," said the Ministry. The objective of the National Cooperative Policy is to make cooperative institutions inclusive, manage them professionally, prepare them for the future, and be able to create large-scale employment and livelihood opportunities, especially in rural India. India to expand cooperation for extraditing economic offenders: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said Indian security agencies will continue to strengthen cooperation with foreign counterparts on issues related to the extradition of economic offenders. Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India speak during a press conference after signing a free trade agreement at Chequers near Aylesbury, England, Thursday, July 24, 2025. (AP) 'Our security agencies will continue to enhance cooperation and coordination on matters such as the extradition of economic offenders,' he said. The statement, made during his visit to the United Kingdom, comes at a time when Indian authorities are pressing for the return of several high-profile individuals facing charges ranging from financial fraud to money laundering. These include Nirav Modi, accused in the ₹6,498 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, whose tenth bail plea was recently rejected by a London court; Vijay Mallya, wanted in connection with a ₹9,000 crore loan default case; and Sanjay Bhandari, facing charges under the Official Secrets Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. India has also sought the extradition of Hajra Memon, widow of underworld figure Iqbal Mirchi, along with her sons Asif and Junaid Memon, in connection with money laundering and organised crime cases. Mallya fled India in 2016 and has been residing in the UK since then. In December last year, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Lok Sabha that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had so far restituted ₹14,000 crore worth of assets to various banks through the sale of Mallya's properties. In the case of Nirav Modi, investigations have revealed that he secured his first fraudulent letter of undertaking (LoU) from PNB on March 10, 2011, and went on to obtain 1,212 such guarantees over the next 74 months. The LoUs were used to funnel money to a web of dummy companies registered in offshore tax havens, including the British Virgin Islands. Nirav Modi and his relatives fled India in early 2018, just days before the scam became public. He remains in a UK prison as Indian authorities continue to push for his extradition.
