Dr. Falguni Shah, Dermatologist and Founder at Radiance Skin Clinic, shares what you need to know:
There's No Such Thing as Perfect Skin
Thanks to filters and unrealistic beauty standards, people now chase skin that doesn't exist — things like 'glass skin" or 'poreless skin." But real, healthy skin has:

'When I assess someone's skin, I look for just three things," says Dr. Shah.
That's it. You don't need flawless skin. You need healthy skin.
What Goes Wrong?
The trouble starts when people overload their skin with trending products, acids, serums, or peels without understanding what they do.
Take salicylic acid, vitamin C, or retinols, these are fantastic when used correctly. But when used in the wrong combination or dosage, they can damage your skin's barrier — the outer layer that keeps your skin hydrated and protected.
Once this barrier is compromised, your skin becomes:

● Prone to acne
● Sensitive to sun and pollution
'I see it so often that we now use the term 'Sensitive Skin Syndrome' — it's not even in older textbooks, but today, it's real and common," says Dr. Shah.
The Problem with DIY Hacks
Home remedies might feel 'natural," but they aren't always safe. Rubbing toothpaste, tomato, lemon, or multani mitti on your face can cause burns, dehydration, or long-term irritation.
'Here's what people often forget: your skin doesn't absorb everything you apply. Only molecules of the right size and structure get through. That means applying food items on your face usually does nothing or worse, it harms your skin. These things are far more helpful when you eat them."
Blindly Following Influencers? Think Again
Dr. Shah recalls, 'I've had patients come in asking for chemical peels just because they saw it on Instagram. But what they didn't see was whether that influencer had a proper skin consultation first. And unfortunately, many salons offering such treatments don't have trained dermatologists."
The result? Burns, scars, or pigmentation that could take months (or more) to treat.
So, Is Social Media All Bad?
Not at all. In fact, many dermatologists — Dr. Shah included — now use social media to share accurate, science-based advice. The platform itself isn't the issue. The problem is not verifying who the advice is coming from.
Before you try any new product or treatment, check the source. And when in doubt, talk to a professional.
If there's one thing Dr. Shah wants everyone to remember, it's this: treat your skin like an organ, not a beauty project. Be kind to it. Be patient with it. And please, don't let a trending reel dictate how you care for it.

Dr Falguni shared a detailed guide with us, outlining the key habits one should adopt to ensure their makeup routine doesn't trigger skin issues: 1. Jeffrey Lyle Mason, a US based dentist who had been experiencing sleep disturbances was sure the issue was related to some stomach ailment. He underwent a procedure to prevent the stomach acid from flowing backward but did not get much relief. It seemed like forever to get a revision surgery in the United States and the dentist decided to research medical tourism. According to Dr Mason, the procedure in the US did not provide relief and the magnetic device had slipped into the chest and was closely stuck to the oesophagus. Removing it without any injury to the vital structures and nerves of the stomach was crucial to preserve the anti-reflux functioning. However the revision surgery — a fundoplication, a surgical procedure used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) was taking a while. 'I hopped on Deepseek that guided me about Mexico, Costa Rica and India,' Dr Mason recalled and further research on some of the best surgeons in India led him to Pune. He told The Indian Express that his search led him to Pune's Dr Shashank Shah and team and he soon got an appointment for a surgery. 'A few days before I was set to fly to India, I started having severe pain in the abdomen area and was grateful to have got the appointment as I needed that surgery,' Dr Mason said. The revision surgery went off well and Dr Mason said that he was grateful for the vital communication from Dr Shah's team. 'They were very accommodating,' he added. When contacted, Dr Shashank Shah, noted laparoscopic bariatric surgeon said that Dr Mason had been operated upon at Las Vegas last year. 'He was operated with a magnetic anti-reflux device. Unfortunately, the device slipped into his chest leading to discomfort and hence decided to connect with gastrointestinal surgeons across the world. He did his own research and we are happy that Dr Mason selected Pune. The surgery was undertaken on May 16 this year. The magnetic device was removed and the hiatus hernia operated upon.. He recovered well and returned on May 20 to the United States,' Dr Shah said. At the LaparoObeso centre in Pune that performs complex and advanced surgeries, Dr Shah said that they had seen almost one patient every month from countries like Malaysia, Dubai, Australia, Abu Dhabi, UK and others. 'Medical tourism is on the rise post Covid -19 and at our centre patients have been largely seeking treatment for complex hernia and bariatric surgeries,' Dr Shah added.
