'Got to give him a chance' - fans react to Struber

BBC News19-06-2025
Gerhard Struber has been announced as the new head coach of Bristol City. Here are some of your views on the appointment of the Austrian to replace Liam Manning.Kristian - I love the way the Austrian national team plays, and apparently it's hard coded into Austrian football. So to have an Austrian head coach with a reputation for that style of play, and an academy that's set up for it, makes me quite excited.Hedley - One thing I have to say is that any manager at City must have some help with bringing in fresh talent which we lacked in key areas especially in the play-offs as we were not in the same class as Sheffield United. Unless this happens it will be a difficult season.Kevin - Got to give the guy a chance but hope he plays two up front.Simon - On first impressions very positive. Talks a good game and seems passionate, only time will tell.Paul - No, it's a poor one again from the chairman.Alan - My only concern is that owner Steve Lansdown has shown little sign of seriously investing in this team. I only hope that Struber obtained some assurances about strengthening City (particularly up front) before committing.Clive - We as fans don't know how good or bad the new manager will be but after 10 games will have a good idea. The first thing for us as fans will be to see if and who the board allow him to move on from the poor strike force we have and replace them with decent forwards or he will fail.Mark - Struber wasn't first on my list let alone in the top five - Steve Lansdown said we should aim to repeat last season's performance but I'd love to see us finish in the top five and should we end up in the play-offs again we have to go and win it, that's the next logical step. Anything less then a top-six finish will be a disappointing season.

Arfield convinced Falkirk 'will shock people' in Premiership

Scott Arfield says there is "absolutely no doubt" Falkirk will "surprise a few people" on their top-flight 36-year-old midfielder returned to Falkirk in February, 15 years after leaving, and played a key role in the club's promotion."It is exciting times for everybody connected to the football club to see this team back in the top division," the former Rangers player told BBC Scotland."To see the enthusiasm and positivity through their eyes, you relive it again. Some of [the fans] have probably never seen the club in this division, they're that young, it's going to be amazing for them to see it."You're excited for them to give them that back, and obviously as a professional player coming into the twilight years, you try and relive it again and enjoy it as much as you can."There's absolutely no doubt we'll surprise a few people, but we need to have one eye on the calibre of player and the teams we're playing against this year."

Arsenal sign goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea

Arsenal have signed goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea. The 30-year-old Spaniard spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, making 35 appearances in all competitions. Advertisement Arsenal had brought in Neto from the Cherries as back-up to David Raya, but the Brazilian has returned to the Cherries following the end of his own season-long loan. Kepa, who spent the 2023/24 campaign at Real Madrid, has signed a three-year deal, the PA news agency understands. The fee is reported to be around £5 million (€5.8 million), with the transfer subject to the completion of regulatory processes. 'I'm really, really happy to be here, really excited and looking forward to what is coming,' Kepa told Arsenal's website. 'The ambition that is shown in this club, when I talk with Mikel (Arteta) and (goalkeeping coach) Inaki (Cana), how much they show me their desire to win, I think we are so close to winning and, hopefully, altogether, we can achieve it.' Advertisement Kepa became the world's most expensive goalkeeper when he joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in a £71 million (€82.6 million) deal during the summer of 2018, going on to win the Europa League and Champions League with the Blues as well as the 2023 UEFA Nations League with Spain. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is confident Kepa will provide plenty of competition for his compatriot Raya. 'He is a player we know, having come up against him many times in recent seasons,' Arteta said. 'He brings a wealth of experience, which his team-mates will benefit from, and he has a real hunger to win. 'Kepa works hard and will elevate our levels. I know he will fit in perfectly, already knowing some of his team-mates, and we are really excited about his future with us.' Advertisement Arsenal also appear to be closing in on deals for Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard and Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi. The Gunners are in need of midfield reinforcements, with Thomas Partey having become a free agent after his contract expired and Jorginho also leaving the club earlier this month to join Brazilian club Flamengo.
