Google just lost an appeal against opening up Google Play to Epic Games and others — what this means for you

You should probably expect to see some changes happening to Google Play in the near future, as Google has just lost its appeal in an antitrust case brought forward by Epic Games. This means the company is going to have to make some serious changes to its app store policies (via Bloomberg).
The ruling comes from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the most important part of it is that the Google Play Store needs to lift restrictions that make it harder for rival app stores to operate. Android may be a more open system than iOS, in terms of app installation, but the strict app store policies were never exclusive to Apple.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has praised the ruling, claiming that it would allow Epic to distribute its own Epic Game Store via Google Play. Essentially, this means you won't need to sideload the alternative app store.
Bloomberg notes that the ruling also allows developers to set up their own billing systems, rather than filtering everything through Google Play, which involves paying Google commission on each transaction.
Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Mandeep Singh said that increased third-party billing systems are the bigger problem for Google — estimating that it could be "a $1-$1.5 billion drag on the company's gross profits."
Google is not particularly happy about the ruling, naturally. "This decision will significantly harm user safety, limit choice, and undermine the innovation that has always been central to the Android ecosystem," said Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google's vice president for regulatory affairs.
"Our top priority remains protecting our users and developers, and ensuring a secure platform as we continue our appeal.

From the sounds of things, this isn't the end of Google's fight, and it's likely that Google will be taking the appeals process further, and to the Supreme Court.

Adtech company OpenX sues Google, accusing it of anticompetitive tactics that 'crippled' its growth

OpenX has sued Google for anticompetitive practices in the digital advertising market. The adtech company alleged that Google's tactics "crippled competitors like OpenX at every turn." A federal judge has ruled Google holds an illegal monopoly in advertising technology markets. Adtech company OpenX has accused Google of repeatedly kneecapping its growth through anticompetitive tactics in the digital advertising market — and now it wants payback. OpenX on Monday piggybacked on an antitrust lawsuit previously filed against Google by the US Department of Justice with a lawsuit of its own. The supply-side platform's 88-page lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, said that the tech behemoth's illegal business practices "crippled competitors like OpenX at every turn," making it impossible for them to compete on a "level playing field." Google, the company alleged in its lawsuit, targeted OpenX and used its dominance in the online ad space "to rig the rules by which digital advertising is bought and sold, to the detriment of OpenX and the entire industry." OpenX alleged in its complaint that Google's conduct has "stifled innovation, harmed competition, decreased product quality and caused significant damage to OpenX, as well as to Google's own publisher and advertiser customers." Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Business Insider. OpenX's lawsuit comes less than four months after a federal judge in the same court ruled that Google holds an illegal monopoly in certain online advertising technology markets. The April ruling followed a trial that stemmed from a DOJ lawsuit, which argued that Google used acquisitions and anticompetitive ad auction tactics to build an illegal monopoly of the digital ad market. Judge Leonie Brinkema found Google liable for monopolizing the publisher ad servers and ad exchange markets. OpenX appears to be the first adtech company to bring a related lawsuit against Google since Brinkema's ruling. Google owns an ad server that publishers use to manage their inventory, buying tools that advertisers use to purchase ads, and an ad exchange that connects the two. The judge said that the combination of its ad server and ad exchange gave Google significant control over which ads appear on websites. The court could potentially force a breakup of Google's adtech business. Google plans to appeal the judge's ruling. (The remedies portion of the trial is set to begin on September 22.) "Now that the Court has found Google's conduct to be illegal and anticompetitive, this lawsuit seeks to recover damages for the harm caused to us and our shareholders — and to help ensure fair competition going forward," OpenX CEO John Gentry said in a statement. OpenX's lawsuit said that the California-based company, founded in 2008, has only a small percentage of the multibillion-dollar ad exchange market and that its publisher ad server "was driven out of the market by Google's conduct" and shut down in 2019. "Among other things, Google has coerced publishers not to work with OpenX through illegal tying arrangements, exploited its monopolies to rig digital advertising auctions so that OpenX wins fewer transactions, and steered advertiser dollars that Google controls away from OpenX and towards Google's own ad exchange, all while concealing much of its conduct from both OpenX and Google's own advertising customers," the lawsuit said. The lawsuit seeks a jury trial, an unspecified amount in damages, and an injunction "prohibiting Google's anticompetitive conduct." Reddit Accelerates Innovation and Slashes Build Times with Buildkite

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Buildkite Pty Ltd., a leader in scalable software delivery solutions, today announced that Reddit, one of the world's largest online communities with more than over 400M weekly active users, has successfully migrated its mobile continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines to Buildkite, dramatically improving build performance, reliability, and developer autonomy across its mobile engineering organization. By adopting Buildkite's high-performance hosted agents and dynamic pipeline primitives, Reddit has reduced build queue times to just seconds and accelerated build speeds by 30% for both Android and iOS workflows, while maintaining cost efficiency. By adopting Buildkite's high-performance hosted agents and dynamic pipeline primitives, Reddit has reduced build queue times to just seconds and accelerated build speeds by 30% for both Android and iOS workflows, while maintaining cost efficiency. Share 'With Buildkite, we finally have the reliability and performance at scale that our mobile teams were missing,' said Ken Struys, Reddit's Director of Developer Experience. 'We've seen a significant improvement to the overall developer experience, and both Android and iOS CI are more than 30% faster on Buildkite.' Facing growing demands from millions of global users and a rapidly expanding codebase, Reddit's mobile teams had outgrown their previous CI/CD provider. Lack of ability to control the build environment meant they couldn't use custom Docker images (as they can with Buildkite). The team also struggled with configuration complexity, with 6,000 lines of YAML split across multiple files, in addition to unreliable builds due to environment drift and dependency failures. Reddit's migration to Buildkite, affecting over 200 mobile engineers, was completed ahead of schedule and involved a full transition of both Android and iOS mono repositories. The company leveraged Buildkite's composable pipeline primitives to create custom workflows that seamlessly integrated with Bazel and BuildBuddy, allowing both iOS and Android apps to be built efficiently on Linux runners with remote execution. Dynamic pipelines enabled Reddit to build powerful CI systems with less cruft and less code repetition. Comprehensive benchmarking revealed that Reddit's builds now run up to 30% faster, with job queue times consistently dropping to around five seconds. Buildkite's Git caching and container caching features were 'absolute game changers,' reducing Git checkout times from several minutes to 30-40 seconds. Intelligent build cancellation and log customization further improved developer experience and operational efficiency. The migration was conducted by a remarkably lean core team. 'We built most of the Android pipelines and the iOS pipelines with two people,' said Struys. 'You don't need massive engineering resources to use Buildkite, but the scale is tremendous. We've got 170 plus engineers on it now, and most of our builds are running like 12 to 15 jobs in each field now.' It was also executed with exceptional care through a staged approach, including having shadow builds running in parallel to production systems to ensure a zero-risk transition. Buildkite's team provided responsive support and delivered custom feature requests, including a GitHub App for GitHub Enterprise Server, throughout the process. "Reddit's successful migration exemplifies the transformative power of modern, composable CI/CD architecture," said Dan Ring, Vice President of Product at Buildkite, who worked closely with the company on the migration. "When engineering organizations outgrow traditional CI/CD limitations, they need a platform that can deliver both immediate performance gains and long-term scalability. Reddit's experience demonstrates what's possible when you combine Buildkite's high-performance hosted agents with our flexible, composable primitives. This isn't just about faster builds, it's about unleashing engineering teams to innovate at the speed their users demand." For more information, see Reddit's blog post here. Pixel 10 tease — Google is having a blast poking fun at Apple's Siri failures

Google will officially announce the Pixel 10 series at the end of August during its next Made by Google event. That hasn't stopped the Mountain View company from teasing its flagship phone line as a mind-boggling number of leaks continue to pour out. On Monday (August 4), Google posted a teaser ad on its YouTube channel that takes digs at Apple over its ongoing struggle to release an updated AI-powered version of Siri. The video is also set to an instrumental version of "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre, another poke at Apple since the company owns Beats by Dr. Dre. The ad references how Apple announced several Apple Intelligence features and Siri upgrades during WWDC 2024. The rollout of Apple Intelligence has been slow and, in some cases, delayed until 2026. As Google implies, many of its announced AI capabilities are already available in its Gemini AI platform. Meanwhile, regular image leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer (OnLeaks on X) teamed up with Android Headlines to share new renders of the Pixel 10 from just about every angle. The leaks show off the phone in the rumored "Frost" colorway kind of a silvery-white. For the most part, the Pixel 10 resembles last year's Google Pixel 9. You'll notice that the camera array is slightly different, largely thanks to the addition of a third camera, making the glass a bit bigger. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. It should feature a 48MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide and a 10.8MP telephoto sensor, the same as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It may be hard to tell from the renders, but Google is reportedly keeping the matte finish on the sides and back of the phone, the same as last year's base phone. The Pro models are allegedly sticking to glossy. The phone should have a 6.3-inch OLED display plus the Tensor G5 processor, a 3nm processor made by TSMC. Again, Google is set to announce the Pixel 10 series, where we expect to see the base model, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL Pixel 10 Pro Fold, as well as the Pixel Watch 4. The Pixel 10 is rumored to start at $799 for the 128GB version, with the 256GB variant selling for $899.
