Motherwell striker hopes injury nightmare is behind him

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos wants his goal against Morton to be the start of a new chapter Apostolos Stamatelopoulos hopes his first goal in seven months means he can put last season's injury nightmare behind him. ‌ The Australian striker had barely set foot in Lanarkshire before tearing a thigh muscle in his first start, a 2-1 defeat against Rangers at Hampden, then scored in a 2-2 Fir Park draw against the Ibrox club in December, and then suffered a calf injury. ‌ As he was staging a comeback from those injuries, Stamatelopoulos fractured a wrist in a freak training accident in March that ended his season. ‌ So netting the opener in Tuesday night's 3-0 win over Morton to win Premier Sports Cup Group G and qualify for the last-16 was a major relief for the 26-year-old from Adelaide. The striker showed predatory instinct to bundle the ball in after Morton keeper James Storer had superbly parried Johnny Koutroumbis' netbound volley, his first goal since December 29. He said: 'Being out for seven months, it was a tough time. From game to game it has been a while, and it's the first time that has happened in my career, so it's taken a bit of adjusting to get back to that. 'It has definitely been tough. I mean, the whole of last season, I would have said, was pretty tough. 'There was a little bit of a run of games where I thought OK, I'm starting to feel like myself again, and then I got injured again. 'The broken wrist was in training, just a freak accident, really. We were playing small-sided games, one of the boys took a shot and hit me from like a metre away, and it shattered. It was just unlucky. ‌ 'I'm just putting it behind me and looking forward to playing games week in, week out, and scoring goals. 'It's good that I've got a full pre-season now under my belt and I feel confident in my body. ‌ 'I've still got a long, long way to go, but I'm getting there and I'm looking forward to the season. 'I mean, no-one's really going to remember in six months' time how the goal went in. 'Once that went in, it was just like a massive relief after so long.' ‌ Stamatelopoulos' next forays are likely to be in a friendly against Hertha Berlin at Fir Park on Friday night, before they host Rangers in their Premiership opener on August 2. He said: 'Getting my first one, and thankfully it happened before the season started, means I'm definitely looking forward to the next two games. 'They'll be tough, but I'm looking forward to the challenge. ‌ 'I feel like my movement was decent, I could be a little bit sharper, but that's what I live for in the box. 'There were a few times where I gambled the wrong way, and I had made a different run, I would have had another couple of tap-ins. 'It's just finding that partnership with team-mates, knowing what they want to do in certain situations, and then more goals will come, for sure. 'Hopefully by the time the season comes I'm ready to go. I mean, that was my first time I played 90, so I started cramping towards the end, but the body's getting there. 'Every single time I had an injury, I was just taking each day as it comes. Like I'll do this season, every day as it comes, each match as it comes, and go from there.'

Livingston striker hopes his pace is perfect for slick new pitch

Zak Rudden hopes to hit the ground running at the West Lothian club Zak Rudden hopes blistering pace will help him on a fiery pitch at Livingston, and intends to blast in goals that will keep him in the team. ‌ The former Dundee and Partick Thistle hero has got off the mark already this term, with the clincher in a 2-0 win at home to Highland League Brora Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup, adding to Danny Wilson's opener. ‌ The Lions sit second in group H on six points after three games, as they host Kelty Hearts in their group finale on Saturday. ‌ Rudden, 25, bagged 15 goals in 47 games during a difficult season at Queen's Park, and after gunning down Brora, he said: 'It's good to get off the mark, and I've been biding my time, but I got the chance and I took it. 'There's good competition for places here. The gaffer spoke to me about that when I was coming in, and it's something I'm relishing. 'There's good competition, I've got to get my spot, and once I get it, try and keep it, but I'm not thinking it's going to be easy.' Livingston have recently installed a new pitch, with boss David Martindale holding several training sessions on it to get players used to the surface. Rudden said: 'I think the new pitch will suit my style sometimes, other times not so much because it's going so quick at the same time and I'm running so fast at the same time. It's a very fiery pitch and it's something we need to get used to, and quickly.' ‌ Edinburgh-born Rudden, who came through the youth set-up at Rangers, says talking to Martindale had him convinced the West Lothian club was right for him, but was able to back that up by talking to several of his new team-mates. And he reckons Livingston are in a good place as they prepare for their Premiership opener at Kilmarnock on August 2. ‌ Rudden said: 'I spoke to the gaffer and it seemed like it suited me. I wanted to settle down at a club, and the way the gaffer was speaking to me, and the security of a two-year deal as well, it just seemed like everything fell into place. 'I like the way the gaffer's taking the club forward. I spoke to Ryan McGowan, I was with him at St Johnstone [during a loan spell in 2023] and I know Danny Wilson as well through Rangers when I was a young boy, and I was with him briefly at Queen's Park. 'I knew boys I could speak to and it was a good option for me. 'The boys here look in good shape as well.'

Commonwealth Games broadcast deal must be secured to ensure event is televised

The Commonwealth Games is at risk of a TV blackout, with no broadcast deal secured in the UK for its return to Glasgow next year. Next year's Commonwealth Games will be a slimmed-down effort compared to the last time the event was hosted in Glasgow in 2014. ‌ Just 11 sports will be contested across four existing venues in the city, with no purpose-built athletes' village. The budget for the event is a fraction of what it was more than a decade ago. ‌ But the Games will still see an array of sporting talent descend on the city. ‌ Watching the 100m or 200m sprints at a sold-out Scotstoun stadium is sure to be a fabulous occasion for all those lucky enough to attend. Tollcross remains one of the best elite swimming pools in the country, with the events held there certain to be thrilling spectacles. So it's alarming no UK broadcast deal has yet been secured to showcase the Games. ‌ The BBC said yesterday no agreement has been signed with organisers. We must hope talks reach a positive conclusion soon. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. And showcasing track and field stars from the likes of Australia, Canada and New Zealand is an opportunity not to be missed. ‌ And there will of course be the history-making opportunity for a generation of Scots athletes to win gold on home soil. The Commonwealth Games is still treasured by many sports fans. It's for that reason that a broadcast deal must be secured to ensure the event is televised across the UK. ‌ A TV blackout would be a real turn-off. Cosmetic cock-up SCOTLAND has long had a problem with backstreet Botox 'pop-ups' offering cheap – but not so cheerful – cosmetic procedures. Now medics are warning that more and more men are showing up at A&E departments suffering complications from these 'operations'. ‌ In some cases, men have gone to these unregulated clinics for penis filler injections but have suffered agonising consequences. There's no doubt the desire for bodily perfection is driven by the online world, where unrealistic images of men and women are being constantly peddled. ‌ This has created a market for unscrupulous operators to cash in on people's hang-ups. The Scottish Government has rightly announced plans for a crackdown on unregulated cosmetic cowboys. They are consulting on plans to make it illegal to provide these operations outwith certified medical settings. Such measures are long overdue. Until then, the message is clear – if you want to avoid horrific consequences, avoid these backstreet operators.
