Economic Times: Where should an MSME start their AI journey?

When it comes to AI, or in fact any technology, the start for any business should be to identify their pain point and then look at the solutions available. Let's simplify it by assuming a scenario that you have some repetitive tasks you want to get rid of and save cost. AI is the answer to that question. So, MSMEs should look at identifying the pain area first and then identify the solutions which AI can offer and then start by adopting it and aligning it with the business goals. Sometimes the business goal is saving, and sometimes the business goal is looking forward and taking the enterprise to the next level.

ET: What are some of the AI tools that SMEs must leverage to grow further as a business enterprise?

I deal with 20,000 MSMEs and they are my customers. The first tool which I always recommend is Google Workspace and Microsoft

right. These are the two tools which have an inbuilt AI.

Again, if you look at the AI race, these are the two big companies who are in the forefront of it. So, Google Workspace has Google Gemini which helps you from drafting your mail to analysing and summarising it. Plus, you have document creation, etc which makes it a very good tool for collaboration and AI adoption
The second tool which I recommend to my customers is Canva. You can create whatever image you want, create it in just 5 minutes. Earlier you depended on graphic designers to create something and then here you are, with
Canva
you can just command and it does it for you.
The third tool that I insist on my customers to use is called Suno. It creates music for you- from simple prompts, images or videos, write original lyrics, create a playlist and many more such features. When the environment is musical, you are more productive right and I have used this tool to create so many songs for my own company. I just play it in my office and people love it.
Similarly, you can use the very popular
ChatGPT
, Google Gemini, Zoho has Zoho Zia for analysing our own CRM data, which essentially means there are multiple tools available in the market. Most of these tools are very easy to use, the technology is simple for anyone to understand and adapt.
ET: What strategies can SMEs deploy to integrate AI tech better into their businesses? What are some of the low hanging fruit adoptions that SMEs should consider in AI?
PT:
I deal with many MSMEs and what I have realised is that most of the time they look at the cost, but they do not look at the opportunity. AI opens the door for bigger and better opportunities, and if you want to win the battle of tomorrow, you need the tools of today. So, most of the time MSMEs do not invest, they look at the cost. Now let us take a simple example like WhatsApp. Can they have auto replies on WhatsApp? We can all have it, and that is a simple AI tool. Similarly, there are AI tools to help you when participating in exhibitions. For example, it will capture the details of the visitor and send them an email, WhatsApp, with the catalogue, price list, whatever the exhibitor wants. My company generates approximately 10,000 invoices daily via automated systems, yet only two people are involved in the process. These two employees are only needed to validate that these invoices are correctly generated and randomly checked for any discrepancies.
Similarly, you can use an AI chatbot on your website to answer simple questions that your buyer or visitor may have. Everything from automating WhatsApp to invoicing to chatbots are very simple tools today and these are not very costly. They are as pay as you go models and if you do not like them, you can cancel the subscription next month.
ET: Tasks such as inventory management, customer service and accounting can be automated using AI, freeing up valuable time for business owners to focus on strategic activities. Do you feel AI is the next frontier for the MSME sector?
PT:
First, it was the industrial revolution, then came the knowledge revolution, and today it is the time of the AI revolution. A few days ago, this report said Google took five years to get its first billion users, ChatGPT took hardly one year, So, practically it is 5X faster and if you look at the Chat GPT user base, India stands number one, followed by the US. We are in the frontier of AI and it is just that we need to change our mindset, especially when it comes to MSMEs prioritising their focus area, prioritising their investment, and making sure that they identify if AI can help them.
I feel we are in the forefront of AI and we are going to reap the benefits of it, but at the same time we have a challenge. We have a problem where many people are not IT-skilled or say AI-skilled and this means there is going to be a huge divide between AI-enabled and non-AI enabled companies.

In the fifth year of CM Dhami's tenure, tax recovery in Uttarakhand is set for a major tech upgrade
Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami (ANI) As chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami enters the fifth year of his tenure, the tax collection landscape in Uttarakhand is poised for a significant transformation. The state's tax system is being enhanced with the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), aimed at making collections more efficient and robust. A proposal worth Rs 12 crore from the State Tax Department has received in-principle approval. The use of AI is expected to boost collections under both SGST (State Goods and Services Tax) and VAT (Value Added Tax). According to IS Brijwal, Additional Commissioner of the State Tax Department, efforts are underway — under the chief minister's directive — to further streamline and modernize the tax collection system. A comprehensive framework has already been prepared. While the department has already been leveraging technology, it is now preparing to implement AI-based systems. The government has given its in-principle nod to the department's proposal, and AI-based systems will soon become a reality in the state's revenue machinery. VAT collections for the same period stand at Rs 658 crore, achieving 26% of the annual target. Combined, these figures show the department has achieved 23% of its total target within the first three months of the year. The department achieved 93% of the total target last year, with VAT collection even surpassing the goal by reaching 102%. 'We are strengthening the tax collection system in the interest of the state. Our goal is to ensure that the revenue collected through taxes is maximised and effectively used for public welfare initiatives," CM Dhami said.

Crude ouput: OPEC+ opens oil tap wider before planned August hike, raising fears of price fall
OPEC+ will raise oil production faster than earlier planned in August, with eight key alliance members agreeing to increase output by 548,000 barrels a day, delegates said on Saturday after a virtual meeting. This is higher than the 411,000-barrel hikes announced for May, June and July, which were already triple the initial plan. Traders had anticipated the same increase for August, making the latest move a further acceleration. The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partners, led by Saudi Arabia, have changed course since April by prioritising market share over price control. The group has begun reviving supply that was previously cut, surprising traders and raising questions about its long-term approach. Brent crude futures have dropped 8.5% in 2025 so far due to the extra supply and concerns around demand amid President Trump's trade war and its impact on the global economy. Still, delegates said the short-term demand outlook appears stronger, especially in the northern hemisphere's summer. Foxconn reports record Q2 revenue, cautions about geopolitical and exchange rate risks
Taiwan's Foxconn, the world's largest contract electronics maker, reported record second-quarter revenue on strong demand for artificial intelligence products but cautioned about geopolitical and exchange rate headwinds. Revenue for Apple's biggest iPhone assembler jumped 15.82% year-on-year to T$1.797 trillion, Foxconn said in a statement on Saturday, beating the T$1.7896 trillion LSEG SmartEstimate, which gives greater weight to forecasts from analysts who are more consistently accurate. Robust AI demand led to strong revenue growth for its cloud and networking products division, said Foxconn, whose customers include AI chip firm Nvidia. Smart consumer electronics, which includes iPhones, posted 'flattish' year-on-year revenue growth affected by exchange rates, it said. June revenue roses 10.09% on year to T$540.237 billion, a record high for that month. Foxconn said it anticipates growth in this quarter from the previous three months and from the same period last year but cautioned about potential risks to growth. "The impact of evolving global political and economic conditions and exchange rate changes will need continued close monitoring," it said without elaborating. U.S. President Donald Trump said he had signed letters to 12 countries outlining the various tariff levels they would face on goods they export to the United States, with the "take it or leave it" offers to be sent out on Monday. The Chinese city of Zhengzhou is home to the world's largest iPhone manufacturing facility, operated by Foxconn. The company, formally called Hon Hai Precision Industry, does not provide numerical forecasts. It will report full second quarter earnings on August 14. Foxconn's shares jumped 76% last year, far outperforming the 28.5% rise for the Taiwan market, but are down 12.5% so far this year, reflecting broader pressure on tech stocks rattled by Trump's tumultuous trade policy. The stock closed down 1.83% on Friday ahead of the revenue data release, compared with a 0.73% drop for the benchmark index.
