NEET-PG aspirants allotted exam centres in other States, original choices ignored: TNRDA

The Hindu4 days ago
Despite selecting three preferred cities within Tamil Nadu, many aspirants of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Post Graduate 2025 (NEET-PG), which is scheduled to be held on August 3, have been allotted examination centres in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, in complete disregard to their original choices, the Tamil Nadu Resident Doctors Association (TNRDA) has said.
In a statement issued, TNRDA expressed serious concern over the manner in which the exam centres were allotted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS).
Noting that there were widespread grievances among candidates, the association said that students who selected cities in T.N., such as Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore, were denied centres in their State and allotted to faraway cities in other States. The 'First-Come, First-Serve' basis was violated, as even early applicants were not granted preferred cities. TNRDA added that several candidates were notified only of the State, not the city, till the last moment.
The allotment process has led to heightened mental stress, especially among women and rural candidates who now face long-distance travel and safety concerns, it said.
The association noted that this was a systemic failure despite clear NBEMS guidelines. The NBEMS's notice on July 7 assured that 'more cities will be added and city selection will be first-come, first-serve' basis, and candidates will be able to see only cities where seats are available. In reality, there is a complete mismatch between policy and implementation, the association added.
TNRDA demanded an increase in the number of exam centres within each State, especially Tamil Nadu, to accommodate all local applicants and to ensure city-level allotment transparency and prevent cross-State allotment unless consented to by the candidate. It demanded to allow re-allotment or correction window for affected aspirants immediately and to publish a city-wise seat matrix to justify the allotment process. It also put forward the need to establish a dedicated grievance redressal helpline with swift resolution.
Subjecting NEET-PG candidates to chaotic logistics and mental exhaustion in the name of 'technical limitations' is unjust and unacceptable, it said. TNRDA urged the Union Health Ministry and NBEMS to act responsibly and restore fairness to the NEET-PG 2025 process.

The minister got first-hand feedback and inputs from educators and announced a plan to revamp computer labs with a Rs 400 crore investment In a unique initiative to further enhance the quality and standards of education in the state government schools, Punjab School Education Minister S Harjot Singh Bains engaged in 'Dialogue with Teachers" at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Sangrur, to get first-hand feedback and inputs from educators. While addressing the teachers, Bains highlighted the transformative strides in the state's education system, noting that the government schools are now globally recognised. He emphasised that the government's approach is centred on delivering tangible results, rather than resorting to superficial measures. The minister assured that teachers' issues would be addressed while announcing a plan to revamp computer labs with a Rs 400 crore investment and said that interactive panels are being installed in schools. He also said that a third batch of teachers would be sent abroad for training, and the selection would be based solely on merit. Additionally, the minister highlighted initiatives such as promotions for lecturers, appointments of 400 new principals, and improvements in school infrastructure, including increased access to proper seating and sanitation facilities. He further stated that education is the top priority of the Chief Minister S Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab government, while citing Punjab's emergence as a top performer in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2024, attributing it to the state government's relentless efforts. Furthermore, the Education Minister stated that an impressive 845 government school students passed the highly competitive National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), while 265 students successfully cleared the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains this year, which showcases the school education department's commitment to fostering academic excellence and empowering students to excel in the country's most challenging competitive exams. These remarkable accomplishments showcase the Punjab government's dedication to ensuring quality education and improving student learning outcomes, he said. While congratulating the teachers for transforming education, Bains said that the state government has launched the School of Eminence, School of Happiness, and School of Brilliance schemes to uplift the education system and shape the future of students in government schools. He also highlighted a groundbreaking initiative under the Aam Aadmi Party government, where teachers are being trained in esteemed international institutions in Singapore, Finland, and Ahmedabad to modernise the state's education system. He described the Dialogue with Teachers initiative as a pioneering platform where the administration actively listens to and values teachers' insights, fostering a collaborative approach to education reform. NEET aspirants seek more exam centres in state

T'puram: A majority of state's 20,000 aspirants, who registered for NEET PG 2025 examination, scheduled for Aug 3, got examination centres in far away places in other states. Only 13 examination centres were allotted for Kerala and these were filled within one hour of beginning the registration process on National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) portal. The centres were allotted through the portal on a first-come, first-served basis. As a result, many candidates who didn't secure centres in Kerala got centres in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Although many attempted to opt for centres in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, they were unsuccessful as those centres also filled up quickly. Indian Medical Association-Junior Doctors Network (IMA-JDN) has urged Union health minister to allot more examination centres either in the home state or in neighbouring cities. "We approached Centre a week ago, but there has been no favourable response yet from them," said Dr Sreejith N Kumar, national chairman of the network. The demand of aspirants taking the exam is that Union govt either increase number of seats at examination centres in Kerala or increase the number of examination centres. "We approached MPs from Kerala to exert pressure on Centre. While some students received centres in neighbouring cities, many others are being forced to undertake long, expensive and stressful journeys to unfamiliar destinations," said Dr Sreejith. tnn

Anticipatory bail plea in NEET marks scam rejected

Mumbai: Observing that accusations of manipulating NEET exam marks to secure admission to government colleges would have a "direct impact on students whose careers are at stake" and the "huge amount" involved and the "prima facie case of involvement" of the accused, a special court last week rejected anticipatory bail plea of Rajiv Sinha, in connection with a scandal involving manipulation of NEET 2025 exam marks. Sinha (36), currently in Thailand, had sought pre-arrest bail through his wife, Shatabdi Sinha. The court vacated the ad-interim relief previously granted to him on July 8. The anticipatory bail plea was filed mainly on grounds that the accused is innocent and falsely implicated in the case. There are no allegations that he has received or demanded money, the plea said. It was submitted that maximum punishment in the offence is 7 years jail, custodial interrogation is not required.
