'Slow Food' calls for European Union (EU) agrifood trade overhaul; urges shift to agroecology, fair farmer incomes & shorter supply chains

Time of India19-06-2025
BATHINDA: Slow Food, a global movement of farmers united by the goal of ensuring everyone has access to good, clean, and fair food, has called for a bold shift in European Union (EU) trade policy.
The organisation is advocating for policies that support agroecology and fair farmer incomes through a reformed Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), along with:
Environmental and social production standards on imported food through "
mirror measures
".
Shorter, fairer supply chains that empower local producers and communities.
Food sovereignty
and agrobiodiversity rooted in food cultures and inclusive governance.
As global food prices remain volatile and supply chains face increasing disruptions, Slow Food released a new policy brief on Wednesday, urging the EU to rethink its approach to food trade. The brief, titled 'What's the Deal? Making EU Agrifood Trade Work for Better Food Systems', explores how the current global trade model—based on deregulated markets, export-led agriculture, and corporate consolidation—is undermining the shift towards fairer and more resilient food systems, both in Europe and worldwide.
As a major global trading power, the EU plays a significant role in sustaining this flawed system. Its current agrifood trade policies are seen as hindering progress towards more diverse, equitable, and sustainable food systems, at home and abroad. The trade tensions of 2025, triggered by US tariff threats, highlighted the fragility of the global food system—one so unstable that the actions of a single government could push millions into hunger and poverty.
However, crises can also bring new opportunities.
'The fragile state of global food prices and supply chains is a direct result of a broken trade system. The EU must use this moment to shift towards agroecological, localised, and socially just food systems,' said Marta Messa, Slow Food Secretary General.
'Europe must stop outsourcing the true cost of its consumption. We need a trade policy that nourishes people—not just corporate profits.'
The policy brief begins by examining the failures of the current food trade system, rooted in colonial exploitation, deregulation, and the rise of powerful corporations. It identifies the causes of the crisis, including the industrialisation of agriculture, market liberalisation, and treating food as a simple commodity.
In response, Slow Food presents an alternative vision, grounded in agroecology, food sovereignty, and the relocalisation of food systems. It proposes three key reforms:
Enforcing mirror measures so all imported goods meet EU environmental and social standards.
Supporting a shift away from industrial animal farming towards agriculture that ensures better animal welfare.
Strengthening corporate accountability and promoting local food democracy to transfer power back to communities.

The Commission proposed a fundamental redesign of the EU budget, which will be more streamlined, flexible and impactful. It will significantly enhance the EU's capacity to deliver on core policies while addressing new and emerging priorities, an official release said. The budget will continue to support people, business, member states, regions, partners and the EU's collective future, it noted. The Commission has also proposed new own resources and adjustments to existing ones, which will ease pressure on national budgets, generating €58.5 billion per year. Key features of the new MFF include simpler, more streamlined and harmonised EU financial programmes, so that citizens and companies can easily find and access funding opportunities. The MFF will offer a powerful competitiveness boost for Europe to secure supply chains, scale-up innovation and lead the global race for clean and smart technology. Transparency on and screening of the beneficiaries of the EU budget will be reinforced. Information on the recipients of EU funds will be published in a centralised database. Stepping up investment in skills is fundamental to help EU students and workers embrace opportunities. A reinforced Erasmus+ programme will be the backbone of the Union of Skills, which aims at building skills for quality jobs, upskilling and reskilling. Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport. A new European Competitiveness Fund, worth €409 billion, will invest in strategic technologies to benefit the entire single market. It will focus its support on four areas: clean transition and decarbonisation; digital transition; health, biotech, agriculture and bioeconomy; defence and space. To simplify external action financing, a Global Europe, worth €200 billion for 2028-2034 will maximise impact on the ground and improve visibility of EU external action in partner countries. EU-India ties seen as safe investment amid weaponisation of trade, tech: EU envoy

The European Union-India relationship is on a firm upward trajectory and has emerged as a "safe investment" at a time when global dynamics around trade, technology, migration, and information are increasingly being "weaponised," EU Ambassador to India Herve Delphin said on at an event hosted by the Ananta Centre, Delphin described the recent visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the EU College of Commissioners to India as a "historic" and symbolic show of "confidence and trust" in the EU-India free trade agreement (FTA), which both sides aim to conclude by the end of 2025, could serve as a 'turbocharger' for economic cooperation, the envoy said. While acknowledging the complexities involved, Delphin stated, "There is a clear statement on both sides that not a single issue will block the whole lot. We will go ahead," He emphasised that both the EU and India are committed to a rules-based global order and share growing intersections of economic, political, and security interests. 'This partnership has grown organically,' he said, 'and when you see how trade, technology, migration, and energy are being weaponised, we represent for each other a safe investment.'Delphin also framed the EU as a 'collective force' navigating a turbulent global environment. He noted that major powers like Russia, China, and the U.S. pay close attention to the EU, often critically, which, he said, 'probably means that we matter.'Describing the EU's evolving posture, Delphin referred to what he called the "rearmament" of the bloc—military, economic, and societal. 'We have fundamentally changed our DNA,' he said. 'We remain an open and democratic society, but we don't want that openness turned into a vulnerability.'Referring to recent geopolitical events including Brexit and shifting US-EU relations under former President Trump, Delphin said the EU has managed to navigate a "series of crises" and is now 'readying itself for the new normal.'On the global stage, he noted that the EU and India are increasingly acting as 'bridgeheads' for broad coalitions, advocating democratic values, human-centric development, and resilience in the face of coercive tactics.'We both reject wars of aggression, global terrorism, and economic coercion,' Delphin said. 'As large democracies, we attach central importance to human values.'He also cited von der Leyen's words during her India visit, calling the EU-India relationship a 'consequential partnership' not only for both parties but for the wider world. 'We both stand to benefit,' Delphin said, 'and perhaps this is the time to truly deliver.'- Ends(With inputs from PTI)Must Watch
