Revealed: The moment AFL umpire's world crashed down before he tried to take his own life

Daily Mail4 days ago
About five years after retiring from AFL umpiring, Troy Pannell's life began to implode.
He had been working in the shipping industry, alongside his 16-year referee career, until he was suspended in June 2024 pending a fraud investigation.
Pannell lost another job of 16 years and had his assets frozen due to the SeaRoad Shipping fraud probe.
Realising he could no longer provide for his two children, Pannell's lawyer on Wednesday said his mental health 'really began to decline'.
'He was under a lot of stress,' defence lawyer Jessica Clarebrough told Heidelberg Magistrates Court.
'He was being investigated. He had his assets frozen. He felt he was unable to provide, he'd lost his job of 16 years, and he was very concerned about the impact on his ex-partner, his partner, his parents and his two children.'
Pannell (pictured) had warrants issued for his arrest when he failed to attend a Supreme Court hearing and refused to stop when he was pulled over by police on two occasions
Media caught onto the fraud investigation after he failed to turn up to the Supreme Court over the asset freezing, and warrants were issued for his arrest.
Pannell sent letters to his family, before embarking on a solo road trip to places in South Australia, NSW and Victoria he remembered from childhood.
Ms Clareborough said he then attempted to take his own life.
He was pulled over twice by police but failed to stop, on May 30, and then evaded police on June 6, before crashing his van.
Ms Clareborough said her client was 'panicking' as he knew there was a warrant out for his arrest.
Pannell appeared at the court on Wednesday via video link from Melbourne Remand Centre.
Ms Clareborough said he had been in custody for 48 days, for both the Supreme Court matter and these charges.
He pleaded guilty to three offences, including dealing with property suspected to be the proceeds of crime, failure to stop on police direction and evade police.
The property offences related to a vehicle, phone and laptop Pannell had not given back to his new employer, Demos Property Services.
Magistrate Michael Wighton said the charges were not serious enough to warrant a prison term.
He handed Pannell a six-month good behaviour bond, cancelled his driver's licence and disqualified him from driving for six months.
Pannell will return to the magistrates court on January 23, 2026, and his charges will then be dismissed if he has been of good behaviour.
Separately, he has pleaded guilty to contempt of court in the Supreme Court, and is fighting fraud allegations from SeaRoad over payments he made while working there.
He will return to the Supreme Court on Friday for a sentence on the contempt charges.
The experienced umpire, who presided over more than 200 AFL games, attracted attention after he awarded 17 free kicks to the Western Bulldogs in a 2016 match against the Adelaide Crows.
In May 2014, Pannell was left with a concussion and had to be taken from the ground on a stretcher after he was accidentally struck in the head by Sydney defender Nick Malceski.
He retired from professional umpiring in 2019 due to soft-tissue issues.

Two found dead in Arkansas state park in ‘suspected homicide', police say

Two people were found dead along a walking trail in a state park in Arkansas, authorities said on Sunday. A 43-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman were found dead at Devil's Den state park in Washington county, according to the Arkansas state police. Its criminal investigation unit is handling what it calls a 'suspected homicide'. The suspect is a white male wearing dark shorts, a dark tank top and weight-lifting type gloves. He was seen driving toward a park exit in a black, four-door sedan whose license plate may have been covered by electrical or duct tape. The vehicle may have been traveling on State Highway 170 or State Highway 220 near the park, police said. The victims' bodies were being taken to the Arkansas state crime lab, where the manner and cause of death will be determined.

Suspected robber's arrest leads police to find woman's body in house - and officers fear two others 'may have come to harm'

A murder investigation has been launched after the arrest of a suspected armed robber led officers to find the body of a young woman inside a house. Officers are also trying to trace a man and woman they believe "may have come to harm" in relation to the case, West Yorkshire Police said. The force had arrested the 37-year-old suspect after they received reports of an armed robbery at an Asda in Dewsbury, at 9.21pm on Saturday. Officers attended, arrested the man and seized a knife, the force said. Following the arrest, the armed robbery suspect told officers about a woman who he believed to be dead inside a property on Norfolk Street in Batley. Officers attended the address and found the body of a woman in her 20s. A spokesperson for the force said formal identification is yet to take place. The armed robbery suspect was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder. Officers are searching the Dewsbury area for the two other people they believe may have come to harm, with police present in the town centre, near to the River Calder and in Westtown. The force is appealing to anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage to come forward. Detective Chief Inspector Dan Bates, of the homicide and major enquiry team, said: "This is clearly a very serious incident, where a young woman has lost her life. "There is a heightened police presence in Dewsbury today as we work to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident. "Our immediate priority is to identify and locate the two people and establish whether or not they have come to any harm. "A murder investigation is also under way and we do not believe there is any wider risk to the public at this time. "We recognise this inquiry will cause concern in the community; we are working closely with our colleagues in the local neighbourhood policing team, who have stepped up patrols in the town centre."

Marcus Morris Sr's brother and agent slam NBA star's 'insane' arrest 'real' reasons he was detained

The twin brother of NBA free agent Marcus Morris Sr. and the player's agent are disputing the reason for his shocking arrest in Florida on Sunday. Morris was arrested at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. According to arrest records in Broward County, Morris is being held on a charge of Fraud - Writing a Check With Insufficient Funds. But hours after the arrest, Morris' brother Markieff posted an angry statement on X, formerly Twitter: 'The wording is crazy. Damn for that amount of money they'll embarrass you in the airport with your family,' the post read. 'They could have came to the crib for all that. 'When y'all hear the real story on this s**t man. All I can say is Lesson learned. Bro will tell y'all tomorrow. This weird shit gave me a headache. Can't stop nothin!' Nearly half an hour later, Yony Noy - who represents both brothers - posted a statement of his own: 'Just so everyone understands this is zero fraud here or whatever crap outlets have said regarding fake checks or whatever the hell. This is due to an outstanding marker with a casino. Apparently if you have over $1,200 they can issue a warrant for your arrest. Absolute insanity!' A source told Daily Mail that the casino in question is in Las Vegas. According to the websites of multiple law firms, in the state of Nevada, an unpaid marker is treated as the equivalent of writing a bad check. Failing to pay a marker is treated as a class D felony and carries a penalty of fines and up to four years in prison. The Broward County Sheriff's Office did not immediately return a request for comment from Marcus has had a 13-year NBA career, beginning when the Houston Rockets selected him 14th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. He would go on to play for the Rockets, the Phoenix Suns, the Detroit Pistons, the Boston Celtics, the New York Knicks, and the Los Angeles Clippers. Most recently, he played the 2023-24 season with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. This incident is not Marcus' first run-in with the law. In 2012, he was arrested in Lawrence, Kansas on a battery charge after he and another person punched a bar employee while watching a Kansas-Missouri basketball game. Marcus entered a diversion agreement, paid a $300 diversion fee, and $60 in court fees. He also agreed to not come in contact with the victim or the bar for one year. At the time the diversion agreement was made, the prosecutor said that the case would be dismissed if Morris fulfilled the terms and remained 'out of trouble' during the 12 month period. Three years later, Marcus, Markeiff, Baltimore Ravens safety Gerald Bowman, and two other assailants were arrested in connection with the assault of 36-year-old Eric Hood in Arizona. Both Marcus and Markeiff were playing on the Phoenix Suns at the time. Hood, who had mentored the Morris twins, was allegedly 'sending an inappropriate text message' to the twins' mother. After a trial, the twins and Bowman were found not guilty while the other two assailants confessed.
