TNB dip seen as buying chance on strong long-term outlook

The Star2 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Any short-term share price weakness in Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is seen as a buying opportunity for long-term investors, according to Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research.
The utility giant dropped 58 sen, or 3.97%, to RM14.02 at 10.26 am, though it has gained 0.43% over the past month.
Despite the dip, HLIB Research views this weakness as an opportunity to capitalise on the company's prospects.
The Federal Court today allowed the Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) appeal to reinstate an additional tax assessment of RM1.25bil against Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) for the 2018 assessment year, following a penalty remission from the original RM1.8bil notice.
'This decision has a potential negative financial impact on the earnings and net assets of the company and group for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025. However, the decision is not expected to have any operational impact on the company and group,' TNB said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.
Despite this, HLIB Research remains unconcerned about the potential one-off tax provision.
'We remain confident that TNB will reach a constructive resolution with all relevant stakeholders (particularly IRB) to minimise impact on its balance sheet and cash flow while asserting its entitlement to Investment Tax Allowance (ITA).
'Subsequently, TNB will proceed with the formal ITA application process to determine the final eligible amount, which will be resolved in due course, resulting neutral impact over the longer term,' it said.
HLIB Research has maintained a 'buy' call on TNB with an unchanged target price of RM16.20.
'Looking ahead, we expect Tenaga to benefit from a higher Regulated Asset Base starting in 2025 under RP4-RP5 (2025-2030), as well as new tenders for gas power plants and renewable energy projects.
'We view any short-term share price weakness as a buying opportunity for long-term investors,' it said.
Meanwhile, TA Securities stated that they understand no provisions have been made for the disputed amount, given TNB's success in the case at multiple levels previously.
'As such, in the worst case that TNB provides for the RM1.25bil claim by the IRB, we estimate a -27% one-off hit to FY25F earnings and a -2% impact on net assets. However, we believe any decision to provide for the amount hinges on the progress made with IRB on TNB's Schedule 7B IA claim,' it said.
TA has maintained its "buy" call and target price of RM17.30.
'While this could be a one-off setback, albeit a sizeable one, it does not derail our structural thesis of an expansion in TNB's regulated asset base from an increase in grid capex to accommodate the energy transition.
'We note the sharp -2% (or -30sen) share price correction yesterday, which we believe may have more than reflected the potential RM1.25bil provision (which is equivalent to 21 sen per share),' it added.

E-invoicing Phase 3 begins for businesses earning RM5mil–RM25mil [BTTV]

CYBERJAYA: The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) is accelerating its digital tax compliance drive with the rollout of Phase 3 of e-invoicing today, a move set to impact around 55,000 businesses earning between RM5 million and RM25 million annually. IRB Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Tax Operations) Shaharrudy Othman said the agency is committed to providing continuous support to taxpayers, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), through various promotional and educational programmes. "IRB is actively stepping up efforts to educate and raise awareness among target groups to ensure that the e-Invoice implementation is comprehensive and effective," he said at the launch ceremony and media conference on the implementation of e-Invoice for Phase 3 held here today. Shaharrudy said a total of 352 million e-invoices have been submitted via the MyInvois system to date. "This involves over 37,800 taxpayers, including about 5,400 taxpayers from Phase 1 and more than 13,000 taxpayers from Phase 2. "Furthermore, over 19,000 taxpayers have voluntarily adopted e-invoicing ahead of their scheduled implementation dates," he said. Last month, IRB announced that Phase 4 of the e-invoice implementation for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM1 million and RM5 million has been postponed to Jan 1, 2026. Phase 5, involving the income group of up to RM1 million, will commence on July 1, 2026. Meanwhile, taxpayers with an annual income or sales below RM500,000 are exempted from the initiative. Shaharrudy added that the grace period for the implementation of e-invoicing for Phase 2, involving businesses with an annual revenue between RM25 million and RM100 million, had ended on June 3, and taxpayers must now fully comply with the guidelines. "To ensure ongoing support for MSMEs who are starting their e-invoicing implementation from today, IRB has increased the number of briefing sessions and expanded the use of the MyInvois Portal nationwide. "IRB has also created a dedicated e-invoicing microsite on the agency's official portal and is using various communication channels to disseminate relevant information," he said. Shaharrudy said the agency will continue to enhance communication across businesses, tax practitioners, professional bodies and stakeholders to raise awareness and improve their understanding of the benefits of e-invoicing implementation. "To facilitate a smooth implementation, we have also set up dedicated service counters nationwide to assist taxpayers in understanding the use of the MyInvois Portal, MyInvois application and the free-to-use MyInvois e-Pos system," he said. IRB also launched the MyInvois e-Pos system, which is designed for MSMEs with annual income or sales of under RM750,000. Shaharrudy said the system simplifies the implementation of e-invoicing by integrating core business functions such as sales recording, inventory management, financial reporting and e-invoice support. He added that the system also aims to help MSMEs enhance business operational efficiency while facilitating the smooth implementation of e-invoicing.

TNB facing RM5 billion tax bill after Federal Court ruling

Published on: Friday, July 04, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 04, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: On Wednesday, the Federal Court ruled that TNB is a utility company, and not a manufacturing concern eligible to claim reinvestment allowance. PETALING JAYA: National utility company Tenaga Nasional Bhd is facing a RM5.05 billion tax bill following a Federal Court rulIng that it is not eligible to claim reinvestment allowance. Citing TNB's 2024 annual report, The Edge reported today that the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) issued the company RM9.25 billion in additional tax assessments. Advertisement However, RM2.44 billion in penalties was waived through settlements. 'TNB paid RM1.76 billion in December 2020, leaving an estimated RM5.05 billion still outstanding,' the report by the financial portal added. Yesterday, it was reported that TNB's shares plunged a day after the Federal Court overturned a ruling in the largest corporate tax dispute in the country's history, resulting in losses of over RM3 billion in its market capitalisation. Its shares fell as much as 74 sen, or over 5%, to its lowest level since June 3, with the counter closing at RM14.02. On Wednesday the apex court overturned a Court of Appeal ruling that found the national utility company to be in the business of manufacturing electricity. It said TNB should actually have been considered a utility company under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967 (ITA). The dispute arose when LHDN disallowed TNB's claim under Schedule 7A of the ITA on the basis that the generation, distribution and transmission of electricity did not constitute manufacturing of electricity. TNB had also argued that it was only a service provider. In 2022, the High Court allowed TNB's judicial review application to set aside LHDN's RM1.8 billion tax assessment for the year 2018. Two years later, the Court of Appeal upheld the High Court's ruling. TNB has already paid the sum. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MN Holdings wins RM29mil TNB contract for Johor substation project

KUALA LUMPUR: MN Holdings Bhd's unit, MN Power Transmission Sdn Bhd, has secured a RM29.3 million contract from Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) for a substation expansion project in Johor. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company said it received the letter of award from TNB yesterday for the extension of two new 132-kilovolt transformer bays at the existing main intake substation in the Tanjung Langsat Industrial Estate. The project involves supplying, installing and commissioning the high-voltage transformer units using air-insulated switchgear technology, together with all associated civil works and secondary electrical systems. The contract, which excludes Sales and Service Tax, is scheduled to be completed within 540 days from the commencement date. MN Power Transmission is also required to furnish a performance security of RM1.47 million, equivalent to five per cent of the contract value, within 56 days of the award. Additionally, the company must procure all necessary insurance coverage, including construction all-risks, workmen's compensation, public liability and other relevant policies. "This project award reflects MN's ongoing capability and expertise in delivering power infrastructure solutions," the company said, adding that the contract is expected to contribute positively to the group's future earnings and net assets.
