'Cursed' ghost town theme park in the hills lies abandoned with chilling explanation
The once-bustling amusement park is now an eerie bastion of faded splendour
It drew visitors from far and wide with its unique attractions
A chillingly abandoned "ghost town in the sky", which captivated crowds in its heyday, now lies deserted amid the hills of North Carolina, having succumbed to financial woes over ten years ago.
Left to decay under the mercy of the weather, the Old West-inspired amusement park, previously a magnet for movie stars and stunt performers, now languishes as a haunting reminder of former grandeur. Yet, there might be a glimmer of hope for its revival.

One particularly daunting rollercoaster rises above desolate saloons at Buck Mountain's summit, at an impressive elevation of 4,650 feet. Local travel outlet Blue Ridge Mountain Life noted that some have dubbed Ghost Town Village as a "cursed amusement park."

The concept of the attraction originally came about when the land was purchased from a townsman known as Uncle Dan Carpenter back in 1960. The narrative has it that R.B. Coburn stumbled upon the tale of Carpenter's sheep being lost in a vast cave on Buck Mountain, as reported by The Sun, reports the Mirror US.

Coburn, intrigued, sought out Carpenter who then revealed the location where his sheep had gone missing, sparking the vision for the park. Inspired by his experiences in the ghost towns of the Midwest, Coburn envisaged transforming this site into a time capsule for visitors.

The construction of the park was a Herculean task that saw the concerted effort of more than two hundred locals come together to erect about 40 constructions at the pinnacle of the mountain to comprise the ethereal township.
Approximately 120,000 square feet of construction emerged, utilising 91,000 metres of lumber, 60,000 metres of plywood, and a staggering 9,000 kg of nails. The park threw open its gates in 1961, rapidly establishing itself as a premier destination in Western North Carolina and becoming a hub for TV western stars from series like Laramie and Wagon Train to shoot their scenes.
Audiences were particularly captivated by the staged gunfights that took place hourly on the main street, with the unique selling point being the rides darting in and out of the mountain's flanks.

One rollercoaster was called the Red Devil

However, over time, the attraction began to deteriorate, leading to a decline in visitor numbers, akin to falling off a cliff. The park was further beset by infrastructural woes, including issues with water, power and sewage systems.
Workers also started airing their concerns regarding unpaid wages, culminating in the park ceasing operations after the 2009 season.

Yet, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon according to the National Amusement Park Historical Association. Despite being dubbed the "cursed amusement park" by Blue Ridge Mountain Life, owing to numerous failed attempts at revival, salvation may be at hand.
On May 9, a post on NAPHA's Facebook page disclosed that an interested party from Florida is considering the purchase of the now-defunct theme park.
That very post also indicated that the proprietor, Jill McClure, is keen to sell it for use as an entertainment venue rather than to interests with different intentions.

However, the site has reportedly been earmarked for a housing development instead. The new owner reportedly intends to revamp the area into "a venue featuring country music, rodeos, and festivals, aiming to keep the park family-friendly."

Joe Sugg refers to Strictly's Dianne Buswell as ‘my wife' before she asks awkward question

More info Joe Sugg once referred to Dianne Buswell as "my wife", before she quizzed him on whether he had an engagement ring in his pocket. The YouTube sensation opened up about his relationship with the Australian dancer on the In Sickness and in Health podcast, hosted by James and Clair Buckley, recalling their first meeting on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. Their love story began on the 16th series of Strictly, with the couple confirming their relationship on Instagram shortly after the Grand Final, where they competed, but narrowly missed out on the trophy to Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton. Over the course of the show, Dianne ended her relationship with her then-partner, Emmerdale's Anthony Quinlan. However, after the series concluded, Joe expressed that although he didn't win the glitterball trophy, he had "won something a million times more special". Since then, the famous pair have taken their relationship to the next level, moving in together and purchasing their first home in February 2021. Fans are eagerly awaiting news of an engagement. (Image: Getty Images for BAFTA) Reflecting on their initial meeting on the popular BBC dance show during a joint appearance on the podcast last year, Joe opened up about his experience on the genealogy programme, 'Who Do You Think You Are?'. He found it "nice" to learn about how his grandparents and great-grandparents met, leading him to draw parallels between traditional courtship methods and his own romance with Dianne. He went on: "Back in the old days, it was all through like dances, and they'd get up and go, 'May I have this dance?' That kind of thing. So like, technically, I can say I met erm.." At that point, someone interjected to clarify if he was referring to his wife, prompting him to correct this by saying "partner". Concurrently, Dianne couldn't help but join in, exclaiming: "Oh, you're dead! Have you got a ring in your pocket now?". Joe carried on: "In the future, it will be like, 'Oh, I met my wife through dancing, technically, and you can watch the moment we met'. It's gonna be really weird. You can like watch the moment that we met, I guess, on camera'." (Image: BAFTA via Getty Images) Dianne has not been shy about dropping significant hints about getting engaged to Joe, previously making a similar remark during her own podcast. On an instalment of Winning Isn't Everything, which she co-hosts with fellow Strictly sensation Chris McCausland, she gestured to her ring finger asking: "What's that one, your best friend finger?". With a touch of humour, Chris quipped that it's the digit "Joe's done nothing with". Dianne agreed, noting "exactly" and the necessity to remind Joe "what that finger holds". She concluded by expressing: "That finger is feeling very lonely, it needs something to weigh it down with." You can catch Joe's appearance on The Chase Celebrity Special on ITV on Sunday, July 13, from 5.40pm to 6.30pm.

Major motorway closed as all traffic held near Stansted Airport after vehicle fire and spillage

A MAJOR motorway has been forced to close with all traffic stopped near Stansted Airport after a car fire and spillage. The blaze, which unfolded near the major airport, has caused the M11 in Essex to be shut as traffic being eld in both directions. 2 2 Those caught between junctions eight and nine will face severe delays with all lanes shut on both sides. The vehicle set alight between junction eight with the A120, Bishop's Stortford and Stansted Airport, and junction nine with Saffron Walden. It comes after a fuel spillage on the M11 southbound with traffic being diverted onto the A120. It's unsure when the lanes will reopen and congestion continues to build. Queues could last up to an hour on approach to the airport, a National Highways spokesperson revealed, and drivers have been warned to plan ahead.
