US lawmaker demands more answers on Microsoft's China-based tech support for Pentagon

. According to a report, Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) has sent a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, requesting detailed information on the extent of access Chinese engineers had to US military data.
Citing his letter, news agency Reuters, Cotton specifically asked Hegseth to provide details on three fronts.
Provide lawmakers with details on what information Chinese engineers accessed.
Disclose any 'potential security incidents or malicious events that have already occurred or are likely to occur.'
Confirm whether Microsoft was required to conduct self-audits of the program and, if so, to release the results of those audits.

Senator Cotton's inquiry follows a report by ProPublica, which revealed Microsoft's practice of using China-based engineers, supervised by US "digital escorts," to provide technical support for US military operations.
Following the ProPublica report, Hegseth ordered a two-week review across the department to ensure that other contractors are not engaging in similar practices that could pose security risks.
Last week, Microsoft announced it has ceased this practice.

‘Online cracker sale led to 40 per cent drop in business last year'
VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Federation of Tamil Nadu Fireworks Traders on Tuesday claimed that the revenue from the sale of firecrackers dropped 40% last year, primarily due to the alleged rise in online sales of crackers, despite a Supreme Court ban on the same. The federation also said the illegal import of Chinese firecrackers, allegedly going on for five years, has led to a 20-30% drop in domestic production. Speaking to reporters in Sivakasi, president of the federation V Raja Chandrasekar warned legal action against those engaged in the unauthorised sale of firecrackers online. "Last year, the firecracker business in the state faced a loss of Rs 400-500 crore, while nationwide losses due to the online sales were estimated to be up to Rs 1,000 crore. States such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka were among the worst affected," he said. With only three months remaining for the Deepavali season, Chandrasekar urged the state government to issue licenses for permanent firecracker outlets immediately. He stressed the need to issue temporary shop licenses at least 30 days prior to the festival, allowing for 15 days of sales. "The current practice of last-minute approvals is causing serious challenges for traders in stocking and sales," he added. Further, he appealed to the government to extend the validity of no-objection certificates (NOCs) obtained from the fire department from one year to five years for permanent cracker shops to "ease the regulatory burden on traders". Citing a recent incident in Mumbai, where 10 containers of Chinese firecrackers were seized, the association urged the union government to take strict action to prevent such imports and safeguard the domestic fireworks industry. Blast at cracker unit, none injured Virudhunagar: A minor explosion occurred at a PESO-licensed firecracker manufacturing unit near Vachakkarapatti on Tuesday. One room of the unit was damaged in the accident, and no injuries or casualties were reported. An investigation is underway.

Delhi HC upholds conviction of activist Medha Patkar in defamation case filed by Delhi LG VK Saxena
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday upheld the conviction of activist Medha Patkar in a 24-year-old defamation case filed by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, Live Law reported. Justice Shalinder Kaur said that there was no illegality in the decisions taken by the trial court and the appellate court to convict the Narmada Bachao Andolan leader in the case, adding that the orders were passed after consideration of evidence and law. The High Court was hearing a petition filed by Patkar against the trial court's April verdict dismissing her appeal against her conviction in the case. She had also challenged the order directing her to appear in person before the trial court to make submissions on the sentencing. Patkar failed to demonstrate any defects in the procedure that was followed or any error in the law that resulted in the alleged miscarriage of justice, Kaur said on Tuesday. The bench further upheld the decision taken by the appellate court to release Patkar on probation, Bar and Bench reported. However, the High Court modified the probation condition requiring her to appear before the trial court every three months. The activist can now appear online or be represented by an advocate. 'All the other conditions do not require any interference by this court,' Kaur said. The bench also dismissed another petition filed by the activist against the dismissal of her application to introduce and examine an additional witness in the defamation case, Live Law reported. The case was filed in 2001, when Saxena was heading the Ahmedabad-based non-governmental organisation National Council for Civil Liberties. Saxena alleged that Patkar had defamed him in a press note titled 'True face of patriot', which the activist had issued on November 25, 2000. The case, filed in an Ahmedabad court, was transferred to the chief metropolitan magistrate's court in Delhi in 2003. Patkar pleaded not guilty to the charges in 2013. In May 2024, Metropolitan Magistrate Raghav Sharma convicted Patkar in the case. She was found guilty of criminal defamation and held liable to serve two years' jail time, pay a fine, or both. On April 2, Additional Sessions Judge Vishal Singh upheld the verdict convicting Patkar. On April 8, Singh granted Patkar one year's probation in the case, noting that the offence she had committed was not grave enough to warrant imprisonment. However, Patkar had been expected to appear before the court on April 23, furnish probation bonds and deposit a fine of Rs 1 lakh. As the activist did not appear in court or comply with other orders, Singh said that Patkar was deliberately violating the directions and issued a non-bailable warrant. On April 25, Patkar was arrested but released hours later from custody. Her release came after her counsel told the court that the probation order was still valid and that the activist would furnish the probation bonds. The activist had moved the High Court against her conviction. The May 2024 judgement had said that Patkar's press note was a direct attack on Saxena's personal character and loyalty to the nation. The court also observed that Patkar had accused Saxena of 'mortgaging the people of Gujarat and their resources to foreign interests' and held the allegation to be a 'direct attack' on his integrity and public service. 'Such allegations are particularly grave in the public sphere, where patriotism is highly valued, and questioning someone's courage and national loyalty can cause irreversible damage to their public image and social standing,' the court had said.

Value buying lifts key indices
Mumbai: Snapping the three-day losing run, benchmark BSE Sensex rebounded by nearly 447 points on Tuesday following value buying in blue-chip Reliance Industries and financial shares. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 446.93 points or 0.55 per cent to settle at 81,337.95. During the day, it surged 538.86 points or 0.66 per cent to 81,429.88. The 50-share NSE Nifty climbed 140.20 points or 0.57 per cent to 24,821.10. Among Sensex firms, Reliance Industries rose the most by 2.21 per cent. Gains in HDFC Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel and Tata Motors also aided the rally. Asian Paints, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, Maruti and Bajaj Finance were also among the gainers. However, Axis Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, Titan and ITC were among the laggards. 'Amidst lingering uncertainties over the ongoing US-India trade negotiations, the domestic equity market staged a modest recovery from intra-day lows. Investor sentiment remains cautious ahead of key global events, including policy decisions from the US Fed and the August 1 reciprocal tariff deadline. 'Sustenance of this rally is likely to be positive in the near term with an eye on the above details, including Q1 results and this week's monthly expiry,' Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said. The BSE smallcap gauge jumped 1.10 per cent and midcap rallied 0.84 per cent. All BSE sectoral indices ended higher. Realty surged the most by 1.64 per cent, followed by telecommunication (1.50 per cent), energy (1.22 per cent), industrials (1.20 per cent), healthcare (1.15 per cent), commodities (1.05 per cent) and auto (0.92 per cent). As many as 2,486 stocks advanced while 1,515 declined and 154 remained unchanged on the BSE. 'Indian equities rebounded sharply on Tuesday, breaking a three-day losing streak as value buying and easing volatility lifted sentiment,' Gaurav Garg, Lemonn Markets Desk, said. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 6,082.47 crore on Monday, according to exchange data. The recovery in the Nifty was driven by oversold positions in heavyweight stocks, coupled with the presence of strong support at the 100-day EMA, Ajit Mishra - SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said.
