Oil prices little changed as investors look ahead to OPEC+ meeting

Reuters9 hours ago
SINGAPORE, July 2 (Reuters) - Oil futures were little changed on Wednesday as investors are wary ahead of a meeting of major producers this week to determine output levels for August.
Brent crude was up 1 cent at $67.12 a barrel at 0124 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 5 cents to $65.40 a barrel.
Demand expectations received a boost on Tuesday after a private-sector survey showed factory activity expanded in June in China, the world's biggest oil importer, analysts said.
Since Iran and Israel have halted attacks on each other following their 12-day conflict, Brent has traded between a high of $69.04 a barrel and low of $66.34 since June 25, as concerns of supply disruptions in the Middle East producing region have ebbed.
"Oil prices seem to be in a tight range as we've seen a reduction in geopolitical risk and nerves about what OPEC may do in regards to raising production," said Phil Flynn, senior analyst with the Price Futures Group.
Price have been kept in check by expectations that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies including Russia, know as OPEC+, will boost its August crude oil output by an amount similar to the outsized hikes agreed in May, June, and July.
Four OPEC+ sources told Reuters last week the group plans to raise output by 411,000 barrels per day next month when it meets on July 6.
The market is already seeing the results of the previous OPEC+ increases with Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, lifting shipments in June by 450,000 bpd from May, according to data from Kpler, its highest in more than a year.
In the U.S., crude oil inventories rose by 680,000 barrels in the past week, according to sources citing figures from the American Petroleum Institute. Official data from the Energy Information Administration is due Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. ET.
U.S. non-farm payrolls data due on Thursday will shape expectations around the depth and timing of interest rate cuts by the federal reserve in the second half of this year, said Tony Sycamore, analyst at IG.
Lower interest rates could spur economic activity which would in turn boost oil demand.
Investors are also watching trade negotiations ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff deadline of July 9. Trump on Tuesday said he is not thinking of extending the deadline.

ABB expands robot line-up for China to tap mid-sized customers

ZURICH, July 2 (Reuters) - ABB (ABBN.S), opens new tab is launching three new families of factory robots designed specially for China, the Swiss engineering company said on Wednesday, as it aims to benefit from rising demand for automation among mid-sized companies. The machines will work in sectors like electronics, food and beverage, and metals, handling tasks like polishing and placing products around production lines, the Zurich-based company said. Sales in China's so-called mid-market section — where robots perform less complex tasks, such as pick-and-place operations, packaging, or basic inspection — are expected to grow at 8% per year over the next three years when measured by value, ABB said, much faster than the global industry in recent years. China's mid-market robotics segment has been increasing its levels of automation to tackle labour shortages and as the technology becomes easier to operate. "With artificial intelligence, the robots are easier to use and therefore more appealing to customers who did not have them in the past," Sami Atiya, president of ABB's robotics & discrete automation business area, said. ABB's new family of robots includes the Lite+, PoWa and IRB1200 robots, whose arms can carry different load sizes and work at different speeds according to customers' needs. One of the robots can be operational within 60 minutes of being unpacked, the company said. It can be programmed by speaking to them or by watching the tasks they are due to perform. The robot, together with its controllers and other equipment, would cost from around $20,000 to over $100,000, it added. China is the world's biggest robotics market, installing 51% of new robots worldwide in 2023 according to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). China is ABB's biggest robots market, representing around 30% of its robots business. Atiya did not think the threat of U.S. tariffs on China would affect demand for robots because of both the strength of its internal market and labour shortages. The robots will be made at ABB's new factory in Shanghai. The Swiss company earlier this year announced its plan to spin off its robotics division, which competes with Japan's FANUC Corp (6954.T), opens new tab, Yaskawa and Germany's Kuka. Atiya said the spin-off was still on track to conclude by the second quarter of 2026, but declined to comment on its potential valuation, or if ABB had been approached by buyers. "We have to entertain anyone who is interested in a sale, but clearly our target is the spin-off," he added.

India's Dorf-Ketal in talks to raise $500 million private credit for European acquisition, sources say

MUMBAI, July 2 (Reuters) - India's Dorf-Ketal Chemicals is in talks with private credit lenders to raise around $500 million to fund the acquisition of a European peer owned by private equity, two sources told Reuters. The Mumbai-based speciality chemicals firm is putting together a broader financing package for the acquisition, with the private credit tranche expected to be a component, a source said. Both sources requested anonymity since the discussions are private. Term sheets with lenders are expected to be signed this month or next, while talks on the pricing of the bond issue are ongoing, one of the sources said. The name of the target company and the private credit funds involved could not be immediately determined. Dorf-Ketal did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The company, which supplies process chemicals and additives to oil refiners, has pursued smaller overseas acquisitions in recent years and in March expanded its distribution partnership with Germany's Lehvoss Group. If finalised, the deal would mark Dorf-Ketal's largest acquisition to date, one of the sources said, and comes ahead of its planned initial public offering. The company filed draft papers for a 50 billion-rupee ($583.5 million) IPO in January. ($1 = 85.6850 Indian rupees)

Baidu launches AI video generator, overhauls search features

BEIJING, July 2 (Reuters) - China's Baidu ( opens new tab on Wednesday launched an AI-driven video generator for businesses as well as a major upgrade to its search engine. The image-to-video model, called MuseSteamer, is capable of generating videos up to 10 seconds long and comes in three versions - Turbo, Pro and Lite. Over the past year, artificial intelligence heavyweights like OpenAI and big global tech companies have been expanding beyond chatbots to text-to-video or image-to-video generators. In China, ByteDance, Tencent ( opens new tab and Alibaba ( opens new tab have also launched models. While many rival products, including OpenAI's Sora, target consumers with subscription plans, Baidu's MuseSteamer is aimed only at business users and a consumer app is not yet available. The search engine overhaul includes a redesigned search box that accepts longer queries and supports voice and image-based searches. The platform also displays more targeted content using Baidu's AI technology. Baidu has faced increasing pressure as AI-based chatbots such as ByteDance's Doubao and Tencent's Yuanbao become more popular. (This story has been refiled to correct the spelling of MuseSteamer in paragraph 4)
