Vidya Balan gets candid about awkward on-screen intimacies, recalls actor who didn't brush after eating Chinese: 'Could smell garlic, soy sauce…'

Agencies Vidya Balan recently shared humorous and uncomfortable early career experiences in an interview. She recounted an intimate scene complicated by a co-star's garlic-laden breath and her debut film, Parineeta, where Sanjay Dutt eased her nervousness during their first on-screen kiss.
When viewers see passion unfold on screen, little do they realize the strange—and sometimes smelly—realities behind the camera. In a light-hearted yet revealing conversation with Anupama Chopra for The Hollywood Reporter India , Vidya Balan opened up about some of the most personal, humorous, and uncomfortable moments of her journey in cinema. Among the anecdotes that surfaced was a particularly awkward incident early in her career. Without naming names, Vidya recalled shooting an intimate scene with a co-star who, just before their romantic moment, had gorged on Chinese food—and skipped brushing afterward. 'I could smell garlic, soy sauce, everything… and he hadn't brushed,' Vidya quipped, laughing. 'In my head, I was thinking, 'Do you not have a partner?'' Despite the urge, she didn't offer him a mint. 'I was too new, too scared,' she admitted with a smile. Her honesty, delivered with characteristic wit, strikes a chord with many young professionals navigating early career awkwardness, especially in industries like acting where physical proximity is part of the job description.
The tone of the interview shifted when Vidya reminisced about shooting her debut film Parineeta —the movie that launched her into the public eye and into hearts. In a particularly emotional moment, she recounted shooting her very first on-screen kiss with none other than Sanjay Dutt.
Despite being a seasoned actor, Dutt surprised her with his vulnerability. 'He came up to me and said, 'I'm nervous. How do we do this?' And I thought, he's so seasoned… and he's saying this!' she laughed. But it wasn't nervousness—it was kindness. Dutt's gesture, Vidya explained, was aimed at easing her discomfort as a newcomer. 'He made me feel safe. It put me at ease because I didn't know what I was doing.' What stayed with her most wasn't just the scene, but what happened after. 'He kissed my forehead and said, 'You're doing great.' That's why Sanjay Dutt is Sanjay Dutt.'
Marking two decades in cinema, Vidya remains unshaken by the industry's harsh beauty standards. 'I think I am shamelessly optimistic,' she said during the same interview. 'I've had people tell me I need to lose weight. But I've always believed there is nothing wrong with me.'
That self-belief, she emphasized, helped her stay grounded through the pressures of stardom. 'I was still playing leads. Those insecurities have never really weighed me down.' Now, for the first time in years, Vidya finds herself in a state of peace. 'I'm not experiencing stress. I'm reading scripts, meeting people… I've locked in two films,' she shared, though remaining tight-lipped about the details.

Rivalling Musk's Optimus Robot, China Unveils Rs 5 Lakh Bot That Can Fist-Fight

A humanoid robot that can fist-fight and even do cartwheels has been unveiled by a Chinese company that costs a little over Rs 5 lakh ($6,000), rivalling other companies producing similar bots. The new R1 robot by Unitree Robotics, unveiled on Friday, could be seen performing handstands and throwing combination punches. The R1 weighs about 55 pounds and has 26 joints to allow for flexible movement. It is also equipped with multimodal artificial intelligence, including voice and image recognition. The robot's capabilities, as shown in the viral video, mark a significant leap forward in robotic locomotion and balance. Apart from displaying ample boxing capabilities, the robot also performed "kip-up' -- a complex gymnastic manoeuvre involving a person or robot transitioning from a supine position to standing without using their hands. See the viral video here: Unitree Introducing | Unitree R1 Intelligent Companion Price from $5900 Join us to develop/customize, ultra-lightweight at approximately 25kg, integrated with a Large Multimodal Model for voice and images, let's accelerate the advent of the agent era!🥰 — Unitree (@UnitreeRobotics) July 25, 2025 As of the last update, the video had garnered nearly three million views and hundreds of comments, with the majority asking if the robot could perform everyday chores. "Will it fight anyone you point at? Asking for a friend," said one user while another added: "Can it walk my dog and serve breakfast to my kids?" Meanwhile, other users tagged Elon Musk and his Tesla Optimus company, which also develops general-purpose, bipedal humanoids, capable of performing tasks that are unsafe, repetitive or boring. "Yo @Tesla@Tesla_Optimus@elonmusk. You guys still trying compete? Hope you're not still in the lab in few years while these guys are ramping and deploying next year?" the user said. Apart from Mr Musk's company, US firm Boston Dynamics and its Atlas robots have also helped pioneer the humanoid robot market. However, an advanced human-like bot for just Rs 5 lakh, if done successfully, could mark a major milestone for China in the robotics and AI race. Currently, Unitree's larger, more advanced humanoid robot H1 sells for more than Rs 77 lakh ($90,000). Unitree's older G1 humanoid, which has costs Rs 13.8 lakh ($16,000), grew popular for use in research labs and schools.

Revenged Love, a popular Chinese drama, is rising in the Asian charts. The popularity of its main actors is rising, especially Ziyu, who was once an idol before becoming an actor. But as fame has grown, there has also been an unsettling rise in sasaeng (stalker) fan incidents, which are pushing the limits of personal privacy. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Over the previous couple of weeks, reports have come out of fans chasing Ziyu in cars, fighting with airline staff at airports, and rudely confronting him over online rumors. However, the most recent viral incident has sparked admiration as well as outrage. Ziyu is seen loading things into his car in a basement parking lot in a video that has gone viral. When the video stabilizes after a brief exaggeration, Ziyu is seen holding a phone in a pink case, which was most likely taken from a sasaeng fan who was filming him without permission. Clearly annoyed, Ziyu shouts at someone off-screen before the clip ends. Although many were shocked by the incident, the majority of fans praised Ziyu for sticking to his values. "Ziyu was seen taking the sasaeng's phone cause he was so fed up," a fan wrote on Twitter. "This is what happens when you mess with our divas!" Another stated, "Seeing Ziyu taking those crazy sasaengs' phones is just so satisfying to watch. Well done, Ziyu. Those sasaengs are so annoying." Another admirer said, "Good job, Ziyu! Protect urself from that kind of person. " Fans are now calling on Ziyu's management to put in stronger safeguards against the mental and emotional toll that sasaeng fans impose on their idols as a result of the situation. Ziyu's career is still on a solid upward path in spite of these obstacles. According to sources, Ziyu is in serious talks to star in a new romantic thriller series that plans to start production later this year, and Revenged Love is still dominating streaming platforms. In addition, he is preparing for his eagerly anticipated comeback to the stage with a solo music release in the winter of 2025.
