‘Awareness camps saved 90 trafficked girls last month'
"Multiple awareness camps at the ground level by the state, NGOs, and central agencies — from schools to railway stations— have helped save more than 90 women and girls in the past month alone. The RPF-Just Rights for Children (with 400 NGOs under one umbrella) combination has just begun tasting success here, just like in a few other parts of India," said a spokesperson for Shakti Vahini, an NGO that works with trafficking victims across Bengal.
According to NGO workers, the top concern areas remain north Bengal and the Sundarbans. To try and negate illegal trafficking, multiple NGOs have come together with both state and central agencies, in Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Barupur police district.

Manager of DRDO guest house detained for spying
Jaisalmer: Central intelligence agencies detained on Monday Mahendra Singh, a manager of a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) guest house located near Chandan Field Firing Range, Jaisalmer, on suspicion of espionage for the ISI, Pakistan's intelligence agency. Jaisalmer SP Abhishek Shivhare confirmed the detention, saying that Singh was set to undergo intensive interrogation at the Joint Interrogation Centre here on Tuesday where security and intelligence agencies will collaborate to uncover the full extent of the information he allegedly shared with the ISI. Officials are particularly focused on determining how long this activity has been going on and the nature of the leaked information. Singh, from Almora in Uttarakhand, has been stationed at the guesthouse for the past four to five years and is suspected to have provided sensitive information regarding strategic military operations, including movements and test data pertaining to DRDO, the Indian Army and Air Force, to operatives in Pakistan. In certain cases, police found that the syndicate members scout hospital corridors and rural villages for the most vulnerable or people already facing death or poverty. They convince families to hand over Aadhaar details, alter addresses to bypass blacklisted pin codes, and open accounts in their names using small finance banks with less oversight. Then came the life insurance policies where policies worth ₹20 lakh or more are taken. IIB has been stepping up efforts using several modules and platforms for fraud detection and prevention. For instance, one of the tools that stored 144 million records helped identify 300,000 potentially fraudulent life insurance cases, involving a sum assured of ₹1.73 lakh crore over five years.
