From exile to home: Tribal families reclaim roots in Gujarat village after a decade
These families, belonging to the Kodarvi community, had abandoned their native village on account of the tribal practice of Chadotaru — a traditional vendetta custom that had driven them into exile.
The emotional return of nearly 300 members of these families to their ancestral land was facilitated through a collaborative initiative involving the Banaskantha police, local administration, and community leaders. The event was marked by symbolic rituals, heartfelt gestures of reconciliation, and a firm governmental commitment to integrate these families back into the mainstream with dignity and support.
Addressing the gathering, Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi called the occasion historic not just for Gujarat, but for tribal communities across India. 'Today marks the eradication of an old social ill and a step towards progress, peace, and collective prosperity,' he said. He praised the elders of both communities for choosing dialogue over conflict and honoured them on stage for their role in restoring harmony. 'Unity is the true identity of society, while hatred is a burden of darkness,' the Minister said.
Mr. Sanghavi welcomed the returning families with kumkum tilak, conducted traditional housewarming rituals (gruh pravesh), and later they sowed maize seeds in their fields to mark a new beginning. Each household was provided with educational kits, ration supplies, a wheelchair in the case of a differently-abled member, and certificates of appreciation for their courage and patience.
The Kodarvi families, who had scattered across Palanpur and Surat after fleeing Mota Pipada, were resettled on their legally owned 8.5-hectare land. The Banaskantha police, working with the District Inspector of Land Records, cleared and levelled the overgrown, desolate land to make it cultivable again, officials said.
They said that two houses had already been constructed, and under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, efforts were underway to provide permanent housing for all families. Partnerships with voluntary organisations were also being leveraged to provide essential infrastructure and livelihood support.
Mr. Sanghavi lauded the Banaskantha police for going beyond their security duties to help achieve lasting peace through community outreach. 'This is an exemplary case of law enforcement leading social change,' the Minister said.

HRC comes to rescue of a senior citizen
Chandigarh: The Haryana Human Rights Commission has taken serious note of a complaint submitted by senior citizen Amar Singh Murwala, a resident of Panipat district, and has raised concerns regarding administrative functioning and denial of basic entitlements. The complaint before the commission highlighted three key issues: Arbitrary deactivation of Parivar Pehchan Patra; denial of housing assistance under government schemes; and inhuman and unsanitary living conditions in an old-age home. The complainant, a verified beneficiary under the Antyodaya category, had reported that his Parivar Pehchan Patra was deactivated without any prior notice, enquiry, or opportunity to be heard. As a result, he was deprived of multiple welfare schemes, including Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Old-Age Pension. Murwala, who is landless, homeless, and socio-economically disadvantaged, had also alleged that despite fulfilling eligibility criteria, he was not allotted any accommodation or assistance under either the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) or Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana (MMAY). He continued to live without proper housing, despite repeated appeals to authorities. Regarding unhygienic conditions at Red Cross Old-Age Home in Panipat, the complainant had alleged that the living conditions at the facility are extremely unsanitary and unsafe, posing a risk to health and dignity. Commission Chairperson Justice Lalit Batra has termed the matter as a 'serious case of administrative failure and insensitivity', further stating that the actions, or inactions, violate the complainant's right to live with dignity under Article 21 of the Constitution, and statutory duties under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. In his detailed order, Justice Batra has issued immediate verification and reactivation of the deactivated Parivar Pehchan Patra, submission of a detailed report by the authorities, explaining the deactivation, steps taken for restoration, and future preventive measures. The Housing for All Department of the Haryana government has been directed to reassess the complainant's eligibility and, if found eligible, allot a 100 square yard residential plot or provide alternate housing support. All concerned departments have been directed to submit Action Taken Reports to the commission before the next hearing, scheduled for October 15.

BJP minister publicly threatens to slap gram sevak at function
MUMBAI: After several incidents of Mahayuti leaders demonstrating their power play and arrogance, another one surfaced on Sunday. NCP(SP) MLA Rohit Pawar shared a video of BJP leader and minister of state Meghana Bordikar publicly threatening to slap a gram sevak, and advised CM Devendra Fadnavis to control his ministers. Bordikar, however, claimed that the video was misleading, and said she was warning the gram sevak, as there were complaints that he had demanded bribes from widows and women labourers to register them for government schemes. BJP minister Meghana Bordikar. For the last several months, Mahayuti politicians such as Sanjay Shirsat, Yogesh Kadam, Sanjay Rathod, Gopichand Padalkar and Manikrao Kokate have damaged the image of the state government on account of corruption charges or arrogant behaviour in public. A displeased Fadnavis warned all his ministers in the last cabinet meeting to stay away from such conduct and not force him to take action against them. The viral video of Bordikar, who holds several portfolios, including energy, public health, and women and child development, was taken at a government function held at Bori village in Parbhani. It showed her threatening the gram sevak over a mic from the stage. 'Stop doing work for someone else,' she said. 'Who's paying your salary? Do you think we don't know what you are doing? My name is Meghana Bordikar, and mark my words, I will give you a tight slap and dismiss you from work. I have deliberately brought the zilla parishad CEO here to see what you are doing. Do your job properly, otherwise quit.' Rohit Pawar, who shared the video on social media, slammed Bordikar for speaking so insolently with a government servant and threatening to slap him. 'After the Mahayuti minister playing rummy in the legislative council, another running a dance bar and yet another caught sitting with a bag of money, here is one more minister who is threatening to slap a gram sevak,' he said. 'Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, this is not just maligning the image of your government but also that of Maharashtra. Does the minister have the authority to slap a gram sevak? Control your ministers.' Pawar also alleged that Bordikar had given targets to gram sevaks to bring in a certain number of beneficiaries of government schemes to the function but that particular gram sevak failed to achieve the target. Bordikar, however, claimed that the video was deceptive. 'Rohit Pawar should not mislead the people of the state by giving half information,' she said. 'There was a complaint that this gram sevak was harassing widows and women labourers by demanding money from them to register them for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. As a guardian minister, I spoke to the gram sevak in the language that he understands. I have also said in the video that the poor should get the benefit of housing.' Fadnavis, on his part, defended Bordikar. 'I spoke to her and she gave me an explanation,' he said. 'The video does not contain the full conversation.'
