Attero to invest ₹100 cr to expand rare earth recycling capacity to 30,000 tonnes
, India's largest
e-waste recycling
company, has announced plans to scale up its rare earth element (REE) recycling capacity from 300 tonnes to 30,000 tonnes annually over the next 12 to 24 months. The expansion will involve an investment of ₹100 crore and supports the Union government's recently launched
National Critical Mineral Mission
(NCMM), which aims to reduce import dependence and strengthen domestic supply chains. The announcement assumes significance in the face of curbs imposed by China on exports of rare earth magnets.
Rare earth elements such as Neodymium (Nd), Praseodymium (Pr), and Dysprosium (Dy) are vital for sectors including electric mobility, wind energy, and electronics. With the global
REE market
expected to reach $10.9 billion by 2029 and REE magnets forecasted to exceed $30.3 billion by 2033, India has identified recycling and extraction of these materials as a key strategic priority.
Technology-led expansion
'Attero has consistently advocated for India's self-reliance in critical minerals to reduce dependence on imports and counter China's dominance in rare earth supply chains,' said Nitin Gupta, CEO and Co-founder of Attero.
'We are proud to be the only Indian company with proven deep-tech and globally patented processes to refine black mass and recover rare earth elements with over 98 per cent efficiency and 99.9 pe purity. With our existing capability and technology leadership, we are ready to scale our REE recycling capacity from 1 to 100 tonnes per day to reach a total of 30,000 tonnes annually. We plan to invest ₹100 crore towards this expansion,' he added.
Attero uses a proprietary process to extract REEs from e-waste and end-of-life electronics such as hard disk drives, laptops, neckbands, and earphones, which contain high concentrations of Nd, Pr, Ce, Gd, and Dy. The company states that the method is more energy-efficient and produces lower
greenhouse gas emissions
than traditional mining processes.
In FY25, Attero processed over 150,000 tonnes of e-waste and 15,000 tonnes of
lithium-ion batteries
. It targets 100 per cent year-on-year growth and aims to increase e-waste processing capacity to 415,000 tonnes and battery recycling to 50,000 tonnes annually.
International patents and global expansion plans
Attero holds over 46 patents globally, including recent grants related to rare earth recovery in India, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, China, and Taiwan. These patents support the company's international expansion strategy, with future operations planned in Europe and the United States.
The National Critical Mineral Mission recognises recycling as a central strategy to secure critical mineral supply chains. Attero's expanded capabilities align with this policy framework, offering a domestic pathway to reduce reliance on imports and enhance India's position in global critical mineral recovery.

COIMBATORE: The penalty and legal action against firms selling substandard cotton seeds and fertilisers will be reframed, stated Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Coimbatore on Friday. He also said the ministry is working to make cotton farming a profitable business for the farmer. On the increasing human-wildlife conflict issue, the central minister said, "Agriculture and forest are State Subjects. The Union Government has been providing necessary cooperation altogether whenever the State Government requires it."

Will meet PM soon to discuss defence corridor proposal: M B Patil
Bengaluru: Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil revealed that the Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has responded positively to Karnataka's proposal to establish defence corridors in both northern and southern regions of the state. The proposal includes the Hubballi-Dharwad–Belagavi–Vijayapura belt in North Karnataka and the Bengaluru Rural–Kolar–Chikkaballapur region in South Karnataka. Speaking to media representatives at his residence, Minister Patil stated, 'We are planning to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon to present our proposal. Once approved, it will move forward for Cabinet-level consideration.' Patil emphasized the global demand for deep-tech industries such as defence, aerospace, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence due to evolving global geopolitics—citing the Israel-Iran conflict, the Russia-Ukraine war, and technological shifts. 'Over the next two decades, these sectors will see exponential growth. For instance, Nvidia has become the first company to achieve a $4 trillion market cap in this space. Karnataka must prepare itself to harness this opportunity,' he said. He also addressed the ongoing resistance from farmers regarding land acquisition for the proposed Hi-Tech Defence and Aerospace Park near Devanahalli. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to hold a high-level meeting on July 15 to discuss the issue. 'The government must ensure fair compensation to the farmers if acquisition proceeds. We consider them our own,' Patil added. Regarding the establishment of a second international airport in Bengaluru, Patil said he plans to meet Union Civil Aviation Ministry officials in Delhi next week. 'We're studying models like Noida and Navi Mumbai airports and will make a well-informed decision for Bengaluru's aviation future,' he said. Clarifying political speculations, Patil asserted that there are no vacancies in either the Chief Minister's office or the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) presidency. ICEA Chairman welcomes rare earth magnet incentives, terms it 'timely' intervention
New Delhi: Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), welcomed the central government initiatives to ramp up rare earth magnets production in India, particularly the incentives the latter is earmarking for. ICEA is the apex industry body representing the entire electronics sector. "We are extremely excited, although this will make set up capacities in the longer run, but the intention is very good and I think it is very timely because the industry is facing a bit of a crisis and the supply of magnets is quite difficult to procure if we set up independent Capacity here," the ICEA Chairman told ANI. "It will be a true triumph. We are very excited about this announcement. The magnets is a core industry, and the processing of rare earths and metals is a very core industry. It's a very good development. I think this is a substantial sum of money. The scheme is well articulated. We'll go through the details and we will fully support the government in this great initiative," he added. The central government has earmarked ₹1,345 crore to incentivise rare earth magnets production in India, aimed at building domestic capacity when there are reports of global short supply. "Some progress is going on (on the rare earth magnet production front). We have already allocated ₹1,345 crore (for subsidy). We are on course to select the manufacturers," Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy told reporters at a press conference earlier today. Heavy Industries Secretary Kamran Rizvi, accompanying the minister, said the scheme has been circulated and it is currently under inter-ministerial consultation. "We are interested only in magnets. Anybody who gives us magnets will get incentives," the top official said. It is expected that there will be at least 2 manufacturers who will participate in this program. Early this April, China announced a decision to implement export controls on certain rare earth-related items, pushing a supply shortage across the world, including India. India was in touch with the Chinese side, seeking predictability in the supply of rare earth metals -- which had been put under the export controls regime by the Xi administration. China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity - has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems. Beyond China, there are only a few alternative suppliers of critical minerals. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the setting up of the Critical Mineral Mission in the Union Budget for 2024-25 on July 23, 2024. The Union Cabinet in January 2025 approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an expenditure of ₹16,300 crore and an expected investment of ₹18,000 crore by Public Sector Undertakings. Recently, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy said the central government is actively encouraging private companies to mine and explore critical minerals overseas and bring them back into the country to serve the needs of the domestic industry.
