First time in 82 yrs, girls walk into Campion School

Time of India27-07-2025
Mumbai : The Campion all-boys school, which welcomed little girls into its hallowed halls for the first time after adopting the co-education (co-ed) format of schooling, saw children enter dressed as their favourite animals on their first day of school, on Monday.
Little boys and girls sat together on tiny desks and chairs for the first time in the school's 82-year history. They sat twiddling and fidgeting on their new desks and chairs as the class teacher tried to get them to sing along to a song.
The school conducted a ceremonial walk with the kindergarten children walking hand in hand with Prashant Narnaware, secretary to the Governor of Maharashtra, and Deputy Commissioner of Police Ragasudha R.
The school has newly built a wing that will cater to the newly gender-mixed classes for nursery and junior kindergarten grades, even as the senior kindergarten continues to be a boys-only class.

The change has been years in the making, and this old and famous institution of the city is taking things slowly. Principal Sarah Thomas said, 'As the current batch of nursery and junior kg moves to higher classes, those will be upgraded to the co-ed format.'
The nursery and junior kindergarten classes will also have a new board affiliation and curriculum, with the school adopting the Cambridge Early Years Curriculum.
TOI
had earlier reported about the institution's intention to move to co-education classes. 'We believe that starting co-education from the early years fosters empathy, collaboration, and mutual respect — values that are essential in today's world,' said the principal on the shift.
'It has been three years of consultations and deliberations with our board, teachers, alumni network, and the Jesuit community before we reached this day.
' When asked why the school decided to take in girls now after so many years, she said, 'It really required concentrated and cohesive effort.'
Shah Rukh Contractor, former chairman of the school's governing council, said, 'When we were deciding to start co-education, we had a choice between the Cambridge Board and the International Board. We decided to join the Cambridge board as we wanted to serve a larger section of society with more value-for-money education.'
As Campion School embraces co-education, it decides to change with the times, blending tradition with inclusivity, preparing students to thrive in a diverse and evolving world.

Chaos, delays at post-office: Server woe clashes with Rakhi rush, poorly serving people & staff

Bhopal: An unusually crowded, noisy and haphazard scene would've greeted a person if they were to visit the main post office in TT Nagar on Tuesday. Long queues at each window and loud sporadic arguments and quarelling due to the "server problem" became a common sight. With the Raksha Bhandhan festival nearing, people were eager to send rakhis and gifts through posts from kin far away, the postal department servers played spoilsport. For the last two days the department servers have been down nationally, and no parcels could be booked via speed post service. Consumers are making rounds of sub-offices to main offices, without any luck. Instead, crowds are swelling by the hour at the post offices and restless consumers are arguing with the harried postal staff. "I've been standing here since 4pm and there is no guarantee when the system will be up and my parcel will be booked. Why is this slackness during festival hours, can't the department fix it?" asked a consumer. A staffer explained that the servers were down nationwide and are now fluctuating, leading to prolonged waiting times. Wishing anonymity he told TOI, "We cannot do much when the servers aren't working well. It's a pan-India issue due to the introduction of a new application last month. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Explore the Top 20 Cleanest and Safest Blue Flag Beaches Worldwide zenlifemag Learn More Undo Earlier, bookings were offline too but now it is all online," Chote Lal, a resident, said, "I was standing in the queue for the entire day and my speed post was only sent around 6:00 pm." Another resident, Bhawna, observed the long queues and server issues at the office gates and remarked, "There's some technical problem, so we'll return to the office again tomorrow." Reeta Garg, senior superintendent at Central Post Office, TT Nagar said, "New states are being added to the recently launched application, so it has slowed down a bit. The new application is in a transition phase but we're expecting that it will be resolved by tomorrow (Wednesday). Keeping the Rakhi festival in mind, we'll be opening all major post offices in Bhopal early at 7.30 am starting Wednesday till Aug 9 to cover up for the inconvenience faced by people. " Meanwhile, another staffer at the office anonymously stated that they hope the servers become fully operational today; otherwise, early opening of the office at 7:30 am will not benefit anyone— the consumers or the employees.

Undertake one ward work at a time: Trichy mayor

1 2 Trichy: Trichy mayor Mu Anbalagan on Tuesday inspected the ongoing underground drainage (UGD) phase IV work near Khajamalai in ward 60 and instructed corporation officials and contractors to complete pipeline installation work in one ward at a time. The instruction comes in the wake of contractors digging roads across wards simultaneously, thereby disturbing public movement and delaying repair work. "Contractors were told to complete the entire work in one ward and then move to the other wards, as monsoon is fast approaching. They have also been instructed to install manholes immediately. Barricades will be placed at the work sites to ensure public and workers' safety," the mayor told TOI. Areas left out in phases II and III, such as Kuzhumani Road (ward 8), Vayalur Road (ward 25), a part of Karumandapam (ward 55), Ponmalaipatti (ward 46), and the KK Nagar and K Sathanur areas in wards 63, 64, and 65, will be covered in phase IV of the UGD project under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. Learning bitter lessons from phases II and III of UGD, during which residents complained of workers digging all major and residential roads altogether and extensively affecting the road connectivity of interior residential areas, the mayor said the engineering department was urged to monitor and expedite the pipeline installation before the onset of the northeast monsoon.

No impact of bus strike in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru: The strike called by transport corporation employees led by the Joint Action Committee of trade unions of Karnataka did not impact KSRTC services in Dakshina Kannada district. The Mangaluru and Puttur divisions of the KSRTC in the district operated without any disruptions, with all employees reporting for duty on Tuesday. Officials said that employees were convinced about the problems of people and ensured that services on all routes were operated. Rajesh Shetty, senior divisional controller of KSRTC Mangaluru division, told TOI that the division operated buses on all routes as per schedule. "Services in our division have not been affected due to the strike. All buses scheduled for the day operated on the prescribed routes. Even buses on long-distance routes like Bengaluru, Mysuru, and other places also commenced services from morning itself," he said. Shetty said that the divisions in the district managed the situation strategically to ensure that people were not inconvenienced. "We succeeded in convincing employees to stick to the govt decision. For the past four to five days, we have been convincing employees not to inconvenience commuters by engaging in a strike. Our efforts were successful as all employees reported for duty to provide bus services. Meanwhile, they are duty-bound as per the provisions of the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to act, which is in force till Dec end," he added. The KSRTC services to Dharmasthala were disrupted in the morning. However, the services resumed later. Officials of the KSRTC Puttur division said that the division operated buses on all routes as per schedule. Dakshina Kannada has a large number of private buses operating on all major routes, which also makes the district unaffected by the strike.
