UAE online food delivery market likely to expand at 10.2% a year

Through 2033, the UAE's online meal delivery industry is anticipated to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.2 per cent, driven by consumer demands for convenience, speed, and loyalty benefits, data shows. The Saudi Arabian market is projected to grow at a 15.4 per cent CAGR through 2030. This surge is primarily driven by urbanisation, advanced digital infrastructure including widespread internet access and smartphone usage, and a growing middle class with increasing disposable income and preference for digital convenience. Recent data from Syrve Mena, a leading restaurant software provider in the Middle East, reveals that the first half of 2025 brought about a substantial shift in consumer behaviour in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Mobile food delivery orders in the UAE and Saudi Arabia grew 30 per cent rise during H1, data showed. 'Mobile-based delivery will remain central to foodservice strategy in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia as they continue to develop digitally and increase mobile order volumes by over 10 per cent year-on-year. Consistent seasonal peaks, changing spending habits, and rapidly advancing technology are making mobile-first dining the new norm,' said Alexander Ponomarev, CEO at Syrve Mena. According to reports, as mobile order volumes continue to grow steadily and consumers demand digital convenience, forecasts predict that the share of mobile-based orders will exceed 80 per cent in both markets by the end of 2025. This trend is further fueled by high digital penetration, making the digital transformation of the food delivery market inevitable. The dominance of food aggregators and restaurants' increasing drive toward process automation are also contributing to this shift. According to Syrve Mena data, food aggregators continue to be the most popular mobile order channel in both markets. Approximately 75 per cent of mobile orders placed by surveyed restaurants are processed by apps like HungerStation, Talabat, and Deliveroo. The remaining 25 per cent is handled by call centres, proprietary apps, and websites run by restaurants — a tactic that larger chains seeking greater control over operational procedures can afford. Majority of orders come from mobile devices. More than 70 per cent of all food delivery transactions are made through mobile phones, reflecting the region's preference for digital convenience. While it is challenging to accurately estimate the increase in mobile orders in H1 2025 compared to 2024, Talabat reports a 30 per cent year-over-year increase in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) in Q1, which may indicate a significant rise in order volume in H1 2025. Revenue and adjusted Ebitda both grew by 34 per cent, while adjusted net income rose by 24 per cent. Mobile delivery activity in the UAE reached its first peak in March 2025, coinciding with Ramadan, a time traditionally associated with increased food ordering. Another seasonal surge is expected between June and September, when high temperatures make outdoor dining less appealing and consumers turn to delivery more often. The time slot from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM consistently yields the highest volume of mobile delivery orders across most restaurant categories. For fast food, Italian, Indian, and international restaurant chains, this evening window is the most popular. However, Arabic food exhibits a distinct trend, with traditional breakfast items driving the highest delivery activity between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Popular dishes range from kebabs in Arabic restaurants to rotis and butter naan in Indian chains. In the global H1 2025 market, the most popular time for food ordering is generally 6:00 PM local time, according to restaurant industry reports. Additionally, there's a noticeable increase in breakfast orders, particularly on Monday mornings. The later evening peak in orders observed in the UAE and Saudi Arabia may be linked to Ramadan, when evening meals shift to after sunset, analysts say.

Mideast Stocks: Most Gulf markets gain on earnings boost; Saudi index extends losses

Most stock markets rebounded on Thursday, lifted by positive corporate earnings and announcements, though Saudi Arabia's benchmark index remained under pressure and logged an eighth straight loss. Dubai's main index jumped 2.2% to hit a fresh 17.5-year high, buoyed by financials. Emirates NBD climbed 4%, extending gains for a third consecutive session, after the top lender announced it had concluded 3.9 billion dirhams in syndicated loans for Dubai Metro's Blue Line Project. Budget airliner Air Arabia surged 3.9% to a record high on plans to increase its Abu Dhabi unit's operational capacity by 40% this year, following Wizz Air Abu Dhabi's exit from the market, citing regional instability. In Abu Dhabi, the Index added 0.7%, with a 3.5% surge in First Abu Dhabi Bank. Strong bank earnings supported sentiment across the UAE financials. Qatar's benchmark gave up early losses to close 1% higher after Qatar Islamic Bank rose 3.8%. The country's top Islamic lender reported a 5.3% year-on-year rise in first-half earnings and declared a 0.4 riyal per share dividend, up 60% from a year earlier. Markets also calmed after U.S. President Donald Trump denied that he was planning to fire the Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, but kept the door open to the possibility. A Bloomberg report had said Trump was likely to fire Powell soon. Investors believed that Powell's replacement would have a more lenient stance on monetary policy and that additional interest-rate cuts would be possible this year. Monetary policy in the Gulf tends to mirror the Fed's moves, given the region's currency pegs to the U.S. dollar. Saudi Arabia's benchmark index slipped 0.3%, falling for an eighth consecutive session, with Saudi National Bank losing 1.8%. Outside the Gulf, Egypt's blue-chip index gained 1%, nearing an all-time high, with most sectors in the green. Egypt's Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk said on Wednesday he was confident the country would hit its key economic reform targets and have a delayed review of its $8 billion International Monetary Fund programme completed by September or October. SAUDI ARABIA eased 0.3% to 11,007 ABU DHABI rose 0.7% to 10,242 DUBAI climbed 2.2% to 6,103 QATAR gained 1% to 10,915 EGYPT added 1% to 33,821 BAHRAIN eased 0.1% to 1,945 OMAN advanced 1.2% to 4,654 KUWAIT increased 0.9% to 9,309 (Reporting by Amna Mariyam and Ateeq Shariff in Bengaluru; Editing by Arun Koyyur)

Uber partnering with Saudi-backed Lucid and Nuro to launch robotaxis in 2026

Uber Technology has teamed up with Saudi Arabia-backed electric vehicle maker Lucid Motors and US robotics company Nuro to launch a global robotaxi programme, as the race towards self-driving transport accelerates. San Francisco-based Uber will be making 'multi-hundred-million dollar investments' in both Lucid and Nuro for the robotaxis, with the first service to be launched in a 'major US city' in the latter part of 2026, Uber said on Thursday. Uber plans to use at least 20,000 Lucid vehicles equipped with the level-4 Nuro Driver platform through six years, it said. The first Lucid-Nuro robotaxi prototype is already operating autonomously on a closed circuit in Las Vegas. Level 4 refers to the second-highest of the six levels of vehicle autonomy, which run from 0 to 5, in which vehicles do not require human intervention under most circumstances. Level 5, the highest, requires no human attention and vehicles under this status may not even have steering wheels or pedals. Nuro Driver is able to 'mimic safe natural driving behaviour, integrating an end-to-end AI model with reliable safeguards for precision and reliability', according to its website. 'Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities for the better,' Dara Khosrowshahi, chief executive of Uber, said. Driverless, or autonomous, vehicles, are seen as the future of transport, and major companies are racing to make advancements in its technologies, trying to perfect their platforms. These vehicles, in which billions of investments have been poured into, are meant to support the sustainable transport agenda countries are aiming for. However, there has been a lot of debate on when fully autonomous vehicles will become roadworthy. A number of reports have shown that it may take quite a while, with a 2023 study from GlobalData suggesting it would take 20 years to achieve this level of innovation. The Uber-Lucid-Nuro partnership would be 'the start of our path to extend our innovation and technology leadership into this multi-trillion-dollar market', said Marc Winterhoff, interim chief executive of Lucid, which is backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The National has reached out to the companies seeking comment on whether the service would be brought to other regions, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Uber said its operations in 70 countries and an average of 34 million trips per day will give it the resources necessary to 'make the benefits of self-driving vehicles accessible … to people everywhere'. Nuro, meanwhile, will lead the development and validation of comprehensive safety cases across dozens of categories using simulations, closed course testing and supervised on-road testing to verify that the robotaxi will operate safely, it said.
