Kitingan decries ‘fabricated' RM1.78mil claim linked to mining scandal
PETALING JAYA : Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) president Jeffrey Kitingan has denied a news report alleging he received RM1.78 million in connection with the alleged mining scandal in Sabah.
The Sabah deputy chief minister said the report by Malaysiakini was unfounded and politically-motivated with the goal of destabilising and demonising the current state government.
Kitingan, a key leader of the ruling state coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), said he reserves the right to take legal action over the 'irresponsible and damaging' report.
In a statement today, he said: 'I have never, ever, received any funds related to mining applications or any alleged scandal. The accusations are a deliberate fabrication orchestrated by desperate political actors seeking to exert undue influence on Sabah politics, a tactic historically employed since the 1960s.
'STAR categorically denies any involvement in mining activities. We have never applied for any mining licenses. As proponents of the Nature Conservation Agreement, mining is inherently incompatible with our conservation principles.'
Kitingan also said he and other STAR members had given full cooperation to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's investigation into the alleged scandal.
He claimed that he was being subject to these allegedly false accusations because he championed Sabah's rights, and expected more of such claims to emerge in the days leading to the Sabah state assembly elections expected later this year.
'It is not surprising that certain groups and parties will exploit this, hoping that this fake news will alter the dynamics and political landscape in Sabah,' he said.
Two assemblymen and a businessman are expected to be charged at the Kota Kinabalu court tomorrow in relation to the alleged mining scandal.
The alleged scandal was reported last year after a series of videos linking several Sabah assemblymen to it were leaked. The videos allegedly depicted discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in the state.
In February, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the initial batch of videos lacked credibility as they had been heavily edited.

MACC nabs senior GLC manager in Sabah over alleged bribery
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Sabah has arrested a senior manager of a government-linked company (GLC) on suspicion of soliciting and accepting RM16,000 in bribes in return for securing repair works under the GLC. According to a source, the male suspect, in his 50s, was detained at 4 pm on Wednesday (July 2) when he came to the Sabah MACC office to give a statement. "The suspect is believed to have committed the offence last year and received approximately RM16,000 via several bank transfers into his account. "The payments were allegedly made as an inducement for securing repair works in several locations across Sabah," the source said. Meanwhile, Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. He added that the suspect would be brought to the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate's Court on Thursday (July 3) for a remand application. – Bernama

Authorities have what they need in Sabah mining graft case, says Masidi
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun has declined to comment further on the state mining prospecting licence scandal, saying the matter is already before the courts and authorities "have what they need." "The case is really in court. "I mean, I don't think there's anything necessary to comment on," he told reporters after the SMJ Energy Networking dinner here last night. In November last year, Masidi was among several assemblymen implicated in short video clips linking them to a corruption scandal, which the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) dubbed "Op Adun". Following the publication of his video on Malaysiakini in December, Masidi immediately volunteered to have his statement recorded at the Sabah MACC office here. When asked whether the commission had recently recalled him, he said: "I wouldn't answer that question too, but I suppose MACC probably has all that they wanted." Last week, Malaysiakini again published photos of several other Gabungan Rakyat Sabah assemblymen, including state deputy chief minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, linking them to a similar scandal. The article was published less than 48 hours before businessman Datuk Albert Tei and two Sabah assemblymen, namely, Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob and Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy, were charged at the Kota Kinabalu Court here. Tei pleaded not guilty to offering bribes, while both assemblymen also denied receiving graft from the businessman. Their case management is fixed for Aug 5.
