Minister launches Ungaludan Stalin scheme in Erode district
The event was held in the presence of District Collector S. Kandasamy, Rajya Sabha MP Anthiyur P. Selvaraj, Erode MP K.E. Prakash, Erode East MLA V.C. Chandrakumar, Erode Mayor S. Nagarathinam, Corporation Commissioner Arpit Jain, and senior officials.
In his address, the Minister said that under the leadership of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over the past four years, the State Government had implemented a number of welfare schemes aimed at uplifting the poor and the underprivileged. He said the government had also placed emphasis on resolving public grievances through structured outreach initiatives such as the Ungaludan Stalin scheme.
As part of the initiative, a total of 340 special camps will be held across Erode. The Minister reiterated that the Chief Minister had announced in the Assembly that nearly one crore women would be benefitted from the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, and that 1.15 crore women were currently receiving monthly financial assistance under it.
Mr. Muthusamy said nearly 10,000 petitions had been received so far under the scheme , of which 4,000 had been resolved. Another 3,600 were under review, while some were pending due to lack of supporting documents. He urged the residents to make use of the camps to submit their petitions and avail of various welfare benefits.

Refuting allegations made by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini who accused his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee of compromising with the security of the country for vote bank politics, Trinamool Congress MP and chairperson of West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam on Saturday said that a witch-hunt is going on against migrants in the name of 'Bangladeshis'. In a social media post, the Haryana Chief Minister said there is no place for Bangladeshis in the country, and the sympathy shown by the West Bengal Chief Minister towards those who are compromising national interests is not only unfortunate but against national interest. 'From day one, we have said that there is no issue if the administration takes action against genuine infiltrators. But in the name of a witch-hunt against 'Bangladeshis', BJP-ruled states — including yours — have been unlawfully detaining our brothers and sisters who are working there. We strongly protest against the atrocities being committed against Bengali-speaking Indian citizens, and it is unfortunate that people like you are trying to falsely blame us,' Mr. Islam said. The Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP said it was unfortunate to see Mr. Saini criticising Ms. Banerjee in such an illogical manner — 'especially when you yourself are responsible for the brutalisation of Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal by unlawfully harassing them'. The MP further raised several questions to the Haryana Chief Minister such as whether it is illegal for someone to travel from one Indian State to another to work and if not, then why is the Haryana Police force harassing those who went to work from West Bengal. Mr. Islam also asked if Bengali is spoken only by Bangladeshis and has he ever heard the name of Rabindranath Tagore, who was a Bengali and composed the national anthem. A few days ago, West Bengal CM Ms. Banerjee and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had engaged in a war of words on social media on the topic of migrant workers. In another post, the chairperson of the State migrant welfare board added that hundreds of Bengali-speaking migrant workers working in different States have been unlawfully detained and harassed by BJP-ruled State governments like in Odisha, Maharashtra, and Delhi and many of them have even been deported to Bangladesh. Mr. Islam said that he had asked a question about the number of migrants working in other States, which was not provided by the Union government.

Parliamentary committee seeks answers from BHU on range of issues
The Parliamentary standing committee on education, women, children, youth and sports has sought answers to 40 questions from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on a range of issues such as academics, probe and compliance of National Commission for Women's directives among others, according to an official. One key concern is the prolonged absence of a regular vice-chancellor at the BHU. (File) The committee, led by Rajya Sabha MP Digvijay Singh, which inspected the BHU on July 1, has sought a written reply from BHU. The university administration is preparing answers to these questions, the official said. The panel also includes members such as Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, Dr Bhim Singh, Ghosi MP Rajiv Rai, MPs Rekha Sharma, Brijmohan Agarwal, Amardev Sharaddev Kale, Dr Hemang Joshi and Shobhanaben Mahendra Singh Baraiya. After a campus inspection and a marathon meeting with university officials, the committee has now sought a written response supported by relevant documents. One key concern is the prolonged absence of a regular vice-chancellor. The committee asked when the last full-time VC demitted office and how many administrative posts a single person can legally hold under BHU statutes. On the academic front, the committee inquired whether BHU currently has elected teacher, staff, and student bodies. It also raised multiple questions regarding the utilisation of funds under the Institute of Eminence (IoE) scheme. These include the total funding received over the past four financial years, the officials responsible for implementing the programme, audits conducted and the list and status of projects undertaken using IoE funds, particularly in terms of infrastructure development. Regarding administrative appointments, the committee asked whether the current registrar is holding additional charge or is duly appointed, and requested a list of registrars over the last decade, along with their appointment status. It also questioned the appointment status of the medical superintendent at Sir Sunderlal Hospital, asking for the last date of a regular appointment and the basis for the current temporary arrangement. Among financial queries, the committee asked about the doubling of grants to IMS (from ₹165 crore in 2020-21 to ₹305 crore in 2021-22) and whether there was any move to convert IMS into a full-fledged AIIMS. The committee raised concerns over the reported privatisation of CT scan and cardiac catheterisation & intervention (CCI) lab facilities at IMS-BHU, pointing out that NMC guidelines require such services to be institution-owned. It also questioned the prolonged tenure of the professor-in-charge of the trauma centre and whether the IMS director had written to the acting VC regarding their removal. The committee has also demanded the status and reports of internal probes such as the Prof Jyoti Shukla committee on the blood bank and the Prof PS Tripathi committee on the ₹104-crore GEM procurement for the emergency centre. It also flagged alleged irregularities in the lottery-based admissions to Central Hindu Schools (affiliated to BHU) for both boys and girls.

Congress accuses the government of doing ‘petty politics' over the motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma
The Congress on Saturday (July 26, 2025) accused the haratiya Janata Party of doing 'petty politics', unbothered about Constitutional principles, referring to reports which claimed that the Opposition-backed notice in the Rajya Sabha for removal of Justice Yashwant Varma had only been submitted but not admitted in the Upper House. The Congress attack on the Narendra Modi government came a day after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju asserted that there shouldn't remain any doubt and that the proceedings would begin in the Lok Sabha. In the Lok Sabha, the government secured the signatures of 152 MPs across the political spectrum to move a notice against Justice Varma – who faces allegations of corruption after wads of half-burnt currency notes were discovered at his official residence in Delhi on March 14 – while in the Rajya Sabha, 63 Opposition members had moved the notice. Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) office, Congress spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Abhishek Singhvi quoted former Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's July 21 statement in the House to argue that the notice, signed by 63 Opposition members, had been admitted by the Chair. Mr. Singhvi further argued that the former Chairman's comments had made it clear that only a statutory committee of inquiry, under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, had to be formed after consulting with the Lok Sabha Speaker since an identical motion for the removal of the judge was submitted in the Lower House. 'Dhankhar's a political exit' 'If the motion [in the Rajya Sabha] has not been admitted, then was a shadow boxing going on or a drama was going on?' the Congress leader asked. He asked if the BJP believed in 'one nation one party approach' since it doesn't want to acknowledge the Opposition notice and claimed that Mr. Dhankhar's departure was a 'political exit camouflaged as a constitutional lie'. Mr. Singhvi also accused the BJP of adopting double standards in its approach to judicial matters, particularly regarding Justice Varma as well as Justice Shekhar Yadav against whom the Opposition had moved a notice for removal for allegedly making communal remarks. 'We are also very concerned about this selective outrage and selective silence on Justice Varma, Justice Yadav — two judges' issues. This is typical BJP's double standard. The BJP's game of motions is less about law and more about optics... On judicial propriety, on anti-corruption movement and on judicial accountability, the BJP's mantra is talk the talk, never walk the walk. It is the worst example of hypocrisy on this entire episode,' he said.
