Supervisor seen providing answers to candidate during NMMC recruitment exam

Thane, July 19 (PTI) The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has lodged a police complaint after an exam supervisor was seen providing answers to a candidate during its ongoing Direct Service Recruitment Examination, it said on Saturday.
The incident took place during the online examination at a centre in Kolhapur district on July 16, the civic body said in a release.
After receiving a complaint, investigation was conducted, and CCTV footage showed that the supervisor was providing answers to a candidate 'without the candidate asking," it said.
The supervisor was immediately removed and a complaint was filed against him at the local police station, it said.
Around 55,000 candidates appeared for the exam, being conducted across 28 centres to fill up 668 posts, over three days, the civic body said.
The entire process is being conducted through Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) under the guidance of NMMC.
NMMC Commissioner Kailash Shinde said the recruitment process was transparent and being conducted as per the rules, and would continue as per the schedule. PTI COR KRK

Delhi Police constable injured in attack during raid on bootleggers premises
New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) A Delhi Police constable sustained serious injuries after a police team was attacked by a group of people, including a known bootlegger and his family members, during a raid in southeast Delhi's Gautampuri area, an official said on Tuesday. The incident took place on Monday evening after constable Lakhan of the Special Staff in the southeast district received a tip-off about a large consignment of illicit liquor being stored at the residence of Kailash (63), a habitual offender with multiple cases under the Excise Act, he said. 'Acting on the information, inspector Rajinder Singh Dagar, in-charge of the Special Staff, formed a team comprising sub-inspector Shubham and other personnel. The team, dressed in civil clothes, reached the location around 8 pm," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said. During initial surveillance, constables Lakhan and Satbir observed Kailash and another man openly selling liquor on the staircase of the house, he added. When the police team attempted to intervene, Kailash allegedly incited the crowd by shouting that someone should be killed to protect the business. Following this, Kailash, his wife Seeta, an associate named Sameer, a 17-year-old juvenile, and several others allegedly attacked the police team with lathis and bricks. Meanwhile, additional police force was called to the spot, and the situation was brought under control. Kailash, Seeta, Sameer, and the juvenile were apprehended, while others managed to flee under the cover of the gathered crowd. A case under relevant sections of the BNS was registered at the Badarpur police station. Six aircraft engine shutdown incidents and three May Day Call reported in India this year, says Union minister Murlidhar
India's Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, on Tuesday, 5 August 2025, said that in the year 2025, there have been a total of six aircraft engine shutdown incidents along with three incidents of mayday calls in the nation, reported the news agency PTI. "During 2025, from January to July (till date), a total of 06 incidents of engine shutdown and a total of 03 incidents of May Day calls have been reported," the Minister said in a written response to the Lok Sabha, as per the news report. The Minister also said that there have been two cases of engine shutdown, each involving IndiGo and SpiceJet, while one incident involved Air India and another with Alliance Air. The three incidents involving the Mayday calls also included the Air India crash of the AI 171 aircraft on 12 June 2025. The aircraft was headed towards London Gatwick Airport from India's Ahmedabad Airport. Moments after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport, the aircraft crashed into a nearby building. The other two mayday calls were from IndiGo and Air India Express, according to the agency report. A Mayday call is a globally recognised signal of distress, mostly used in aviation or maritime communications. The call sign is used in a life-threatening situation, like a potential aircraft crash. In aviation, a pilot repeats the Mayday call three times in a row to inform the air traffic controller (ATC) of the nearest airbase or airport in serious need of help. According to the agency report, the Union Minister of State of Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, also stated that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's initial report on the Air India crash of 12 June 2025, which was published based on factual information, does not contain any conclusion about the incident and that the investigations are still underway. "Every aspect is being looked into for determining the probable cause(s)/contributory factor(s) leading to the accident," said Mohol, responding to a query on whether the government will investigate the crash from a sabotage angle. Since the year 2022, there has been a 'total of 36 accidents (involving 2 scheduled aircraft, 2 non-scheduled aircraft, 19 trainee aircraft, 2 private aircraft and 11 helicopters)' have been reported, according to the agency report citing the Minister of State on Tuesday.

Punjab DGP reviews anti-drug campaign, security ahead of I-Day
Chandigarh, Aug 5 (PTI) Punjab Police chief on Tuesday chaired a state-level meeting with officers to review the ongoing anti-drug campaign, the overall law and order situation, and the internal security landscape across the state. Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav held meetings with all range inspector generals of police, commissioners of police, and senior superintendents of police. Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla, Special DGP (Intelligence) Praveen Kumar Sinha, ADGP Anti-Narcotics Task Force Nilabh Kishore, ADGP Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) Promod Ban, and ADGP Counter-Intelligence Amit Prasad were also present in the meeting. During the meeting, senior officers briefed the field officers on critical issues such as cross-border drug trafficking, Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, organised crime networks, and key law and order concerns. 'We also reviewed the progress of the state-wide anti-drug campaign 'Yudh Nashian Virudh', launched on March 1, 2025, and discussed strategic interventions to strengthen this ongoing war against drugs," said DGP Yadav in a statement. He asserted that the ANTF's dual approach, aggressive enforcement on the ground and robust, community-led prevention, would create a drug-free and secure Punjab. Sharing the outcome of the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign, he said that the Punjab Police has registered 15,671 FIRs and arrested 24,639 drug smugglers since March 1. Police have recovered 1,020 kg of heroin, 330 kg of opium, 21 tonnes of poppy husk, 14 kg of charas, 377 kg of ganja, 3.3 kg of cocaine, 31.74 lakh intoxicant pills and tablets, and Rs 12.25 crores cash from their possession. During the meeting, the DGP also reviewed the state-wide preparedness for upcoming Independence Day celebrations and directed all field units to remain on high alert and ensure foolproof security arrangements. 'Security arrangements were reviewed and suitable instructions have been given to maintain peace and harmony by ensuring police presence at all important places, intensifying domination operations and other preventive and detective measures ahead of forthcoming Independence Day celebrations," Yadav said. He also directed police officers to conduct a manpower audit of all police establishments and pull out police personnel from non-core duties to ensure a visible police presence, especially in crowded places. He also directed the district police chiefs to increase police checkpoints in their respective jurisdictions and ensure the checking of a maximum number of vehicles. The DGP said apart from the ongoing decisive war against drugs, action against organised crime, gangsters, and Pak-sponsored terror activities has been the Punjab Police's topmost priority and perpetrators in all the major cases have been identified. Meanwhile, police conducted a cordon and search operation (CASO) at and around all the district and sub-divisional courts across the state to ensure foolproof security arrangements at all the judicial complexes. The checking was conducted simultaneously in all the districts of the state. Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said that the police officers were directed to personally monitor this operation and make sufficient numbers of police teams to carry out checking under the supervision of Superintendent of Police rank officers. He said police officers were also asked to conduct checks of all suspicious persons in and around the court complex, besides carrying out checks of all the vehicles parked around the complex by using the Vahan app. He said police teams were also asked to make sure that door frame metal detectors (DFMDs) and CCTV cameras installed at the premises of judicial complexes are functioning. Shukla said police teams have frisked as many as 694 suspicious people found roaming around the court complexes. As many as 1,160 vehicles stationed at different parking places around the court premises were also checked, during which police teams issued 129 challans and impounded four vehicles.
