"Not opposing release of Thug Life, accept SC order," says Karnataka Rakshana Vedike President
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 18 (ANI): Pro Kannada organisation, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike President Praveen Shetty on Wednesday said that the organisation is not opposing the release of actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan's movie Thug Life.
He mentioned that Kamal Haasan should have apologised regarding his comments about the Kannada language being born out of the Tamil language, as per the suggestion of the Karnataka High Court. However, he went to the Supreme Court over the issue, and said that they accept the order of the court.
'We are not opposing the release of the movie 'Thug Life' of Kamal Haasan. It was a simple issue. After hurting the sentiments of Karnataka by saying that the Kannada language has been born out of the Tamil language, he should have apologised as per the suggestions given by the Karnataka HC. But he went to the Supreme Court. Now, the Supreme Court has given an order, so we will accept it. Curbing activism by deploying police is against the Constitution and the law of the land', Praveen Shetty told ANI.
Earlier today, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar appealed to pro-Kannada organisations to abide by the Supreme Court order, which directed the state government to ensure the screening of the Kamal Haasan-starrer movie 'Thug Life'.
Kannada activists have been protesting against the screening of the movie after the 70-year-old actor's comments about the Kannada language sparked a major controversy.On Tuesday, the Supreme Court asked the Karnataka government for an explanation within 24 hours regarding the release of 'Thug Life' in Karnataka.
Reacting to the order, Shivakumar said, 'We should all respect the order given by the court in the Kamal Haasan case. I appeal to pro-Kannada organisations that we should not cross our limits and should be peaceful. No one should take the law into their own hands. Our state is a peace-loving state.' (ANI)

DMK govt installed 11 memorials, 63 statues in four years
Chennai: The DMK govt has installed 63 statues and 11 memorials over the last four years, which is more than double the number of statues erected during the 10 year rule of the previous AIADMK govt. While the DMK govt has installed more than five dozen statues across the state so far, work was underway to construct statues for 28 more leaders and 12 additional memorials, furthering the Dravidian model govt's efforts to preserve and honour the contributions of icons who shaped Tamil identity and history, according to the statement. The statement noted that former chief minister M Karunanidhi was the pioneer in honouring stalwarts. Among the notable structures installed by Karunanidhi was the statue of Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar in 2000 and the govt celebrated 25the anniversary of the statues, recently. Chief minister M K Stalin is continuing the legacy of Karunanidhi by constructing statues for leaders, Tamil scholars and even for leaders from foreign countries who have contributed for the development of Tamil society. Among the statues unveiled by the current govt include Dr B R Ambedkar at the Ambedkar Memorial in Chennai, Col John Pennycuick in England, freedom fighter Anjalai Ammal in Cuddalore and Sir John Marshall, British archaeologist in Egmore. In addition, the house where poet Bharathiyar lived in Varanasi has been converted into a memorial, the statement said.

63 statues installed, 11 manimandapams built in 4 years, says Tamil Nadu government
The DMK government on Sunday said that a total of 63 statues of eminent personalities and leaders had been installed, and 11 manimandapams had been constructed in Tamil Nadu since it assumed office in May 2021. The installation of the statues of 28 other personalities, and the construction of 12 manimandapams were under way, it added. During the 10 years of the erstwhile AIADMK regime, statues were installed for only 25 personalities, an official press release said. It recalled that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin took part in the celebrations marking the completion of 25 years of the 133-foot statue of late Tamil saint-poet Tiruvalluvar in Kanniyakumari in December last year. Subbarayan, Rabindranath Tagore, former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and Anjalai Ammal had been installed, the press release said. The statues of Rao Bahadur Cruz Fernandes, V.P. Singh, Iyothee Thass Pandithar, Veeramamunivar, Namakkal Kavignar, Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar, Sir A.T. Pannirselvam, M.K. With National agencies overburdened, Supreme Court opts for 'special' SITs
The Supreme Court established two special investigation teams (SITs) in May to probe FIRs against Madhya Pradesh minister Kunwar Vijay Shah and Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad. These SITs, composed of IPS officers from outside the respective states, were formed due to concerns about overburdened national agencies and the need for effective investigations. Remove Ads The Supreme Court constituted two special investigation teams (SITs) in two separate cases in May to investigate FIRs registered against Madhya Pradesh minister Kunwar Vijay Shah for his comments against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad for his Facebook post on Operation constituting these SITs, SC passed distinct directions.
