Scheme to introduce 24-hour water supply is on, says Tiruchi Mayor

Mayor M. Anbazhagan on Monday refuted recent criticism by AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and asserted that there was no delay in the execution of projects by the Corporation. Mr. Anbazhagan told the Corporation Council that plans were in place to roll out 24-hour drinking water supply in select parts of the city within a month. 'Efforts are under way to ensure uninterrupted water supply to city residents,' said Mr. Anbazhagan. According to Corporation sources, the 24-hour water supply scheme under the AMRUT 2.0 initiative will be implemented in Ward Nos. 51 to 56 and later expanded to other wards. Responding to the AIADMK's call for a protest on July 3 over alleged delays in civic projects, Mr. Anbazhagan dismissed the claims and said: 'There are challenges related to tendering for shops in Panjapur, among others, but all work will be completed within a month's time.' He said the overbridge near Tiruchi Junction would be ready soon. The delay in the construction of an overbridge near the Fort Railway Station was due to the railways and not the Corporation, he said and urged Mr. Palaniswami to instead take up the matter with the Centre. Based on police department recommendations, repair work on Palakkarai and Thennur Road overbridges would be taken up after completion of the work near Fort Station on Salai Road to avoid traffic disruption. Mr. Anbazhagan said: 'During the AIADMK's tenure, there was no significant progress in underground drainage (UGD) work. It was under the DMK government that substantial UGD work was undertaken and ₹600 crore was allocated to restore roads damaged during the laying of UGD lines. The previous government stopped with mere announcements without allocating the necessary funds.' V. Jawahar (Congress) urged the civic body to build a dedicated toilet complex with bathing facilities for women near the Srirangam temple. S. Suresh (CPI-M) alleged that despite an increase in budget allocations for sanitation contractors, sweepers continue to receive outdated wages. He called upon the Corporation to adhere to the district administration's revised pay structure of ₹717 a day as against the current ₹570. K. Suresh (CPI) sought urgent modernisation of micro composting centres in the Corporation limits noting that workers continue to be exposed to hazardous conditions. S. Muthukumar (MDMK) raised concerns over possible flooding in Azhagiripuram when water was released in the Kollidam. He urged the construction of a retaining wall to safeguard the settlement. Several councillors raised complaints about the increasing stray dog menace noting the deteriorating health of many animals. The Mayor said the Corporation was in talks with Blue Cross and planned to allocate half an acre of land for a facility to shelter diseased or stray animals.

DMK government open about statistics and data: Deputy Chief Minister

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said in Chennai on Monday that while some governments might hesitate or refuse to release statistics and data, the DMK government was open about them and had kept them in the public domain. It provided statistics to the people by undertaking many surveys, he added. Speaking at the 19th National Statistics Day celebrations, he said the DMK government was open about its statistics and data, he said: 'Some governments would hide certain statistics and hesitate to release them. Those statistics may not be favourable to the government. So, they may hide it.' When statistics and data were hidden, researchers worked on social conditions and policy-makers will not get to know the reality, Mr. Udhayanidhi contended. 'But, as far as our government is concerned, we have complete trust in our programmes and actions. That is why we keep all our data in the public domain. Even if there is a dip in the programmes, when it is pointed out, we are willing to rectify things.' A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Department of Economics and Statistics and the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation on imparting training to candidates under the Naan Mudhalvan programme. Mr. Udhyanidhi also handed over prizes to winners who emerged victorious in the State and district-level competitions. State Planning Commission's Executive Vice-Chairperson J. Jeyaranjan and senior officials were present at the function.

25th custodial murder in Tamil Nadu since DMK came to power: AIADMK's Kovai Sathyan on temple guard's death

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 30 (ANI): Following the death of a temple guard from allegedly in police custody in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) spokesperson Kovai Sathyan alleged that this was the 25th custodial murder under Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and there was a blatant cover-up of evidence. Kovai Sathyan said, 'This is not a custodial death. This is the 25th custodial murder since DMK came to power. Ajith Kumar, a security guard with the temple and his brother, who had been called for an inquiry, were exposed to brutality. Ajith Kumar succumbed to the police brutality within the police station itself, and there is a blatant cover-up of evidence that relates to brutality, such as the plastic pipes, chilli powders, and iron rods, which were all removed from the scene. This clearly indicates how rattled the entire scenario is with respect to the police force handling Ajith Kumar.' He alleged that a major cover-up was happening in connection with the death of Ajith Kumar. 'We expect a transparent probe, but however, having known that the last 24 murders, there is no headway, this will be another big cover up from the DMK, but definitely those who are behind will be brought to justice, and AIADMK will stand by those people who demand justice, particularly the Ajith Kumar's family,' the AIADMK leader said Sathyan further said that temporary suspension and transfers to other departments will not work. 'This has to stop. Ajit Kumar was not a history sheeter. He did not have any criminal record. There is no trace that he was unwell,' the AIADMK spokesperson said. Relatives of a Ajit Kumar employed as a security guard at the at the Madapuram Kaliamman temple in Tirupuvanam have alleged that the 28-year-old man died after being beaten and tortured during interrogation by police.. Ajit Kumar was initially detained for questioning regarding a theft at the Madapuram Kaliamman temple, the district Superintendent of Police said. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami condemned the incident and demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter and to provide compensation for Kumar's family. In a post on X, Palaniswami said, 'Ajit Kumar, a security guard at the Madapuram temple in Sivagangai district, was reportedly arrested and interrogated by the Thirupuvanam police following a complaint that he had stolen 9.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery from a female devotee's car. During the interrogation, Ajit Kumar allegedly died due to police assault. His relatives, refusing to accept his body, have launched a protest.' 'Where is the Chief Minister who once wrote a movie review saying, 'I watched Jai Bhim, it shook my heart'? Weren't you the one who blatantly lied even in the State Assembly during the Vignesh lock-up death case? Will we hear the same kind of lies as a response to this case too? If the police believe someone has committed a crime, they must arrest and produce them before the court, following due legal process. they cannot take the law completely into their own hands,' he further said. 'I strongly condemn this puppet Chief Minister who cannot even manage the police force that functions directly under his control. Regarding the death of Ajit Kumar, the temple guard, at the Thirupuvanam police station, I urge this so-called DMK 'Stalin-model' government to immediately form a committee headed by the District Judge to conduct a full investigation, take legal action against those responsible for this death, and provide compensation to the family of the deceased,' Palaniswami said. Sivaganga District SP said that six policemen of the crime branch unit involved in the questioning of Ajith Kumar have been placed under suspension by the District Superintendent of Police and an investigation is underway. Kumar was picked up by police for questioning following a complaint filed by two women, Sivakami and her daughter Nikitha, who alleged that about 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery had gone missing from their car.
