Fever guard Sophie Cunningham unimpressed by WNBA expansion cities. Athletes, owner respond

MINNEAPOLIS — Sophie Cunningham ignited an interstate war with her comments ahead of Tuesday's Commissioner's Cup championship game against the Lynx, questioning why the WNBA would expand to cities like Cleveland and Detroit.
'You want to listen to your players,' the Indiana Fever guard told reporters. 'Where do they want to play? Where are they going to get excited to play and draw fans?"
Cunningham's comments, posted to social media by Yahoo! Sports, were in response to a question about the WNBA's recently announced plans to add franchises in Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia by 2030.
Cunningham, who began her response by citing the importance of creating new opportunities for players, provided a few other options: 'Miami would have been a great one. Everyone loves Florida. Nashville is an amazing city. Kansas City, amazing opportunity. There's a huge arena downtown (Sprint Center) that no one's using. And I think the women's soccer league (in Kansas City) is showing that people draw.'
Cunningham noted the league needs to make sure it's not expanding too quickly, then concluded her comments by saying: 'You don't want teams to totally dominate then have teams that aren't. It's a hard situation, but I don't know how excited people are to go to Detroit or (Cleveland).'
As you can imagine, that bit of commentary — specifically toward the beginning and end of the clip — have created quite the stir on social media, with the two targeted cities weighing in.
The City of Detroit (@CityofDetroit) quote tweeted the video and wrote: 'The last time we were home to a WNBA team (Detroit Shock) we ranked top five in attendance for five straight seasons, No. 1 in attendance for three straight seasons and set a single-game attendance record of 22,076 fans at Game 3 of the 2003 WNBA Finals. Additionally more than 775,000 people were excited to come to Detroit for the 2024 NFL draft. Detroit is a sports town. We're sure we'll see the same excitement for the WNBA returning.'
The admins behind City of Cleveland (@CityofCleveland) were a bit more direct in their response, including a video of one Caitlin Clark singing the city's praises during the 2024 Final Four.
'Sophie, your teammate doesn't seem to think Cleveland is too bad!' they wrote. 'We're proud to have been chosen to host a WNBA team and any player who comes here will feel that legendary passion Cleveland sports fans show our teams!'
Doyel: Caitlin Clark, Fever are rising all boats. So why are WNBA players so intent on sinking them?
It is unclear if or when Kansas City will come to the defense of Cunningham, a Missouri native and proud University of Missouri graduate, but we will continue to monitor the situation.
Meanwhile, other professional athletes, owners and others took issue with Cunningham's comments.

Indiana Fever Fans Slam Stephanie White After Sparks Loss

Indiana Fever Fans Slam Stephanie White After Sparks Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever fans were upset after their team dropped the third game in the last five duels. The Los Angeles Sparks pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Caitlin Clark-led Fever 85-75. The positive things they achieved during the 94-86 win against the Seattle Storm on Tuesday vanished against the Sparks, who gave Indiana its eighth loss of the 2025 WNBA season. Advertisement Stephanie White hasn't had the best start to her tenure as the Fever's head coach. The last three losses have revealed a concerning trend from her team: they struggle to close out games. On Friday, against the Golden State Valkyries, the Fever blew a 12-point lead (57-45 at 3:02 in the third quarter) and ultimately lost the game 88-77. On Sunday, against the Las Vegas Aces, a similar scenario happened. They lost an eight-point lead (50-42 at 6:41 in the third quarter) and the game (89-81). Most recently, on Thursday, they blew a 10-point lead (60-50 at 9:26 in the fourth quarter), resulting in a 10-point loss for the 2012 WNBA champions. It's fair to say that Clark shot 1-of-17 from the field during the losses to the Valkyries and the Aces. However, the lack of composure to close out games continued without the star guard on the court, making fans turn their attention to the coach. Advertisement "Ya better fire Stephanie white today," one fan said. "Don't bring Stephanie White! Bench Howard she can't make a layup and can't play D. Bench Colson she is worthless. Leave Turner in Indy. Don't play KK she has no idea what she is doing out there. Another loss on the horizon. Wasted jet fuel," another fan said. "Steph white should be brought up on coaching malpractice charges. Its so extemely obvious that she trying to ruin this team and doesnt want them to be good at all. She literally doing everything to make them worse. And yall star player caitlin clark looks miserable under her," a third fan added. "Can someone tell me how did the Fever have a better team last year than this year? Why did they break up that team? The team made it to the playoffs and the first thought was let's split up the team. And why is Fever refusing to sign another big," one fan questioned. Advertisement "@IndianaFever Will you please ask Coach White why she feels the need to slow the tempo down as soon as the team hits a 10pt. lead and goes back to trying to run half court. "It is obvious that her team is no good at all trying to run sets because other than AB they have no one else that can post up so teams just crash AB and then it's a hail mary scramble to get a shot off. Thanks!" another said. "Yay time to watch the 5th grade motion offense coach has brought to this team," a fan brutally stated. said. Despite entering the 2025 season with high expectations, the Fever have posted a 7-8 record to start the campaign. They have missed Clark and Sophie Cunningham due to injuries, released DeWanna Bonner, one of their biggest offseason additions and now White is under fire. Advertisement Not exactly the fairy tale many thought this season would be, but the Fever proved last season that they can turn things around at any moment. Sheryl Swoopes Doesn't Hold Back on Paige Bueckers' Coach After Nine Defeats

Sheryl Swoopes Doesn't Hold Back on Paige Bueckers' Coach After Nine Defeats originally appeared on Athlon Sports. WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes didn't mince words when assessing the Dallas Wings' 1-9 start to the 2025 season. Despite losing important players such as Satou Sabally, Kalani Brown and Jaelyn Brown, they went out and brought in new players to reshape their roster and help Arike Ogunbowale. Advertisement Besides making several trades that resulted in other solid players, such as DiJonai Carrington and NaLyssa Smith, joining the team, they also won the draft lottery, which resulted in Paige Bueckers being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft. Their big three of Ogunbowale, Bueckers and Carrington made fans dream about this team's potential, but after 10 games, the Wings have only won one game while looking completely lost on the court in the majority of their games. Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers reacts during a Godfree-Imagn Images During an appearance on "The Women's Hoops Show" on Tuesday, Swoopes talked about the poor performances from the Wings and the Chicago Sky. The legend was dumbfounded that the Texan team hadn't won more than once so far, laying the blame on two people for this situation: head coach Chris Koclanes and general manager Curt Miller. Advertisement "So I am not going to put all of the blame on Chris. No," she said. "Because Curt Miller, this is your hire. I mean, if the GM goes to someone and says, 'hey, will you come be my head coach,' if I really want to coach, I'm not going to say no.' 'Yes, Chris has got to take a lot of the ownership. But so does Curt.' Koclanes had prior experience as an assistant coach at USC, but this was his first chance to coach at the top level. Swoopes implied that this opportunity wasn't earned, but given, suggesting that his friendship with Miller landed him the job. 'It's one thing to be buddies, to be friends, to be whatever, and I get it, trying to look out for your homeboy, your homegirl. But this is about wins and losses.' Advertisement The Wings came off a 9-31 season, which prompted the firing of Latricia Trammell after two campaigns. The 2025 season is still young, and the Indiana Fever showed last year that a 1-9 record can be turned around. They return to action tonight against the Phoenix Mercury, with Bueckers off the injury report after suffering a concussion. Koclanes' performance is raising eyebrows, and if something doesn't change, the season could end in another disaster.
