Cole Escola makes Tony Awards history as first nonbinary best leading actor in a play

Yahoo09-06-2025
Cole Escola made history at the 2025 Tony Awards on Sunday night.
Escola, the deranged genius behind "Oh, Mary!", won best leading actor in a play for their inspired turn as first lady Mary Todd Lincoln. They're now the first nonbinary performer to win in that Tony category.
Channeling Bernadette Peters in an off-the-shoulder Wiederhoeft gown, Escola feverishly sprinted to the stage and thanked fellow best actor nominees including George Clooney and Daniel Dae Kim during the show Sunday, June 8.
"It's an honor to be in your company," Escola said. "It's been a sincere pleasure spending time with you over these warm salads at all these (Tony) luncheons." They continued to thank their mom and their "whole gang" of friends: "Oh, and Tebow from Grindr and Amy Sedaris, who always reminds me how important she is to me. And she is."
Tony Awards biggest moments: Cynthia Erivo holds space, Nicole Scherzinger wins big
Written by Escola, "Oh, Mary!" imagines Lincoln as an alcoholic wannabe cabaret star and her husband, Abraham (Conrad Ricamora), as a closeted, temperamental commander-in-chief. Asked by reporters whether they would consider an Eleanor Roosevelt comedy next, Escola joked that she is "played out. It would have to be something original, not another historical figure."
Review: Believe the hype about Broadway's gloriously irreverent 'Oh, Mary!'
The singular playwright had some choice four-letter words for people who refuse to take chances on queer art; later, they sardonically compared the best actress showdown to a presidential election. ("Four more years!" they deadpanned when Scherzinger won.) But Escola had earnest moments, too, as they looked back at the unlikely phenomenon around "Oh, Mary!"
"Trust that voice that says, 'I think I'm right actually,'" Escola said. "It might take 12 years to put the pen to paper, but that voice is right."
In 2023, "Shucked" scene-stealer Alex Newell and "Some Like It Hot" breakout J. Harrison Ghee had history-making wins as the first nonbinary stars to take home awards during the biggest night in Broadway. Newell took home best featured actor in a musical and Ghee earned best actor in a musical.

One musical had a standout night at the Tonys, which celebrated the biggest in Broadway and featured hosting from Cynthia Erivo and a star-studded "Hamilton" reunion. "Maybe Happy Ending," Will Aronson and Hue Park's musical on two "helperbots" and their journey of friendship, love and adventure, swept the awards with six wins, which included prizes for best musical, best original score, best book of a musical and best scenic design of a musical.

Tiffany Haddish's baby reveal sparks questions: 'What does this mean'

Tiffany Haddish's latest hard launch is stirring up confusion on social media. The 45-year-old comedian on Aug. 3 shared a joint Instagram post with her friend Jason Lee, 47, with a caption that read "Cats out the bag ❤️." Lee has one hand on a stroller and another around Haddish as she carries an infant in her left arm. In a second photo, the two gaze lovingly at the child as he stares straight into the camera's lens. Actress Tasha Smith summed up the sentiment in the comments section by writing: "What does this mean." A few other commenters pointed out that the cat was, in fact, still in the bag due to the lack of context about who the baby was. Haddish had some more fun the next day by posting content from a family Six Flags trip and adding a cheeky caption: "Spent the day at Six Flags with the fam. What'd I miss?" Did Tiffany Haddish have a baby? Makeup artist Rolexis Schinsing joked about being a godmother to this baby in both a comment and an Instagram story that Haddish re-posted. "I finally get to tell everyone about my godchild!! 🤣," she wrote alongside Lee and Haddish's post. Lee, vice mayor of Stockton, California and CEO of the entertainment website Hollywood Unlocked, also shared a photo of Haddish holding the baby boy while visiting a local high school cheer squad practice. However, the little one seems to be Major, the 6-month-old grandson of Lee's cousin, Natasha "Tasha" Brown. In the post, Lee gave a "shoutout to my commissioner Natasha Brown ... for inspiring the young ladies of the South Stockton Vikings cheer squad and giving them the chance to meet Tiffany." USA TODAY has reached out to Haddish's representatives for comment. Haddish, who is currently on her Funny and Fearless Tour, is typically open about her private life, including her fertility struggles and dating updates. In a May appearance on "Late Night with Seth Meyers," she said she was still dating a "roster" of people. She has also spoken about the effect that endometriosis has had on her body, including pain that's allegedly so strong she'd faint – as well as pregnancy loss. In various interviews and as recently as 2024, she told People that she had experienced eight miscarriages, calling them "devastating."

Field of Screams Marks 33 Years of Fear, Family, and Fall Tradition in Lancaster County

Lancaster, PA, Aug. 04, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — What started on a family farm in Lancaster County three decades ago has become one of the most recognized haunted attractions in the country. This fall, Field of Screams celebrates its 33rd season — delivering the same handcrafted scares that made it a fall tradition, while continuing to expand, innovate, and give back. Launched in 1993 by brothers Gene and Jim Schopf, Field of Screams began with a single haunted hayride and a big idea. Today, it features four full-scale attractions — the original Haunted Hayride, the creepy Den of Darkness, the twisted Frightmare Asylum, and the outdoor horror trail, Nocturnal Wasteland. The experience also includes Extreme Blackout, a one-night-only event known for pushing boundaries and attracting horror fans from across the country. 'It's wild to think how far we've come,' said Gene Schopf, co-founder of Field of Screams. 'We never set out to be the biggest or the best — we just wanted to build something memorable. The fact that people come back year after year, some from hours away, is incredibly humbling.' Built by Hand, Night After Night Unlike many seasonal haunts, Field of Screams builds everything on-site — from animatronics and set pieces to sound design and costumes. The result is a completely immersive, evolving experience that changes every year. Each off-season, the creative team develops new scenes, characters, and technical effects to keep things fresh. And behind the scares is a dedicated crew — many of whom have been with the attraction for over a decade — who treat the haunt as more than a job. For them, it's a shared passion that comes to life every fall. 'We have team members who started here as teenagers and now bring their own kids to help out,' said Jim Schopf. 'It's a community, not just a cast.' National Recognition, Local Spirit Field of Screams has been featured by USA Today, The Travel Channel, BuzzFeed, and other national outlets — often landing on top-ten lists for haunted attractions. But even with the media spotlight, the team behind the scenes keeps things grounded. Throughout the years, Field of Screams has partnered with local nonprofits, hosted charity nights, and supported dozens of community causes — from youth sports to local fire departments. The attraction also hosts the Zombie Fun Run, where proceeds help benefit the PA Breast Cancer Coalition. 'At the end of the day, we're part of Lancaster County,' said Gene. 'And we take a lot of pride in that.' Looking Ahead to the 2025 Season Now in its 33rd year, Field of Screams is preparing for another record-breaking season. New attractions and scenes are already in place, and the full calendar of fall events is available on the official website. From first-timers to returning fans, there's something for every level of thrill-seeker. Tickets and details for the 2025 season are available at About Field of Screams Field of Screams is a nationally recognized haunted attraction located in Mountville, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1993, it features four immersive experiences and is known for its original design, local ties, and commitment to giving guests a one-of-a-kind Halloween season. 'The Daily Show' is on hiatus. Here's when it'll return.

Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" is on hiatus, but not for too long. The Emmy and Peabody award-winning late night comedy series is taking an extended break until September during its 30th season. The break comes after Jon Stewart, who propelled to fame during his first stint as host, returned as a one-day-a-week anchor in 2024. Trevor Noah (Stewart's first replacement) bridged most of the gap in hosting duties before leaving the desk in 2022. In addition to Stewart, episodes are hosted by comedians Ronny Chieng, Josh Johnson, Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic and Michael Kosta. Lydic announced the break at the end of the latest episode in July. 'We're going on a production break for August, which was planned months and months ago. So don't freak out," said Lydic, alluding to the abrupt cancellation of fellow late night host Stephen Colbert's "The Late Show" on CBS. "Have a great summer and we'll see you in September when we can all freak out together," Lydic said.
