One of the most iconic sports cars of the postwar era, a remarkably original 1958 BMW 507 Series II Roadster, will be offered at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este Auction on May 24, 2025, by Broad Arrow Auctions. With an estimated value between €2,000,000 and €2,300,000, the car stands out not only for its rarity—just 252 units were built—but for its extraordinary provenance and preservation.
Chassis number 70127 was delivered new in April 1958 to Wilhelm Bartels of Braunschweig, Germany, who gifted it to his 17-year-old wife, Elisabeth. The Federweiss-painted roadster, with a two-tone black and white interior, remained in the Bartels family for an astonishing 46 years. During that time, it was consistently maintained by the same mechanic, who also carried out a front disc brake upgrade—a testament to the meticulous care it received.
Regarded as a design triumph by Albrecht Graf von Goertz, the 507's sculpted aluminum body, paired with a 3.2-liter V8 and four-speed manual transmission, aimed to rival the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. However, its steep price tag—more than twice its projected cost—led to limited production and made it a choice only for the elite. Celebrity owners included Elvis Presley, Alain Delon, and Ursula Andress.
Following its sale by the Bartels family in 2004, the car passed to Horst Kölpin, who preserved its condition while respecting its legacy. In 2018, it entered the hands of only its third owner. Remarkably, just seven kilometers have been added since that transition.
Accompanied by its original German registration document and factory-issued owner's manual, this unrestored example is eligible for premier concours and driving events around the world. It offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most desirable and historically significant BMWs ever built—one with a story as elegant as its design. See it here.

Russell Reportedly Walks Away from Mercedes F1 Offer Due to Verstappen

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. George Russell's Mercedes contract expires at the end of 2025, and a contract extension has yet to be signed. However, according to a report by FUno analisi tecnica, Russell was offered a 1+1 year contract extension until the end of 2026, which he turned down. The report also confirmed that talks between Max Verstappen and Mercedes have reached an advanced stage. Just ahead of last week's Austrian Grand Prix, Russell opened up on the status of his contract, highlighting that detailed discussions have not taken place with team principal Toto Wolff, who has been talking to Verstappen. Russell admitted that he was unbothered by the outcome, given that he had proven his racing prowess and saw no reason why he would not be present on the F1 grid next year. While Wolff acknowledged Russell's contributions, he made it clear that attempts were being made to bring in four-time world champion Verstappen, but it was unlikely that it would happen next year. Guenther Iby/ Images Despite Verstappen's Red Bull contract expiring at the end of 2028, Wolff has been trying hard to bring the Dutchman to the Mercedes camp, especially since 2026 marks the dawn of a new era of regulations with new cars. The Mercedes boss probably intends to capitalize on the big reset next year to replicate the success his team witnessed with Lewis Hamilton in the hybrid era that began in 2014. Verstappen's close Red Bull aide and the team's senior advisor, Helmut Marko, admitted that Verstappen will remain with the team as long as he is handed a car that can win races. However, Red Bull will field its own power units in 2026 in collaboration with Ford under the Red Bull Powertrains banner, a first for the energy drink brand. Mercedes, on the other hand, has a record of developing some of the most powerful F1 engines in the past. Wolff confirmed after the race in Spielberg that there is very little chance of Verstappen being in a Mercedes F1 car next year, thus confirming that Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli will form the 2026 driver lineup. However, the report by the Italian news agency has shed light on Russell's rejection of Mercedes' contract, which was to last until the end of 2026. The report stated: "Russell had been offered a two-year contract (1+1) to ensure that the seat would be available for Verstappen from 2027. This is also why the renewal has stalled. "George wanted more security that apparently can't be there. Furthermore, in the past few weeks, part of the Dutchman's entourage has made several contacts with the German team. It seems that the negotiation is serious and advanced." Related: Toto Wolff Gives Date for George Russell, Max Verstappen Contract Decision

The potential Max Verstappen to Mercedes F1 drama, explained

The F1 summer break may be anything but relaxing for Mercedes and Red Bull this year. Two of the top four teams in the Constructor standings are battling off the track once again, this time for the services of four-time World Champion Max Verstappen. As Red Bull driver's team continues to struggle on the track — most recently with a disaster of a home race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria —rumors of Verstappen leaving Red Bull for one of its biggest rivals are heating up. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes he'll have his 2026 driver lineup set by the end of summer break. He's already confirmed his interest in adding Verstappen. That leaves current Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in complete limbo during F1's silly season. Here's how we got here and everything we know about the situation so far. Why would Max Verstappen leave Red Bull? Yeah, it's best to start with the most obvious question here. Verstappen has been Red Bull's Golden Boy for a decade now. After bursting onto the scene in 2015 as the youngest driver to ever start an F1 race, while with for Red Bull's sister team — then known as Toro Rosso — the son of former F1 driver Jos Verstappen has been one of the sport's hottest commodities, winning four straight drivers titles from 2021-2024. But the 2025 campaign has been more challenging than anyone could've expected. That's partly because McLaren has far and away the best cars on the track this year, and partly because Red Bull's car is simply not up to standard. It seems like every time Max is on the track lately he's complaining about the car being "undrivable". It's not just a problem with Verstappen's car, either. Red Bull's second seat has cycled through multiple drivers the last few years and still faces major issues. Verstappen's current teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, hasn't finished better than 10th in any race this season. And that's after Red Bull swapped in Yuki for Liam Lawson. So, Red Bull's car is a massive problem that won't be resolved any time soon. If Verstappen is going to maximize his prime, his best option might be to get out of a contract that has him locked in with Red Bull until 2028. How Max Verstappen could break his Red Bull contract Red Bull is likely to fight as hard as it can to retain Verstappen, but ultimately Max's contract is a bit easy to break out of, as Sky Sports notes: Verstappen has a clause in his contract that will allow him to leave Red Bull after this season in the scenario he is not in the top four of the Drivers' Championship at the start of the F1 summer break, which follows the Hungarian Grand Prix on August 3. Verstappen is currently third in the standings, nine points ahead of Russell and 36 points in front of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc with three rounds until the summer break. A maximum of 83 points can be won across those three events, with Belgium being a Sprint weekend." Following the Austria Grand Prix — which saw Verstappen forced to retire after a collision with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli on Lap 1 — here's how things look with the drivers standings: Given how Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren have performed recently, it wouldn't be a surprise if Max and Red Bull continue tumbling down the table. Especially considering the usually aggressive Verstappen has to avoid accumulating penalty points or risk a suspension. That's all the opening Wolff and Mercedes need to poach the 27-year-old. Aren't Verstappen and Red Bull massive rivals with Mercedes? They sure are! The delicious messiness of Formula One drama never ceases to amaze. Verstappen previously had an intense rivalry with then-Mercedes champion driver Lewis Hamilton from 2016-2023 as the two battled for world titles. Now Verstappen finds himself in an ongoing tangle with Mercedes' top driver George Russell. Add to that the fact Mercedes drives and Verstappen have collided with each other over the last few races, throw in a dash of public tampering and you've got a wildly combustible situation. What about the current Mercedes drivers? George Russell's contract is up after this year. Many assumed a new deal would be struck following his emphatic victory at the Canadian Grad Prix, but no decision has been made yet. Antonelli is on a one-year deal — though certain performance results can reportedly trigger an extension. Wolff has previously said Antonelli "will probably need a three-year program. That's how long a young driver needs to challenge a more experienced and faster teammate. But we would never have entrusted the seat to a driver who we don't consider a potential world champion." The 18-year-old who joined Mercedes following Hamilton's departure for Ferrari earned his first podium in Canada. What has Mercedes' Toto Wolff said about the Verstappen pursuit? Per ESPN: Wolff has insisted that his monitoring of the Verstappen situation has no bearing on his ongoing discussions with Russell. Speaking after Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix, Wolff said he wants the situation around Russell resolved during the four-week break. "You need to be respectable towards the stakeholders in all of that process," he said. "The organization, the drivers, everybody. You need to understand the way forward. "And I don't want to be sadistic in letting a driver wait or not taking any decisions when it should be taken. So I feel we're in a good space. We're [in] June. "Obviously there's lots of discussions around. I've been open with it and transparent. And at a certain stage in the next couple of months -- until the summer break, we need to know. Until the summer break, everything is going to be done." What has Red Bull's Christian Horner said about Mercedes' pursuit of Verstappen? Here's what Horner told Sky Sports F1 in Austria: 'It is a lot of noise, and I think Max gets quite annoyed by it. We are very clear with the contract we have with Max until 2028. Anything is entirely speculative that has been said. We tend to not pay too much attention to it. 'I can imagine George is frustrated that he hasn't been given a contract yet, but that's between him and his team. The situation with Max – we know clearly where we are at, as does Max. Everything is subject to noise and obviously within the contract remains confidential to the two parties.' What does Mercedes' pursuit of Verstappen mean for the rest of the F1 grid? Normally when three drivers are battling for two seats, there's the possibility of one getting booted from the grid entirely. That may not be the case this year. With Cadillac joining F1 as the eleventh team next season, there are two new seats becoming available. So even if Antonelli or Russell end up losing their spot at Mercedes after this season, it doesn't mean they are out of options. In fact, there are more lineup possibilities than ever for 2026.

Musk Suffers New Blow as Tesla Sales Drop for Second Quarter

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Elon Musk's Tesla reported another decline in deliveries in the second quarter, deepening the electric vehicle company's slump after a slower start to the year. Newsweek reached out to Tesla's press team via email for comment. Why It Matters Musk, once a vocal supporter and informal adviser to President Donald Trump, has stepped away from his government role leading the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and returned to focus on his companies, including Tesla. Musk and Trump's public split and fallout included character jabs as well as policy disagreements, including Trump's prized "big, beautiful" bill, which seeks to make the 2017 tax cuts permanent while cutting Medicaid funding and ending electric vehicle tax credits. Musk enjoys numerous lucrative contracts with the government across companies, including SpaceX, which Trump has threatened to revoke. The drop in sales and deliveries may signal an extended consumer backlash against the Tesla brand. Protests and vandalism targeting Tesla, which began in response to Musk's time in the Trump administration, have continued since his departure. What To Know On Wednesday, Tesla reported its second-quarter production and delivery figures, producing 410,244 vehicles, primarily Model 3 and Model Y cars, and delivering 384,122. Deliveries are considered a proxy for sales. The figures are about 14 percent lower than in the second quarter of 2024, when Tesla produced 410,831 vehicles and delivered 443,956. The second-quarter findings are also lower than those of the first quarter of 2025, which reported 362,615 vehicles produced and 336,681 deliveries, representing a decline of approximately 13 percent from the first quarter of 2024. The first-quarter slump coincided with Musk's formal affiliation with the president and his appointment to the DOGE position. AP Photo/Chuck Burton This quarter, production and deliveries increased from the first quarter but remained below the levels of a year earlier. The numbers represent a longer three-year decline in sales. In Europe, Tesla sales have dropped notably, with the company selling 8,729 vehicles in the European Union last month, a 40.5 percent decrease from the 14,682 sold in May 2024, according to data released on Wednesday by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Musk has also been pursuing a political agenda in Europe, with recent interventions in the German election and British politics. The electric vehicle market has become increasingly saturated since Tesla's inception, with numerous other manufacturers now producing hybrid electric cars, including BYD, BMW, Volkswagen, and others. In addition to its fleet, Tesla is also focusing on its robotaxi, self-driving service. What People Are Saying Tesla CEO Elon Musk, during a conference call in April, said he was "extremely optimistic about the future of the company," which will be "fundamentally based on large-scale autonomous cars and large-scale—being large volume—vast numbers of autonomous humanoid robots." Musk continued: "The value of a company that makes truly useful autonomous humanoid robots and autonomous useful vehicles at scale, at low cost—which is what Tesla is going to do—is staggering. I continue to believe that Tesla, with excellent execution, will be the most valuable company in the world by far." President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday: "We might have to put DOGE on Elon," adding that "DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon." What Happens Next Tesla remains one of the largest suppliers of electric vehicles in the world, but competitors have taken note of the disappointing numbers and are likely to move to secure a greater market share. On Tuesday, Trump noted that he will "have to take a look" into deporting Musk, who was born in South Africa and became a naturalized United States citizen more than two decades ago.
