GCC to vaccinate 1L dogs against rabies
The civic body aims to vaccinate an average of 3,000 dogs a day across the city. Until now, only sterilized stray dogs were routinely immunised through animal birth control (ABC) centres . With this special drive, GCC plans to widen coverage to include unsterilised stray and pet dogs to break the chain of rabies transmission.
"To ensure Chennai is free from rabies, several measures have been taken, including sterilization and vaccination.
A recent survey revealed that over 1.8 lakh stray dogs live in the city. So far, only sterilised dogs at ABC centres have been vaccinated. We aim to immunize the remaining stray dogs through this special mass vaccination camp starting Aug 7 (Thursday)," said J Kamal Hussain, veterinary officer, GCC.

The corporation will begin the drive in three zones , eventually expanding to all other zones. Ten trained teams will carry out the vaccinations, with each team expected to vaccinate at least 100 dogs a day.
Kamal added, "The rabies vaccination will also include protection against four other major diseases — canine distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, and leptospirosis. Additionally, Endectoparasiticide will help prevent ticks and other parasite infections in dogs. We expect to vaccinate at least one lakh dogs through this special camp." Notably, the city records an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 dog bite cases annually.
During a recent monthly council meeting, ward councillors urged Corporation officials to regularize the administration of anti-rabies vaccines for stray dogs, citing the surge in their population.
"Sterilization alone is not enough and does not prevent dog bites. After surgery, dogs are released back into the same areas, posing a threat to the public. Many stray dogs remain unvaccinated. Authorities must ensure strict implementation of these measures," said Fathima Ahamed, councillor of ward 61.
Animal lovers have welcomed the move to vaccinate dogs after a long gap. "If the vaccination camp had been conducted earlier, a wider range of dogs could have been covered. Vaccinating both stray and pet dogs will help reduce human-animal conflict," said Arun Prasanna, an animal activist.

No disrespect: Clerics from all faith endorse organ donation
Lucknow: In a bid to address the critical shortage of organ donors amidst rising demand for kidneys, livers, and hearts, Dr Narayan Prasad, head of the renal transplant program at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), debunked the myth that organ donation mutilates or disrespects the deceased. This misconception, he emphasized, deters people from embracing this life-saving act. Last year, SGPGIMS performed around 170 transplants. Yet, across India, over three lakh patients — including two lakh needing kidneys and 50,000 awaiting liver or heart transplants — remain in urgent need. In Uttar Pradesh alone, 600–700 transplants are done annually, but the demand far exceeds the supply. Dr Prasad said, "One of the most persistent misconceptions in our society is that organ donation leads to mutilation or disrespect of the deceased. This is a vicious myth," he said. "Organ retrieval is done with utmost dignity. It's time we stop letting misinformation cost lives." "In 2024, nearly 24,000 people died in road accidents in UP. If just 1% had donated organs, we could have saved 960 lives," he noted. Model school plans tours, steps to de-stress students
Trichy: Stunned by two student suicides in two months, govt model school authorities in Trichy are planning to undertake a series of stress management measures like recreational trips and counselling for students. Most of the students reside in the hostel to prepare for competitive exams along with their regular classes. Officials said initially 55 Class XII students, who are also CLAT (Common law admission test) aspirants, will be taken on a day's trip to Thanjavur next week. "Both the students who died by suicide recently were CLAT aspirants. For now, this group has complained more of stress. However, we will gradually identify students in other streams and proceed accordingly," an official source told TOI. A targeted approach would be adopted to prevent further such incidents. The school currently has about 520 students also getting coached across various streams of competitive exams. "To blame the school administration or the nature of coaching as a reason for stress is unfair," said the official. On Thursday, Class XII student B Yuvraj from Vellore had hanged himself in his hostel room. Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi had paid a visit to the school on Friday and advised more care. In June, a girl named D Krithiga from Thiruvallur also died by suicide in her hostel room. The school with state-of-the-art infrastructure was built at a cost of Rs57 crore to exclusively train students for clearing competitive exams. It was inaugurated by chief minister M K Stalin on May 8. Suicides in other govt schools have also been recorded this year. A class XII student was also found hanging in the hostel of the blind school in Puthur in March.
