[UPDATED] IGP: Police to facilitate peaceful assembly at Dataran Merdeka
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said that maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of all participants were among the force's top priorities.
"The police respect the constitutional right of Malaysians to gather and express their views peacefully, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
"As a law enforcement agency that upholds the Constitution, we respect the people's right to voice their opinions and assemble in a peaceful and orderly manner, in line with the democratic values practised in this country," he said in a statement today.
Khalid added that the police would act as facilitators to ensure the assembly proceeds smoothly, safely, and with due respect to public spaces shared by all.
"We are committed to facilitating this event to ensure the assembly is carried out in a safe and organised manner.
"We greatly appreciate the cooperation of all parties in maintaining harmony throughout the event," he said, advising participants to remain mindful of existing laws and to cooperate in maintaining order and public safety.
He hoped that every voice expressed during the assembly was done respectfully, in keeping with the values of civility and Malaysian cultural norms.
Khalid also urged members of the public not involved in the gathering to plan their journeys early and monitor traffic updates, as traffic flow around Dataran Merdeka was expected to be affected.
"To avoid inconvenience or delays, we advise road users to make early travel arrangements as some traffic diversions may be in place.
"We assure the public that the police will maintain public safety while continuing to respect the rights and freedoms of the people.
"We believe a balance between democratic freedoms and the rule of law can be achieved through close cooperation and shared responsibility," he said, calling on all parties to conduct themselves with maturity and to use the democratic space available constructively and responsibly.
"Let us work together to ensure that every opportunity for democratic expression is used positively, for the benefit of national harmony and the well-being of our society," he said.
It was recently reported that Kuala Lumpur police would deploy additional personnel at 15 transit stations in anticipation of the Turun Anwar rally scheduled for Saturday.
Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad was reported as saying the move was aimed at ensuring public safety, particularly for commuters using public transport that day.
Transport operators have also agreed to station additional personnel for the same purpose.
The 15 stations are:
LRT Stations: KL Sentral, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek, Dang Wangi, Plaza Rakyat, Bandaraya, Sultan Ismail
MRT Stations: Muzium Negara, Merdeka, Bukit Bintang
Monorail Stations: Imbi, Raja Chulan, Bukit Nanas, Medan Tuanku, Chow Kit
Police have received information that the demonstration, which is expected to attract between 10,000 and 15,000 participants, will include representatives from various non-governmental organisations (NGOs), university students, and members of the public.

Nurul Izzah Calls On Bangladesh Interim Government Chief
WORLD By Shakir Husain NEW DELHI, July 27 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar called on Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on Sunday. Yunus, during the meeting, sought Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). "We want to become a part of ASEAN, and we will need your support," he told Nurul Izzah, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. Bangladesh applied to become an ASEAN sectoral dialogue partner in 2020. Yunus also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Bangladesh's growing economy. "Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under the age of 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh. It will help both our economies," he said. The interim government's chief advisor informed the PKR deputy chief about Bangladesh's political reforms following last year's uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule. Nurul Izzah spoke at Dhaka University on Sunday at a conference marking the first anniversary of the July Revolution.

Strive for change to the best of one's ability, Anwar reminds PKR members
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) members to hold firmly to the call for islah mastata'tum, meaning to strive for change to the best of one's ability. Anwar, who is also PKR president, said this during a meeting with Federal Territories PKR members in Putrajaya today. "We may not be able to achieve everything in the blink of an eye, but we will continue to advance the reform agenda step by step," he said in a Facebook post. He said the Federal Territories have long stood as one of the strongholds of PKR's struggle, but the party's strength would only be meaningful if it continued to be grounded in core values and grassroots efforts. "Divisions must remain active through programmes that truly engage with the people, regardless of race, age or background," he said. Anwar, who is also finance minister, said that in charting the path forward, criticisms and reminders must be welcomed in the spirit of the struggle. "I thank all who gathered (for the rally in the federal capital) yesterday as it was conducted peacefully. "I am always open to criticism and feedback, although I'm slightly disappointed that no substantive issues were raised. "All we heard was one chant: "Turunkan Anwar" (Step down, Anwar)." "The Opposition Leader is said to be planning to table a motion of no confidence. By all means. "This is a democracy. It is a legitimate process. "If there are sufficient numbers, just bring it to parliament," he said. The prime minister added that he has never claimed the Madani government is perfect, nor is he arrogant about correcting its shortcomings. "What is lacking, we will improve. What remains unresolved, we will continue to work on. "But reform must be implemented in phases so that it can be accepted, understood, and sustained," he said. He said the government has also taken bold and rational steps to ensure that the nation's funds benefit the majority and help ease cost-of-living pressures, without compromising the country's economic fundamentals. "We reduced the price of RON95 petrol to RM1.99 for Malaysians by removing subsidies for foreigners. "Ultimately, PKR must remain a party of the future, a party open to criticism, mature in its actions, and united in purpose. "We are not perfect. But we are sincere. "And as long as there is sincerity and the will to improve, we will continue to move forward beyond those who only know how to shout without direction or solutions," he said. – Bernama
