'America Party is formed': Elon Musk targets House, Senate seats; aims to sway narrow Congressional votes
A day after asking his followers on X about forming a new political party in the US,
Elon Musk
announced on Saturday that the "America Party" has been established.
"Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."
Elon Musk's announcement comes shortly after President Donald Trump signed a tax-cut and spending bill into law on Friday, a move the Tesla CEO strongly opposed.
The new political party that Musk has pledged, may begin by targeting a select number of winnable House and Senate seats, aiming to hold the balance of power on key issues given the narrow margins in Congress.
In a post following his poll Musk said, 'One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,' who played a central role in federal budget cuts after Donald Trump's second term began in January.
'Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring they serve the true will of the people.'
Though, he didn't specify which seats he may be eyeing.
The spending bill passed the House by a narrow 218-214 margin, with only two Republicans siding with Democrats, who were ultimately unable to block it. In the Senate, a 50-50 tie was broken by Vice-President JD Vance, allowing the bill to pass just hours before Donald Trump signed it into law.

The razor-thin margins in both chambers highlight how just a handful of seats could swing critical legislative outcomes, an opening Elon Musk appears to be targeting with his newly announced party.
On Friday, as the US marked its 249th Independence Day, Elon Musk posted a poll on X asking followers whether he should move forward with his earlier proposal to launch the America Party as an alternative to both Republicans and Democrats. By Saturday morning, over 1.25 million users had responded, with more than 65% voting in favor of the idea.
'Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system!,' Musk added in the post.

Saudis Raise Main Oil Prices for Asia a Day After OPEC Hike
(Bloomberg) -- Saudi Arabia raised prices for its main crude grade for buyers in Asia next month as demand for oil and fuels holds up. The move, a day after OPEC producers agreed to a fourth round of big output hikes, suggests the kingdom is confident about the market. State producer Aramco will raise the price for Arab Light crude, its flagship grade, by $1 a barrel to $2.20 a barrel more than the regional benchmark for Asian customers, according to a price sheet from the company seen by Bloomberg. Three refinery officials in Asia expressed their surprise at the size of the increase. Aramco was expected to raise Arab Light by 65 cents a barrel, according to a survey of traders and refiners. On Saturday, the Saudis on Saturday led the OPEC group, which includes partners like Russia, in agreeing to raise production by 548,000 barrels a day in August, in part to take advantage of strong summer consumption. The increase, faster than traders and analysts foresaw, may contribute to a crude surplus later this year with Wall Street firms such as JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. anticipating that prices sink near $60 a barrel in the fourth quarter. The OPEC increase puts the group on pace to unwind the layer of voluntary output cuts by eight members by September, which is one year earlier than originally outlined. The countries had announced increases of 411,000 barrels for each of May, June and July — already three times faster than scheduled. Read: OPEC Will Boost Supply Even Faster With Larger August Hike (2) Oil spiked above $80 a barrel last month as Israel exchanged missile barrages with Iran in one of the most dramatic escalations of conflict in the Middle East in recent years. Markets had largely shrugged off prior geopolitical tensions linked to Israel's war in Gaza and attacks on Hezbollah as those conflicts failed to impede the flow of oil. While a wider war involving Iran could put energy production and export infrastructure at risk, Brent crude fell back below $70 a barrel soon after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Tehran and Jerusalem and limited the US involvement in attacks. Demand for crude and products has largely held up amid summer use with margins for refiners rising. Still, traders see the market softening later this year as consumption wanes and the OPEC increases contribute to a surplus of crude in storage. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies are set to bring back to market 2.2 million barrels a day overall this year once it unwinds the voluntary cuts. --With assistance from Alex Longley and Alaric Nightingale. Who is Vaibhav Taneja? Meet Indian-origin Tesla CFO selected by Elon Musk as Treasurer for his America Party
Indian-origin Vaibhav Taneja, Tesla's Chief Financial Officer, has emerged as a pivotal figure in Elon Musk's newly announced political venture, the America Party (AMEP). A recent Federal Election Commission (FEC) filing revealed that Taneja is formally listed as both the Custodian of Records and Treasurer for Elon Musk's America Party, underscoring the depth of trust Musk places in his top financial lieutenant. According to his LinkedIn profile, Taneja has worked at Tesla for more than eight years, steadily ascending to the company's highest financial post: Chief Financial Officer (CFO) — August 2023 to Present; Based in Austin, Texas Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) — March 2019 to Present Corporate Controller — May 2018 to March 2019 Assistant Corporate Controller — February 2017 to May 2018 Before joining Tesla, he served a year at SolarCity, the solar energy company Musk co-founded, and nearly 17 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, advising Fortune 500 clients on financial controls and IPO preparation. Taneja is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Chartered Accountant, with deep experience in: US GAAP financial reporting SEC compliance and regulatory filings Internal controls and audit oversight Supporting C-suite leaders and boards of directors Guiding companies through IPOs and major public offerings Streamlining business processes to prevent revenue leakage His educational background includes a Bachelor of Commerce from Delhi University and chartered accountancy credentials from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Taneja has worked closely with Musk throughout Tesla's rapid global expansion. In his CFO and CAO roles, he is a trusted steward of Musk's companies' finances, including the preparation of official filings, audits, and compliance disclosures. His selection as Treasurer and Custodian of Records for the America Party signals that Musk is relying on Taneja's proven ability to handle high-stakes, highly scrutinized regulatory and financial matters. The filing comes after Elon Musk's fallout with Donald Trump, a former close ally. Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he launched the America Party to challenge what he called America's 'one-party system.' 'Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,' Musk declared. 'When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.' On July 1, shortly after the tax and spending bill was passed in the Senate, Musk wrote on X, formerly Twitter: 'If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day. Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.' Musk, who once headed Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and was a major donor to Trump's 2024 campaign, broke ties after criticising Trump's tax and spending bill. The fallout has led to threats from Trump, who warned the government might reconsider its contracts with Musk's companies. Taneja's involvement in the America Party is the clearest sign yet that Musk intends to run the movement with the same tight circle of trusted executives who helped build Tesla and SpaceX. As Treasurer, Taneja will be responsible for handling political contributions, regulatory filings, and compliance with federal election laws, adding an unprecedented new dimension to his long career in corporate finance.
