Egyptian president follows up on initiatives to counter extremist thought
The president met with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Awqaf Minister Usama Al-Azhari, who presented a report on the ministry's initiatives.
Al-Azhari briefed the president on the 'Correct Your Concepts' awareness initiative, which he described as a cornerstone of the ministry's strategy to build enlightened religious and societal awareness. The initiative aims to correct misconceptions and counter forms of non-religious extremism that contribute to the decline of values and ethics in society.
President Al-Sisi directed the continuous follow-up of the initiative's implementation mechanisms to ensure its national objectives are met, in coordination with state institutions and civil society.
The president also followed up on the latest developments in formulating a strategic vision for renewing religious discourse. Al-Azhari explained that the strategy consists of four main pillars: confronting religious extremism in all its forms, confronting all forms of non-religious extremism represented by the decline of values and negative behaviours, human development, and civilization building.
The minister presented the 'Renewal of Religious Discourse' document, which includes executive measures for each of the previous pillars, aiming to formulate a rational religious discourse that promotes values of peace, security, and tolerance.
Al-Azhari also presented the ministry's new digital platform, which is part of its efforts to counter extremist thought and enhance awareness. The platform includes various sections covering different aspects of Islamic and encyclopedic sciences, as well as initiatives to rationalise behaviour and address negative phenomena in society such as bullying, harming people with disabilities, drug abuse, and vandalism of public property.
The minister also discussed future plans to develop the platform, including converting its content into visual and audio formats for social media and utilising artificial intelligence technologies.
The meeting also covered the latest developments in the 'Al-Aswat' (The Voices) competition, which aims to discover the best voices in Quranic recitation, religious invocations, and chanting.
The Egyptian President directed continued coordination with the relevant authorities to enhance the capabilities of imams, qualify distinguished personnel capable of facing challenges and improving the level of religious discourse, and develop communication mechanisms, especially in combating extremist thought and consolidating awareness of contemporary issues.

During his call with his Greek counterpart, the Egyptian FM addressed the latest developments in Libya, where both sides stressed the utmost importance of holding presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously at the earliest possible opportunity. They also stressed the necessity of dismantling militias and the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries, considering this the only guarantee to achieve security and stability in Libya. During the call, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's steadfast commitment to protecting religious sanctities, including Saint Catherine's Monastery. He emphasised the state's commitment to protecting and preserving the monastery's sacred religious status, as well as refraining from encroaching on its associated archaeological sites, given their spiritual value and religious standing. Egypt's PM reviews efforts to support local pharmaceutical industry
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Sunday chaired a meeting to review efforts to support and develop the country's pharmaceutical industry, with the aim of boosting local manufacturing and attracting more foreign investment. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Minister of Finance, Ahmed Kouchouk, and the heads of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) and the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement (UPA). Madbouly affirmed the government's interest in providing all necessary support for the growth and localisation of this vital industry. He noted that Egypt has a long history in pharmaceuticals, with large industrial facilities, and possesses promising advantages for further progress, including a large domestic market and access to nearby regional markets. During the meeting, EDA Chairman Ali El-Ghamrawy presented a report on the state of the industry. He stated that the sector is nationally stable and has achieved significant jumps in local market sales in 2024 compared to 2023, with positive expectations for continued growth in 2025. El-Ghamrawy confirmed that there is a secure level of coverage for various therapeutic groups, including hormones, cardiovascular drugs, oncology products, and corticosteroids. He also assured that there is a safe strategic stock of pharmaceutical raw materials, sufficient for three to six months. The EDA chairman highlighted the growth of foreign companies in the Egyptian market, noting that their sales in 2024 saw a 43% increase compared to 2023. He attributed this progress to several measures taken by the EDA to attract international firms, including monitoring modern and innovative products, a reference-based registration process that reduces approval times from two years to as little as two months, a unified electronic registration system, and support for localisation projects. El-Ghamrawy also noted that the EDA provides about 979 essential regulatory services to support the pharmaceutical industry and has not increased the fees for these services in the past two years.
