Journeyman Sikandar Raza blasts Lahore Qalandars to Pakistan Super League title
The 39-year old Zimbabwean landed in Lahore just ten minutes before the toss, after scoring a half century in his country's innings defeat in the Nottingham Test against England a day before.
Needing 13 in the last over to complete a 202-run chase set by Quetta, Raza completed the task during his seven-ball 22 not out with two sixes and as many boundaries.
He hit a maximum and a four in the last over to seal the victory with one ball remaining.
Sri Lankan Kusal Perera led the chase with an undefeated 31-ball 62 studded with five boundaries and four sixes, adding 59 runs during the unbroken fifth wicket stand.
Opener Mohammad Naeem scored 46, with half a dozen sixes and one boundary, and Abdullah Shafique hit 41 to set Lahore on course for the highest-ever chase in a PSL final.
Lahore sealed their third title following triumphs in 2022 and 2023.
Raza said it was unbelievable to reach Lahore and achieve success.
'It is unbelievable, batted for 40-odd overs in the Test, flew to Dubai where I had breakfast and then lunch in Abu Dhabi and arrived minutes from the toss, so it's incredible,' he said.
Hasan Nawaz scored a brilliant 76 to lift Quetta to 201-9 after they won the toss and batted.
Coming in at 21-2, Nawaz added 67 for the fourth wicket with Avishka Fernando (29) and another 46 with Dinesh Chandimal (22) to steady the ship.
Lahore skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi was the pick of Lahore's bowlers with 3-24.
It was Faheem Ashraf (28) who lifted Quetta past 200, taking 23 off the last Salman Mirza over.
The six-team PSL was suspended on May 9 following the conflict between Pakistan and India.
However, the league resumed on May 17 after a ceasefire between the two countries.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar this week apologized to Karate champion Shahzaib Rind for the 'unjustified delay' of a monetary reward and financial support the fighter said the government had promised to provide him, sharing that the prime minister has taken 'serious notice' of the incident. Rind made history in September last year when he won the World Karate Combat Light Heavyweight Championship, beating Brazil's Luiz Victor Rocha in the final in Singapore. The remarkable feat made him the first person from Pakistan to win the world title. Following his achievement, Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari presented Rind a cheque of Rs100 million [$352,600] while as per reports, former federal minister Sardar Yaar Muhammad Rind announced he would give Rind 25 acres of land. Rind took to social media platform X on July 23, saying that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif promised him a sum of Rs5 million [$17,630] and Rs80 million [$282,080] to support his training camp and upcoming fights. However, the Pakistani fighter said it was 'all a lie, I never got a penny from them.' 'Dear Shahzeb, there seems to be some miscommunication,' Tarar wrote to Rind on X on Saturday. 'We sincerely apologize for this unjustified delay, sportsmen like you are our real heroes and we value your achievements.' The minister acknowledged that Rind had brought honor to the country and made everyone proud through his achievements. 'The Prime Minister has taken serious notice of this inordinate delay and rest assured, it will be sorted out immediately, inshallah [god willing],' Tarar added. Chinese 12-year-old swimmer yu zidi makes her debut on world stage -- and doesn't disappoint
The globe got its first look on Sunday at 12-year-old Chinese prodigy swimmer Yu Zidi making her debut at the swimming world championships. She did not disappoint on the opening day of the eight-day competition in the pool in Singapore. Yu, who has been swimming astounding times in China, clocked 2 minutes 11.90 seconds in the 200-meter individual medley to advance to the semifinals. Her time was the 15th fastest of the 16 qualifiers. Her time was a bit off her season-best time of 2:10.63. Yu will swim three events in Singapore including the 400 IM and the 200 butterfly. The 200 IM is probably her weakest event. Her times in the butterfly and 200 IM in the recent Chinese championships are among the best in the world this season. Her best times in those two events would have been good for fourth place last year in the Paris Olympics. World Aquatics, the governing body of world swimming, has an age limit of 14. However, swimmers are allowed to compete if they are younger if their times surpass a qualifying standard. Yu wore a black cap and a gray suit and did not speak after the race.

Emailed job application supposedly from Xavi was bogus, Indian soccer federation says
India's soccer federation has dispelled speculation Xavi Hernández had applied to coach its national team, saying the job application it apparently received from the former Barcelona player was bogus. The All India Football Federation said Saturday that it had received emailed job applications from senders claiming to be Xavi and Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola, but that neither was genuine. Indian media reported that Xavi had applied for the role. Xavi has been without a team since being let go by Barcelona in June 2024. Guardiola, one of the top coaches in the sport, is under contract with City through June 2027. India is looking to replace Spanish coach Manolo Márquez after he left the position by mutual consent earlier this month following just one win in eight games and less than a year in the job. The federation said Saturday that it has narrowed a group of 170 applicants to three unnamed finalists.
