PM Modi Honoured With 'Key To The City Of Buenos Aires' During Argentina Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday, was felicitated with the 'Key to the City of Buenos Aires', a symbolic ceremonial honour, during his official two-day state visit in Argentina, recognising his contribution in strengthening the ties between India and the South American country.

"A symbol of trust & friendship. PM @narendramodi was presented with the 'Key to the City of Buenos Aires' by Mr. Jorge Macri, Head of the City Government of Buenos Aires, Argentina. This ceremonial honour is in recognition of PM's contributions in strengthening the India-Argentina ties," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a social media post on X.
This visit by PM Modi was historic because it was the first time in 57 years that an Indian Prime Minister came to Argentina for bilateral talks. Hundreds of Indian community members cheered PM Modi outside his hotel, waving flags and dancing to Indian music.
PM Modi's Argentina stop was part of a bigger five-country tour where he collected major awards.
Before this, in Trinidad and Tobago, the Prime Minister received "The Order of the Republic", their highest civilian honour.
He is the first foreign leader ever to receive it. During that visit, both countries signed six agreements to work more closely together. PM Modi thanked Trinidad for honouring him and said the award wasn't just for him but for all 1.4 billion Indians.
Prior to receiving this honour, Prime Minister Modi also paid his tribute to the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires after concluding high delegation-level talks with Argentina's President Javier Milei.
While paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi -- Father of the Nation of India here, the Prime Minister said that Gandhiji's timeless vision and noble ideals will always guide humanity and taking inspiration from him India is committed to build a just and compassionate world.

PM Modi also paid his homage to legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore here, saying that India takes immense pride in the contributions of Tagore toward its history and culture, adding that his focus on learning and education is highly motivational.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi commenced his official visit to Argentina by offering his tribute to General Jose de San Martin, Argentina's Father of the Nation.
The Prime Minister visited Plaza San Martin and laid a wreath at the memorial, the MEA said in a press statement.
He paid respects to General Jose de San Martin, recognising his enduring legacy as the liberator of Argentina and several other South American nations, the MEA statement added.
India cherishes his contribution and the values he stood for.
"Paid homage to General Jose de San Martin in Buenos Aires. His courage and leadership played a pivotal role in Argentina's history. His life remains a symbol of patriotism and determination for the people of Argentina." PM Modi said on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, held comprehensive delegation-level talks with Argentina's President Javier Milei, describing the meeting as "excellent", adding that both countries had made significant progress in further enhancing the bilateral ties.

During the meeting, the two leaders reviewed ongoing cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to building an even stronger partnership.
PM Modi noted that while substantial progress has been made, the future holds even greater promise for collaboration.
"President Milei and I discussed how to diversify commercial ties, cooperation in agriculture, defence, security, energy, and more. There is a vast field of action in areas such as pharmaceuticals and sports," PM Modi wrote in another post on his official X account.
The discussions focused on diversifying trade and enhancing cooperation in key sectors such as agriculture, defence, energy, and security.
After Argentina, PM Modi will join the BRICS summit in Brazil and then visit Namibia. PM Modi and President Milei agreed to boost cooperation in important areas during their talks. Argentina will supply lithium (a key mineral for electric car batteries) and shale gas to India.
This helps India's energy security plans. Argentina has the world's second-largest shale gas reserves. PM Modi also asked for easier entry of affordable Indian medicines into Argentina. The Prime Minister warmly interacted with the crowd and expressed his appreciation for their love and support.
Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, "Distance is no barrier when it comes to cultural connect! Honoured by the gracious welcome from the Indian community in Buenos Aires."
He further shared his enthusiasm for the visit, adding, "Landed in Buenos Aires for a bilateral visit which will focus on augmenting relations with Argentina. I'm eager to be meeting President Javier Milei and holding detailed talks with him."
The visit not only highlights India's growing global partnerships but also the emotional and cultural ties that unite Indians around the world.

Ex-CJIs endorse constitutionality of 'one nation, one election' concept but flag issues with bill
Two former CJIs, UU Lalit and Ranjan Gogoi, had appeared before the committee in February and March, respectively. During the interaction, Gogoi agreed with the concerns of some members over the excessive power given to the EC, sources have said. Lalit had suggested that simultaneous polls should be rolled out in a staggered manner and not at one go, as he had said that cutting short the remaining terms of assemblies with substantive tenure left for the purpose of synchronising election cycles could be legally challenged. However, all three ex-CJIs have not questioned the constitutionality of the concept of simultaneous polls. Chandrachud said in his written opinion that simultaneous elections will not infringe upon the voters' right to elect their representatives and that the bill ensures that electors remain continuously represented by their duly elected MPs or MLAs. He said, "Arguments opposing simultaneous elections are based on the premise that the Indian electorate is naive and can be easily manipulated." He said, "The argument that staggered elections are a part of the Constitution's basic structure (or form part of the principles of federalism or democracy) does not hold. Staggered timing of elections cannot be considered as a feature of the original Constitution, let alone an immutable feature." However, his opinion is not without notes of caution over some of the bill's features or the likely implications if it is to be enacted. Chandrachud has appeared to share the concern that simultaneous elections could marginalise smaller or regional parties due to the dominance of better-resourced national parties, saying it is a significant policy aspect that warrants legislative attention. He said, "To ensure a level playing field among political parties, the rules governing electoral campaigning, particularly those relating to campaign finance, must be strengthened." While the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, impose ceilings on the amount a candidate may spend during the election campaign, there are no corresponding limits on the expenditure incurred by political parties themselves, he noted. This gap in regulation weighs in the electoral process towards parties with greater financial resources, he said. As the bill says that the term of a House elected after a midterm poll will be only for the remainder of the five year term, Chandrachud has said the ability of the government to take any meaningful project will be minimised if its tenure is only of a year or less as the Model Code of Conduct will come into force around six months before the next polls. Several MPs in the panel have also raised this point about the likely priorities and strength of a government elected for a short period.

Embrace transparency, tech and member-centric approach: Amit Shah urges cooperative sector
Union Minister of Cooperation and Home Amit Shah on Sunday called upon the cooperative sector to follow three principles — transparency, acceptance of technology and prioritising a member's interest — to make the cooperative movement last. Shah made these remarks during an event to celebrate the fourth foundation day of the Ministry of Cooperation at Amul Dairy in Anand district. During the programme, Shah also launched several projects, including a cooperative of salt producers of Kutch district. Shah said, 'Today, all the cooperative leaders are present. It is my strong insistence to all of you that in the current Year of Cooperation, we should strongly follow three things on ground; transparency, acceptance of technology and to bring the member in core focus.' 'Until and unless there is no transparency, the cooperative movement cannot last long. In many countries, the movement has finished and when the reasons behind the same were studied, (it was found that) lack of transparency damaged the feeling of cooperation,' Shah asserted. He said, 'Wherever, technology has not been accepted, the cooperative movement hasn't survived competition. Even in the cooperatives, where a member's interest is not given supreme priority, (it) too gets finished.' Shah asked all the leaders to practice the three principles on ground and make it a 'work culture'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Government had on July 6, 2021 formed the Ministry of Cooperation and Shah was appointed its first minister. The Union Minister said that the 'feeling of cooperation has been prevalent in the country since the Vedic times'. And PM Modi, he added, 'gave it a legal status'. The minister said that four years ago, Modi laid the foundation of the Ministry of Cooperation with the mantra of 'Prosperity through Cooperation,' giving a new life to the cooperative system. The Cooperation Minister said that under PM Modi's leadership, the ministry has taken 60 initiatives. And all the initiatives are based on five Ps; 'People', 'PACS' (primary agriculture cooperative societies), 'Platform' (digital and national), 'Policy' and 'Prosperity'. Shah said, 'I am speaking from the land of Amul. At least 36 lakh women of Gujarat and 20 lakh (other) women of the country toil daily and collect milk. The annual turnover of the milk cooperative Amul will reach Rs 1 lakh crore next year, up from Rs 80,000 crore. And its profit will go to the bank accounts of these 56 lakh women.' During the occasion, a number of projects were launched such as Sardar Patel Dairy Federation Limited (SPCDF), a cooperative of salt producers of Kutch and several projects of Amul like a mozzarella cheese manufacturing facility, an ultra modern cheese warehouse and expansion of Amul chocolate plant Mogar. SPCDF is a dairy cooperative of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act. It aims to bring together the village-level dairy cooperatives outside Gujarat under a unified federation, expanding the cooperative model nationally. The salt producers' cooperative has been formed by Sarhad Dairy in association with the Amul federation. Speaking on the new salt cooperative launched in Kutch district, Shah said, 'In coming days, I am confident that like Amul, it will be a strong cooperative model for our salt producing workers.' Shah also congratulated Sarhad Dairy Chairman Valamji Humbal for taking the initiative of setting up the salt cooperative. Shah also paid tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on the occasion of his birth anniversary stating that Kashmir would never have become an integral part of India without Mookerjee. 'Mookerjee sacrificed his life for Kashmir, raising the slogan 'Ek desh mein do Vidhan, do Pradhan, aur Do Nishan nahi chalenge' (There can't be two Constitutions, two flags and two leaders in the same country),' he said. The Union Home Affairs Minister said the entire credit goes to Mookerjee and Swami Pranavananda for West Bengal becoming a part of India. 'Mookerjee (who was the then industry minister) resigned from Jawaharlal Nehru's Cabinet in protest against the policy of appeasement. The party, Jan Sangha, which he started with 10 members, has today become the world's largest political party, as the BJP, with a membership of 12 crore people,' Shah said.
