Jones, widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of all time, has been involved in a prolonged standoff for the past year with UFC heavyweight interim champion Tom Aspinall. While Jones remained noncommittal, Aspinall was forced to defend his interim belt and sit out instead of fighting a unification bout. In a shocking turn of events, however, UFC CEO Dana White dropped a bombshell announcement that closes one of the most significant chapters in UFC history while ushering in a new era.

During the UFC Baku post-fight press conference, UFC CEO Dana White revealed that Jon Jones has officially retired. With Jones' retirement now official, White also announced that Tom Aspinall has been crowned the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.

White told the press, 'Jon Jones called us last night and retired. Jon Jones has officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC.'
The announcement came after months of speculation regarding Jones' future, with the UFC heavyweight champion repeatedly hinting at walking away from the sport.
White was asked whether or not he regrets spending precious time trying to book Aspinall vs. Jones, to which he responded, 'If you look at what [Jones] has accomplished in the sport, no... I obviously feel bad for Tom that he lost all that time and money, but we'll make it up to him.'

The British star, who held the interim title for nearly 600 days (the longest interim championship reign in UFC history), finally secures the undisputed status he has been working towards. Aspinall had grown increasingly vocal about the division's stagnation, declaring earlier this month that Jones had retired.
With Jones retiring, one of the most storied and controversial careers in MMA history now comes to an end. His departure from the UFC marks the end of an era, leaving Aspinall to lead the heavyweight division and bring excitement to the promotion.
The division itself, meanwhile, can finally move forward, after having been stuck in limbo since Jones's last title defense against Stipe Miocic in November 2024.
With Jones's saga officially over, the UFC now turns its attention to booking Aspinall's first title defense, with an announcement expected soon.

Xabi Alonso highlights ‘what he needs to teach' Kylian Mbappe on Real Madrid return

Xabi Alonso is ready to bring Kylian Mbappe back into his Real Madrid squad ahead of their FIFA Club World Cup clash with Juventus. Los Blancos secured top spot in Group H after winning two games and drawing with Al Hilal to set up a tie with Juventus in Florida. Advertisement Star striker Mbappe missed all three games due to illness as Alonso opted against risking him in the 3-0 win over RB Salzburg to ensure he would be fully fit to take the Serie A giants. Will Kylian Mbappe play vs. Juventus? Mbappe is back in full training and is on course to start against Juventus, flanked by Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes, with Gonzalo Garcia dropping to the bench. Alonso is still working on his tactical plan for next season with Mbappe central to what he wants to do in the Spanish capital. Xabi Alonso's Kylian Mbappe concern on Real Madrid return Former Germany and USA boss Jurgen Klinsmann claimed fitting Mbappe and Vinicius Jr will be a major test for Alonso. Image via El Futbolero Advertisement 'They are two personalities Xabi has to manage and I'm sure the team will manage to compensate for everything to get the best out of them. At PSG, it didn't work out in those two years with Neymar, Mbappe and Messi. 'It will be hard for Xabi to get both of them to defend more.' Ahead of Mbappe's recall, Alonso admitted he needs the France international to change his game in the coming weeks, with a few concerns. 'He's a leader because of his impact and influence. We all need to be committed to the collective ideas and enjoy what we get to do. The demands are the same for everyone,' as per Marca. 'We need to be committed on and off the ball. It's going to be hard to teach Mbappe how to dribble, but it's hard to teach him how to link up. '

Bonmati illness adds to questions around Spain Euros bid

Spain's key player Aitana Bonmati is recovering from illness ahead of Euro 2025 in Switzerland this summer (LLUIS GENE) Spain are the favourites to win the women's European Championship this summer but star player Aitana Bonmati's illness ahead of the tournament raises another question mark around a side which, despite their obvious quality, are not unstoppable. Having claimed the last two Ballon d'Or awards, Barcelona midfielder Bonmati is the game's biggest star at present, so her absence in the final days before the start of Euro 2025 is a major setback. Advertisement The 27-year-old came down with a fever in training last week and was subsequently hospitalised and diagnosed with viral meningitis. Bonmati was discharged on Sunday and joined up with the squad on Monday but is unlikely to be ready to feature in Spain's first game, against Portugal on July 3. "She is so important for us and we will wait for her, whatever happens, until the end," said Spain coach Montse Tome. It brings to mind Alexia Putellas' severe knee injury just before Euro 2022, where Spain lost against eventual winners England in the quarter-finals, although Bonmati could yet play a key role for La Roja in Switzerland. Advertisement Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Putellas has never quite been the same since, although she insists the injury actually helped her. "I am a better Alexia now," she told reporters last week. "I know myself much better now. I know what my qualities are and also what I have to work on. At the end of the day, I believe all suffering helps you evolve as a person and as an athlete. "I know how to manage tough moments better now and how to enjoy the good ones as well." With Patri Guijarro -- who sat out Spain's 2023 World Cup triumph in protest as part of a long-running feud between several players and the Spanish football federation -- at the base of midfield and Putellas and Bonmati ahead of her, the central trio are a pillar of strength for the team. Advertisement With Barcelona this season they triumphed in Liga F and the Copa de la Reina, but were generally below their best and also fell to a shock defeat against Arsenal in the Champions League final. Renee Slegers' team gave Spain's opposition this summer the blueprint to shutting down the trio, but whether any of them can manage it is another matter entirely. "They are the conductors, the engine," explained Arsenal's Dutch coach, who flooded the midfield to stop Bonmati, Putellas and Guijarro from finding their rhythm. Arsenal also recreated the movements of the trio in training and worked on how to frustrate them. Advertisement - 'On my mind' - After the recent disappointment of the Champions League final and her untimely injury in 2022, Putellas is determined to right those wrongs. "I won't lie to you, I've had this tournament on my mind after getting injured the day before the last Euros," Putellas said. "I'm really looking forward to it. I have been preparing for this moment for a long time, but above all I want to enjoy it and compete to win every game." In a friendly against Japan, Barca youngster Vicky Lopez, 18, took Bonmati's place and scored in a 3-1 victory. Spain dominated the ball and the game but still conceded, something of a recurring theme for them in recent months and another question mark for Tome to answer. Advertisement Lopez's display, however, offered a potential solution to Bonmati's short-term absence. "She is naturally gifted, a player who calls for more minutes with her work-rate, what she shows on the pitch calls for more game time... we've always trusted in her," said Tome. "Vicky was good in the pressing and she managed to score a goal." It was Lopez's third strike in 10 appearances for Spain and a string she has been working hard on adding to her bow. Whether she is ready to step in and deliver on the biggest stage is unknown but we may soon find out. rbs/nf
