Three LIV players punch Open tickets after Sergio Garcia's misses short putt

NBC Sports23-03-2025
Sergio Garcia was 3 feet from an Open Championship berth.
And then he wasn't.
Garcia missed the short birdie putt on his final hole Sunday at the Asian Tour's International Serie Macau, settling for par and a fourth-place finish, one shot behind fellow LIV Golf member Jason Kokrak.
Kokrak earned the final of three invites into this summer's Open at Royal Portrush. The two other qualifiers from the event, which is part of the Open Qualifying Series, were also LIV players: runner-up Patrick Reed and winner Carlos Ortiz.
Garcia would've won a tiebreaker with Kokrak, considering he is ranked better in the Official World Golf Ranking (No. 513 to No. 775).
After competing in 22 straight Opens, Garcia failed to qualify in each of the past two years; he took part in final qualifying both years, though didn't advance. He still has chances to qualify this year, whether through final qualifying or a new exemption that will go to the top player inside the top five of LIV's standings after the LIV Dallas event in June who is not already exempt. Garcia is currently third in LIV points behind Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann, who are both already qualified.
Following Marc Leishman at the Australian Open, four LIV players have now earned Open spots via the qualifying series, which continues at the Kolon Korea Open in May.
Golf Channel Staff,
The field for July 17-20 at Portrush currently features 14 LIV players: Ortiz, Reed, Kokrak, Rahm, Niemann, Leishman, Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Tom McKibbin, Phil Mickelson, Louis Oosthuizen and Cameron Smith.

LIV Golf applies again for place in world golf rankings, which would give its players better access to majors

The OWGR board has an annual meeting next week at the British Open. The OWGR denied the first application in October 2023 — the first full year of the league — saying it could not fairly measure LIV Golf with two dozen other tours around the world because of what amounted to a closed shop, along with the individual competition potentially being compromised by scores counting toward a team result. LIV now has 54 players — 13 four-man teams and two wild cards — and keeps the roster all season except for alternates used in case of injury. Advertisement Other tours have various forms of qualifying that allow for changes in the field among a larger membership. LIV began a 'promotions' event that offered three spots at the end of 2023, but that was reduced to one spot last year. The leader of the Asian Tour's International Series also gets a spot in LIV provided he's not already a member. Related : World ranking points have been seen as critical to LIV because the four majors — all of which have a seat on the OWGR board — use the ranking to help determined the field. The US Open and British Open this year added a category for top LIV performers. The Masters and PGA Championship use invitations at their discretion to get whom they consider deserving. Advertisement LIV, which once tried to get ranking points by becoming part of the MENA Tour in Africa, formally O'Neil in a statement thanked Immelman for his 'willingness to move the sport of golf forward for the benefit of all players and most importantly, the fans.' 'LIV Golf is committed to working together with the Official World Golf Ranking and its board to ensure the very best players are competing in the game's most prestigious events,' O'Neil said. 'We are confident our application addresses the outstanding questions that exist to support a more global, all-encompassing, and accurate ranking system.' O'Neil said he hoped the approval process can go through before the 2026 major season. Immelman had said the rejection letter sent to LIV in October 2023 was 'quite clear' with the position the board had at the time and any change would start with LIV applying anew. 'We appreciate the interest of LIV Golf — and all the tours — in contributing to the global landscape of men's professional golf through OWGR,' the statement said. Advertisement

Royals' Maikel Garcia Receives All-Star Nod Replacing Rays' Infielder

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Kansas City Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia was named to the American League All-Star team for the first time in his career. He will be replacing Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe next week in Atlanta, MLB announced on X. More Photo byGarcia is having the best season of his young career and is well-deserved of this chance to go to Atlanta for the All-Star Game for the first time. Garcia is hitting .305 with eight home runs entering Friday, and has been a key piece in the lineup with Salvador Perez, Bobby Witt Jr., and Vinnie Pasquantino. Garcia was on the list of snubs that deserved an All-Star spot but missed out due to a plethora of deserving players at his position. Now that he is in, it is time for the budding youngster to get his name into the mouths of fans that might not know him yet. Lowe will be missing out on the All-Star game due to left oblique tightness and has been placed on the injured list. This was Lowe's second All-Star nod, his last coming in 2019. While the second baseman is likely disappointed to be missing the chance to play among the stars once again, he is a crucial part of the Rays' chances of making it to October. Garcia is a star in the making, and upon his first All-Star appearance, the third baseman should be ready to make a statement on a national stage.
