'Glastonbury's efforts to stop overcrowding ignore its huge remaining problem'

Daily Mirror6 days ago
With its killer headliners, never-ending line-up and intense community spirit, it's easy to see why thousands of music lovers from across the world are currently descending on Somerset for Glastonbury Festival. There's nowhere else you take a Tai Chi class, watch a drag show, visit a fake airport terminal created by Banksy - all before making it to the front row of Charli XCX.
I'll be driving down for my third stint at the five-day event and while it continues to be my favourite place on the planet, Glastonbury's constant issue of overcrowding continues to read its potentially dangerous head. Over 200,000 people attend the festival on average and gatecrashers have frequently been a problem.
Just last year, hundreds of trespassers were spotted sneaking onto the grounds while inside the festival, I found myself uncomfortably squished against others who hadn't showered in days while trying to watch Avril Lavigne on The Other Stage.
Glastonbury organise Emily Eavis recently revealed that the festival has taken action by selling "a few thousand less tickets" this year in a bid to reduce the big crowds. But making it harder for people to legitimately buy tickets isn't the solution here.
While roaming the festival last year, I came across a number of gate-crashes who had snuck their way in - whether it was by paying to be smuggled in through a staff entrance or scaling the 7.8km fence. I spotted one Glastonbury intruder who was walking around with just an old wristband for Boomtown and wasn't being stopped.
Beefing up security around the festival would be the ideal way of reducing the over-crowding problem - however, there's another much simpler solution. Stop putting artists on stages that are far too small.
Last year, those hoping to watch the Sugababes with enough room to literally spin Round Round were left disappointed, when their West Holts performance became much busier than expected. Similarly, overcrowding at Avril Lavigne reached a dangerous level when 70,000 people turned up for the set - while Janelle Monae sadly drew handfuls of fans in comparison to her clashing performance on the Pyramid Stage.
Unfortunately, Glastonbury don't seem to have learnt their lesson with one of the world's biggest pop stars Charli XCX taking to The Other Stage while Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts take to the Pyramid. Neil may be a legend, but Charli is an ever-rising star with triple his monthly Spotify listeners (37.8m). BBC One is even planning on broadcasting Charli's set over his, although his may be down to his battle with the broadcaster as insiders say that he doesn't want his set shown in full.
As a big Brat fan, I can't wait to party 4 Charli, but I'm preparing for the inevitable squish in a choppy sea of lime green.

Rod Stewart says 'it tore me to shreds' as he opens up on marriage heartbreak

More info Sir Rod Stewart has opened up about the breakdown of his marriage to his second wife, Rachel Hunter. After walking down the aisle for the first time in 1979 with Alana Hamilton, the pair, who have two children, Kimberly and Sean, called it quits five years later. The rockstar went on marry former model Rachel Hunter in 1990, who at the time was 21, while he was 45. Together, the former couple also share two children; Renee and Liam. According to The Times, Rod, 80, met his current spouse, Penny Lancaster, only a day after his split from Rachel in 1999. Speaking to the publication, he reminisced about their initial meeting, stating that Penny requested his autograph, while he asked if she enjoyed dancing. "She was an incredible dancer, gorgeous, [and wearing] 6ft 4in heels," he fondly recalled. Although he took an instant liking to the Loose Women star, Rod confessed that he was advised to remain single after parting ways with Rachel. (Image: GETTY) "There were six months between Rachel and Penny because my bass player, who had Penny's number, wouldn't give it to me," he explained. "He said, 'All you're going to do now is s**g around'. And he was right, I had a splendid time in those six months." The couple's divorce was officially finalised in 2006. A year later, he tied the knot with Penny, a Loose Women star and police constable. "Rachel left me because she was too young. My sister said I should never have married her in the first place, but it tore me to shreds," he confessed. Speaking about his present wife, he went on to gush over their relationship, claiming Penny has "got everything" he's ever desired. The pair, who have two sons together, Alastair, 19, and Aiden, 14, have been married for 18 years. (Image: GETTY) Just last week, Penny provided Rod with support as he took to the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival for a showstopping 90-minute set. Also in the crowd were their two sons, alongside Renee and Ruby, who is another one of Rod's daughters, with former model Kelly Emberg. Before Rod's performance on stage, the couple gave fans an insight into their 18th wedding anniversary celebrations last month. To mark the occasion, they hopped on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, to revisit the locations where they got engaged, married, and honeymooned. Rod proposed to Penny in the romantic city of Paris and they later wed in the Portofino, Italy, followed by a yacht-bound honeymoon along the Italian coast.

Paul Mescal is BITTEN by braless girlfriend Gracie Abrams in steamy clinch as vape-clutching actor parties hard with Daisy Edgar-Jones, his siblings and A-listers at Glastonbury

Glastonbury Festival sees a slew of A-listers descend on sleepy Somerset annually for a weekend of debauchery. And a number of stars joined forces over the weekend to live it up - with Paul Mescal, his girlfriend Gracie Abrams, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Harris Dickinson and India Mullen partying hard among a number of other glittering star pals. Songstress Rose Gray, 28, took to Instagram to share images from the weekend with her 53.1k followers, with the carousel of snaps illustrating their hard-partying. Paul, 29, and Gracie, 25, who have been dating for one year, looked cosy in the shots with the vape-clutching Irishman enjoying kisses from his girlfriend, who performed at the festival. Paul was joined at the event by his sister Nell and brother Donnacha. Daisy, 27, who has been in a relationship with photographer Ben Seed since September 2023, looked sensational in the snaps as she partied alongside her boyfriend as well as her Normal People co-stars Paul and India. Paul and his posse were joined by fellow actor Harris Dickinson, with whom he will appear in the upcoming Beatles biopic by Sam Mendes. The duo will play Paul McCartney and John Lennon respectively in the film. Gracie left little to the imagination at the event, where she was flashing her bare chest through a sheer tee paired with a polka dot bandana. Her boyfriend draped his arms around the stunner while holding a vape and posing alongside India, with whom he starred in 2020. In the coming of age show, Paul played Connell, Daisy starred as Marianne and India appeared as Peggy. While larking around in the crowd, India and Daisy cosied up to Rose, who looked incredible in a pink Agent Provocateur bra and fishnet tights. Rose also showed herself behind the DJ booth in a Burberry ensemble while also attaching a self-branded sticker reading 'Party People F**k' on her chest. The group were also joined by a friend called Olivia - who works as a talent coordinator for Gladiator II director Ridley Scott. Gladiator II was Paul's latest movie. It comes a month after Gracie, who is the daughter of Star Wars director, JJ Abrams, and the Irish heartthob made their first red carpet appearance in France at the History Of Sound premiere. Daisy was not outdone in the romance stakes by her pal Paul, as she was seen with the and self-taught photographer walking hand-in-hand at the popular music event which takes place at Worthy Farm every year. The couple are relatively private and generally keep their romance under wraps, rarely speaking about one another in interviews. However, Ben is no stranger to a high-profile relationship, having previously dated The Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy. He split up with Anya ahead of her beating Daisy to the best actress at the Golden Globes in 2021. Meanwhile, Daisy split from her ex-boyfriend Tom Varey in late 2020 after two years of dating. Daisy is said to be on 'cloud nine' with Ben, who also goes by the artist name Pip.

BBC drops high risk live performances after Bob Vylan Glastonbury set

The broadcaster said it was wrong to believe the punk duo Bob Vylan were 'suitable for live streaming with appropriate mitigations' for their performance at the Glastonbury Festival last week. The BBC said it had ranked the punk duo as 'high risk' before the event, but following the fallout from the live performance, they have now decided to make immediate changes to their live streaming music events policy. A statement from the BBC also signalled there would be repercussions for those responsible for the 'failings' of not cutting the live feed of Bob Vylan's performance at the weekend. READ MORE: Rachel Reeves breaks silence on tears in the House of Commons The statement said: 'We fully understand the strength of feeling regarding Bob Vylan's live appearance at Glastonbury on the BBC. 'Bob Vylan were deemed high risk following a risk assessment process applied to all acts appearing at Glastonbury. Seven acts including Bob Vylan were included in this category and they were all deemed suitable for live streaming with appropriate mitigations. 'Prior to Glastonbury, a decision was taken that compliance risks could be mitigated in real time on the live stream – through the use of language or content warnings – without the need for a delay. This was clearly not the case. 'During the performance, the live stream was monitored in line with the agreed compliance protocols and a number of issues were escalated. Warnings appeared on the stream on two occasions and the editorial team took the decision not to cut the feed. This was an error. 'Given the failings that have been acknowledged we are taking actions to ensure proper accountability for those found to be responsible for those failings in the live broadcast. We will not comment further on those processes at this time. 'Furthermore, as a result we will make immediate changes to live streaming music events. 'Any music performances deemed high risk will now not be broadcast live or streamed live.'
