Andrew Seow of Growing Up is now an auxiliary police officer
The former actor is best known for his role as rebellious elder son Gary in the Channel 5 period drama Growing Up (1996 to 2001). He is now working as an auxiliary police officer with security firm Aetos.
Content creator Zaki Hussain shared a video in partnership with Aetos on Instagram on July 2, in which he asked Seow how he went into the security sector.
"My dad used to be an auxiliary police officer back in the British days," Seow said.
"When he asked me: 'Why don't you do something meaningful in your life?', I said: 'Okay, let me try.' I got the interview."
The 55-year-old said his father drove him all the way from Marine Parade to Jurong, where Aetos is headquartered, on the day he told his father he was going for the interview.
"I had never seen him so excited," Seow said, recalling that his father wished him all the best before he went for the interview.
Zaki asked Seow if he missed acting. "I miss my fans," he said.
They re-enacted a scene from Growing Up, where Seow, in uniform, reprised his role as Gary, while Zaki played Gary's father Mr Tay. The character was played in the original series by veteran actor Lim Kay Tong.
Growing Up was a family drama about the trials and tribulations of the Tay family spanning the 1960s to the 1980s. Seow's role as Gary earned him the Best Newcomer accolade at the Asian Television Awards in 1996. Seow, who starred in all six seasons of Growing Up, left Mediacorp in 2007.
Growing Up also starred Wee Soon Hui as Mrs Tay, Irin Gan as the wilful and fashionable elder daughter Vicky, and Steven Lim as the intellectual younger son David.
The youngest sibling Tammy was first played by local actress Fann Wong's younger sister Fann Woon Jing and then Quek Sue-shan, before the role went to Jamie Yeo.
Seow spoke fondly of his Growing Up character in a report in The Straits Times in 2015.
"Gary is very close to my heart. I feel that everyone has a Gary in them," he said. "Have we not been rebellious before? Was there not a time when your parents asked you what time you were coming home and you ignored them? I guess that's why people can relate to the role."

SINGAPORE - Come August, visitors here can have a visceral experience of passengers onboard the fateful Titanic through virtual reality technology at Titanic: An Immersive Voyage - T hrough the E yes of the P assengers. It will be the first time the exhibition is coming to Asia, having staged in places such as Cincinnati, New Orleans, and Copenhagen. Its creator, Exhibition Hub, is leveraging on technology such as 3D projections, video animations and virtual reality to capture the sundry of emotions faced by the ship's passengers. The Titanic, a luxury British ocean liner, was carrying about 2,000 passengers from Southampton in England to New York City in the US in April 1912 when it struck an iceberg and sank . An estimated 1,500 people lost their lives in the tragedy . Since then, the Titanic has had a lasting legacy in popular culture, especially with James Cameron's award-winning film Titanic. Unlike traditional exhibits, participants can relive the passengers' experience - from boarding the Titanic, to setting sail across the Atlantic, and ultimately, living through the panic and heartbreak of that fateful night. The journey will take voyagers through the ship's cabins, dining rooms and decks, as it slowly descends into the icy ocean. The exhibition will also feature more than 300 artefacts recovered from the Titanic that include letters handwritten by the passengers, which paints the liner's tragic tale in intimate light. Exclusive to the Singapore edition is a special full-wall panel featuring the first local report of Titanic's sinking in 1912. Visitors can also get a rare glimpse into Singapore in the 1910s , with historical photographs of the island' s landscape and lifestyle at the time. The exhibition also offers a cutting-edge walking virtual reality experience for VIP-ticket holders, transporting them to the wreck site, which rests more than 4km beneath the surface of the North Atlantic ocean. Slated to open on Aug 6 at the Fever Exhibition Hall on Scotts Road , tickets will be available on the official website and the Fever platform from July 10 . Ticket prices begin at $23.90. Top Gear legend James May brings new live show about explorers to Singapore fans in August

SINGAPORE - James May, the presenter of iconic motoring programme Top Gear, will take his live theatre show to Singapore fans on Aug 22 and 23 , for the first time. But instead of cars and bikes, the British TV personality will be bringing to life the tales of intrepid explorers in his show, Explorers - The Age of Discovery, at Capitol Theatre. 'Using theatrical techniques, immersive storytelling, and his signature dry humour, James will unravel the breathtaking tales of those who risked everything in pursuit of the unknown,' wrote the show's organiser, Lateral Events, on its Instagram page. On July 2 , May gave a shout-out to his Singapore fans in an Instagram video. 'Hello people of Singapore. I'm very excited to be coming your country with my new live show about exploration,' the 62-year-old said. Referencing lesser known explorers, such as Leif Erikson and John Rowlands, he added: 'If you come along and join me, you can find out all about them.' May made his career debut in 1999 in the original run of BBC's Top Gear and in 2003, went on to co-present a revived version of the series with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond. The three of them gained a massive following around the world, before Clarkson was dropped from the show for reportedly assaulting a colleague. Following his departure, May and Hammond also left the show. May's most recent television shows include The Grand Tour, which has a similar focus as Top Gear and also features the trio, and a travelogue series titled James May: Our man in ... on Amazon Prime Video. Beyond Singapore, May is also expected to take his live show to Australia and New Zealand. Tickets for his Singapore show are priced between $95 and $175 and are available on the Sistic Singapore website.
