Lucas' family asked Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, a longtime friend of Lucas' father, to be their spokesperson as they mourn a heavy loss. In that role, Suarez said Lucas had a spontaneous rupture of the aorta potentially linked to an undiagnosed genetic condition.
His family also wanted to ensure Lucas' death does not 'discourage other children from participating in youth athletics. They emphasize that they were unaware of the underlying condition and continue to seek answers through further medical review,' the statement read.'
'They are people of deep faith, and they're leaning on that faith—and each other—to get through the unimaginable,' Suarez said.
Earlier this week, Suarez posted condolences to Instagram: 'Lucas was the eldest son of my dear friend Mike, whom I've known for years through our time training together in Coconut Grove. My heart breaks for him and his family.'

The Yankees and Phillies are both desperate for wins, which should make Saturday's battle between the two historic franchises quite a spectacle. While the Yankees have plenty of work to do to make up ground on the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East, the Phillies are locked in a neck-and-neck tussle with the Mets for supremacy in the NL East. What our Post expert thinks about Yankees vs. Phillies on Saturday On paper, it's hard to argue against the Phillies having a decided pitching edge Saturday. Ranger Suarez has been terrific for Philadelphia this season, while Marcus Stroman has yet to find any consistency for the Yankees since moving to the Bronx in 2024. Stroman has put together two strong starts in a row coming into Saturday, but it's hard to be confident that he will be able to replicate that output. 21+. Gambling problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. Why Yankees jumped on Ryan McMahon trade — and gave up on Eugenio Suarez
The Yankees prioritized getting on the board rather than hitting a home run at third base. They really liked Eugenio Suarez, but felt Arizona had a strong group of contenders vying for the slugger, perhaps led by the Cubs. That convinced the Yankees that there would be a waiting period, through the weekend at least, as even after trading first baseman Josh Naylor to the Mariners, the Diamondbacks wanted to use more time to learn if they had a last-ditch chance to get into the wild card race. And then with multiple teams on Suarez, the bidding could go back and forth all the way to Thursday's trade deadline. That would guarantee a rise to a prospect cost that the Yankees did not want to expend on a walk-year player, as brilliant as Suarez's power has been since last year's All-Star break. And there was a fear of waiting until the deadline and not getting Suarez … and then what? The Yankees wanted to hold onto better prospects because internally they see pitching as a bigger priority than third base. That is how they ended up on Friday dealing two lower-level pitching prospects – lefty Griffin Herring and righty Josh Grosz – to the Rockies for Ryan McMahon. They are seeing it as an upgrade at third base – almost anything would have to be – while staying flexible to add elsewhere. Advertisement 5 Eugenio Suarez is the top third baseman on the trade market. AP It is even still possible that the Yankees add another position player – someone such as Minnesota switch-hitter Willi Castro or Washington's righty-swinging Amed Rosario – as they search for batters who do well against lefties (as McMahon makes the daily lineup even more left-handed) and have positional maneuverability. But the main area of fixation now is to improve the pitching.

Cubs Third Baseman Making Trade Deadline Decisions Difficult
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Cubs have been heavily involved in the Eugenio Suarez sweepstakes. That is no surprise, and it has been reported several times that Chicago is among the frontrunners to land the Diamondbacks' slugger. However, the decision to pull the trigger on a Suarez trade is becoming more difficult by the day thanks to the second-half resurgence from Matt Shaw. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 21: Matt Shaw #6 of the Chicago Cubs celebrates with manager Craig Counsell #11 after hitting a three-run home run off Noah Cameron #65 of the Kansas City Royals during the... CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 21: Matt Shaw #6 of the Chicago Cubs celebrates with manager Craig Counsell #11 after hitting a three-run home run off Noah Cameron #65 of the Kansas City Royals during the second inning at Wrigley Field on July 21, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. MoreShaw's career has not gotten off to the start that he or the organization had hoped it would. The first month was bad enough that Chicago sent Shaw back to Triple-A Iowa to work on some things and make adjustments. Those adjustments showed up for about three weeks in his second major league stint of the season but then disappeared again. Shaw entered the All-Star break with a .198 average and was just 2-for-27 at the plate in July. He had been relegated to a bench role for the final week before the break and it now looks like that may have been the perfect move. Since play resumed on July 18, Shaw has been one of the hottest hitters across MLB. He is 9-for-19 with three home runs, six RBI and has raised his average to .221 in that span. MATT SHAW FOR 3! — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) July 22, 2025 Shaw's three home runs in the second half of the season are already one more than he had in the first 100 games of the season. He is turning into the player that the organization hoped he'd be when it made the decision for him to make the opening day roster and be the starting third baseman as a rookie. His resurgence is making the decision to acquire the previously mentioned Suarez a difficult one. Sure, he has 36 home runs and leads MLB in RBI, but is it worth putting Shaw on the bench every day? The one scenario where a Suarez trade makes sense would be to play him at first base against left-handers rather than putting 40-year-old Justin Turner over there. Either way, Shaw is playing at an elite level over the last six games and is putting the front office in an extremely tough situation.
