Calls Mount for Al Horford to Change Decision After Jonas Valanciunas News
Boston Celtics center Al Horford still remains a free agent days after NBA Free Agency started. While it hasn't been made official, all signs point toward an eventual agreement with the Golden State Warriors. That said, the latest news about Jonas Valanciunas could impact things.

After the Denver Nuggets acquired Valanciunas from the Sacramento Kings, the Lithuanian center has since been coveted by the Greek Professional Basketball team Panathinaikos. According to Marc Stein, Valanciunas now wants to leave the NBA to play overseas.
If and when he does this, the Nuggets will have a hole in the backup center spot. Even though Nikola Jokic has won three of the last five MVPs, he will need rest, so Denver will have to find another player who can back him up while he sits on the bench.

The one player who could do that is Horford. For the last two seasons in Boston, Horford has switched between starting and coming off the bench, only doing the latter when Kristaps Porzingis couldn't play. At 39 years old, an even smaller role in Denver could further conserve Horford, as the Celtics have done.

Stein and Jake Fischer reported late on July 3, "All signs, for the record, continue to point to Al Horford landing with Golden State … eventually."
That's why many have pleaded for Horford to change this decision and pick Denver instead.
"Just sign Al Horford, and go find a way to get a backup point guard, and the Nuggets are still winning it all," one wrote.
"I need Jonas situation to be official so Nuggets can throw that bag at Horford," another wrote.
"In my opinion, Al Horford should play on the Nuggets and not with the Warriors or Lakers," another stated. "But that's just one man's opinion."

"If the Nuggets end up with Horford because of this that's even better…" one responded to the Valanciunas news.
If Valanciunas gives all the money back from his current NBA contract to Denver, they would have the full mid-level exception to offer Horford.

Time for a drink
Follow live reaction to Chelsea's comfortable 2-0 victory over Fluminense, in which Joao Pedro scored twice on his debut Getty Images Getty Images 77' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea It hasn't really got any cooler — or less humid — in East Rutherford, although no sign of any thunderstorms so far, thankfully. To a man, every player on the pitch is wearing a jersey soaked in sweat, so we are having our second cooling break of the game. 75' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea Credit to Chelsea for making this Fluminense look pretty dishevelled in this semi-final. They have looked so organised, particularly defensive, at this tournament but Maresca's men have made them look very oridnary. The latest man to threaten the Brazilians was Cucurella who teased a superb cross right across the six-yard box but Thiago Silva made a key header to divert it from the three men waiting to head it in from close range. Getty Images Getty Images 73' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea A battle down the Chelsea left-hand side between Soteldo and Cucurella is won by the Spaniard after he pestered the Fluminense substitute enough to swing a hand in his face. Cucurella, as you can probably imagine, went down rather theatrically with yet another shriek. A yellow card was rightly shown to Soteldo. 71' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea The Fluminense supporters are not giving up hope of a comeback here, and neither are the players. They are shooting towards the end of the stadium where their fans are housed so they would love to give them something to celebrate. Vinicius Lima, who has just been introduced from the bench, has just slammed an effort over the crossbar from 20 yards. Getty Images 68' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea Both managers look to their benches on this very hot summer's day. For Fluminense, Yeferson Soteldo has replaced Nonato while it is Noni Madueke and Reece James on for Neto and Gusto for the Premier League side. Getty Images 67' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea Moises Caicedo is having such an excellent game. We know how much he loves a challenge, but the bite he adds to Chelsea's midfield is just superb. Another perfect tackle is just further evidence of that. Getty Images 66' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea That was an absolutely stunning move by Chelsea a couple of minutes ago. They baited the press, there was one-touch passing, synchronized movements — all it was missing was the goal, courtesy of a goal-line clearance by Thiago Silva for Fluminense. 64' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea It isn't just the scoreboard that Chelsea are dominating, they have been far the better team throughout the entirety of this semi-final. It feels like the victories against Inter and Al Hilal have left Fluminense with nothing left in the tank for another upset and Chelsea have been excellent in punishing them. Stranger things have happened in this sport, but it feels like the Brazilians need something of a miracle to come back from here. 61' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea This is the first time that Joao Pedro has scored two non-penalty goals in a match since he did so in January 2024 for Brighton against Stoke City in the FA Cup. Before that, you'd have to go back to December 2022 for the previous instance, when he had a brace for Watford against Huddersfield Town in the Championship. Getty Images 60' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea There will be no hat-trick for Pedro on his first start, but he has had a huge influence on this semi-final. Two goals and he has almost certainly secured his place in the starting XI for the final, if Chelsea hold on. Jackson is on for his third appearance of the tournament. Moments before, Fluminense's Nonato was booked for a very late challenge on Pedro. Getty Images 58' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea Just like that, Chelsea have a commanding lead in this Club World Cup semi-final. Not happy with a first goal on his first start for his new club, Pedro has doubled up! Palmer led the counter-attack and after he was dispossessed, Fernandez picked it up and released Pedro with a beauty of a pass from the outside of his foot. The Brazilian raced towards the penalty area, breezed past Ignacio onto his right foot and hammered an effort off the crossbar and in. The sort of clinical finish Chelsea have desperately lacked with Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap up there. Getty Images 56' Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea Another superb finish from Joao Pedro on his full Chelsea debut! Getty Images 55' Fluminense 0-1 Chelsea And now Fluminense land a punch in this second half! A couple of sharp passes in the middle of the pitch — after a potential foul – and Everaldo, fresh off the bench, was set free. He did have a Chelsea defender for company and his run took him too wide of goal. Ultimately, he went for a hopeful effort but Sanchez was easily down to keep it out, although he did initially spill it. 53' Fluminense 0-1 Chelsea Another shot from distance from Chelsea, but this one from Cucurella was better than Caicedo's. The Spaniard looked a little surprised to have so much space to move into and his eyes lit up. The strike was a decent one but always looked to be heading wide of Fabio's bottom corner. The Fluminense goalkeeper put in a full-length dive but didn't need to bother as the effort went half a yard wide. Getty Images 51' Fluminense 0-1 Chelsea Chelsea's high press is continuing to bother Fluminense here. Malo Gusto pushed up to force the latest turnover and with Chelsea's forwards still high up, the Fluminense defenders dropped too deep in panic, giving the other players time to get forward and support the attack. 49' Fluminense 0-1 Chelsea It hasn't taken long to have our first shot of the second half. Good work from Palmer, who has been pretty quiet by his standards so far, and he laid the ball into Caicedo 25 yards from goal. The Ecuadorian stepped into a pocket of space and unleashed a right-footed effort that was never troubling Fabio. The Fluminense goalkeeper watched it fly a long way over the crossbar. 47' Fluminense 0-1 Chelsea Just watching the Chelsea goal again, it was such good work by Joao Pedro to win the ball in the first place and release Pedro Neto down the left-hand side. Ball recoveries aren't something he was particularly renowned for at Brighton, but Enzo Maresca will be delighted if that is the sign of things to come. Getty Images 46' Fluminense 0-1 Chelsea The players are back out on the pitch having hopefully had chance to take on suitable refreshment. Chelsea are 45 minutes away from the Club World Cup final while their opponents need to find a goal to have any chance of extending their stay in the United States. Who wins it from here? Let's find out.

Angel Reese Under Fire For Actions Toward Chicago Sky Staffer
Angel Reese Under Fire For Actions Toward Chicago Sky Staffer originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky faced the Washington Mystics in a rare before-noon contest on Tuesday, and Angel Reese did her part once again, recording her sixth straight double-double with 22 points, 15 rebounds and four assists. Advertisement However, the Sky dropped their 13th game of the season after falling 81-79. But the main takeaway came from a foul called on Chicago guard Ariel Atkins with 29.9 seconds remaining. The score was tied at 77 when Atkins and Washington forward Shakira Austin went up for a rebound. Austin came down with it, and the whistle favored the Mystics. The play was reviewed and upheld, but during the process, Reese stormed to the bench, visibly frustrated with the call. Ann Crosby, the team's vice president of basketball operations and strength and conditioning, extended a clipboard toward her. Reese then slapped it away, causing it to hit the ground. Advertisement The video of her hitting the board made its way to social media, and fans quickly criticized her for it. "Body language is awful yikes," one fan said. "that is an awful way to treat a trainer or coach," another wrote. "Wow, trash!" Added another. "Such a bad representation and not at all what should be shown body language is horrible," one fan said. "Locker room cancer, she might hurt someone," wrote another. "She slapped the clipboard out of the coaches hand???" A fan added. That bucket gave the Mystics a 79-77 lead. After a pair of free throws by Reese tied it, Austin sealed the win by knocking down two of her own with three seconds left. Advertisement Reese and the Sky have a quick turnaround and will return home to face the Dallas Wings on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Rangers, Astros join pro sports teams in pledging relief efforts after deadly central Texas floods
Texas' two Major League Baseball teams are joining in to help recovery efforts after devastating flooding in the central part of the state. The Texas Rangers and Houston Astros each pledged $1 million toward relief efforts Monday. They are just the latest professional teams to make a donation. The Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and the NFL Foundation combined to donate $1.5 million, and the state's three NBA teams, along with the NBA Players Association, combined to donate more than $2 million. A massive storm swept through Kerr County, which sits northwest of San Antonio, and the surrounding areas Friday. As of Tuesday afternoon, according to The New York Times, the death toll had risen to at least 111 people. At least 161 remain missing in the county, and officials said nobody was found alive since Friday. Advertisement Fast-moving waters rose more than 20 feet in fewer than two hours along the Guadalupe River on Friday morning, which led to millions of people being placed under flood watches over the weekend. A Christian summer camp for girls was especially impacted. At least 27 campers and staff members were killed in the flooding, and several are still missing.
